Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday warned that those attempting to provoke India will face retaliation in a language that they understand. His remarks came in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
While addressing the public during a rally in Lakhimpur Kheri, Yogi Adityanath condemned the Kashmir attack and paid his condolences to the bereaved families. “UP government pays condolences to the people who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack and condemns this cowardly attack. There cannot be any place for terrorism and anarchy in a civilised society,” he said.
“The Indian Government’s model of security, service, and good governance is based on the development, welfare of the poor, and security of all. Yeh naya Bharat kisi ko chhedta nahin lekin agar koi chhedega toh usko chhodega bhi nahin. (This new India does not provoke anyone, but if anyone dares to do it, they won’t be spared),” he said.
“If someone tries to lay a hand on the security of the nation, then they will be made to understand in the language that they understand. New India is ready to reply to such people,” the UP CM added.
On Saturday, authorities in Uttar Pradesh said that they are overseeing the departure of Pakistani nationals on short-term visas, while monitoring the ones with long-term visas. India has directed Pakistani citizens residing in the country to return to their homeland before April 27 in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Days ago, Yogi Adityanath had also met the family members of Shubham Dwivedi, the Kanpur resident who was killed in the Pahalgam attack.

A day after Pakistan suspended the 1972 Simla Agreement, the country’s flag was seen missing on the historic table at the Himachal Pradesh Raj Bhavan on which the agreement was signed.
The glossy wooden table on which the agreement was signed is kept in the Kirti Hall of the Himachal Pradesh Raj Bhavan on an elevated red-coloured platform cordoned off with brass railings with a plate which reads — “Simla Agreement was signed here on 3-7-1972”.
A photograph of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto signing the agreement and former PM Indira Gandhi sitting beside him is kept on the table, while several other photographs of the India-Pakistan Summit of 1972 hang on the wall in the background.
The Pakistani flag is not present on the iconic table anymore, reported PTI, citing Raj Bhavan officials. However, it is yet to be known if the Pakistani flag was removed or not.
Simla Agreement
The Simla Agreement was signed in 1972 between then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan President Bhutto on the intervening night of July 2 and 3, following Pakistan’s humiliating defeat in the 1971 war.
The pact was signed at a time when India was in full command, and had agreed to release 90,000 prisoners of war and returning 13,000 square km of land captured by India during the 1971 war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday announced compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a government job to the family of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who was among the 26 tourists killed in Jammu-Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22 in the deadly terrorist attack.
According to an official statement, the job will be given to any of the family members as per the wish of Narwal’s parents.
The last rites of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who was a resident of Haryana’s Karnal, were performed on April 23. Haryana CM Nayab Saini also attended his last rites.
Speaking to the media, CM Saini said, “I came here to pay tribute to Vinay Narwal and meet his family. Those who have carried out the cowardly attack will not be spared… strict action will be taken against them. Vinay Narwal is a brave soldier…The Haryana government stands with Vinay Narwal’s family.”
Several people arrived at the residence of the officer to pay tribute and take a final glimpse of the officer.
Lieutenant Vinay Narwal was killed less than 10 days after he got married.
His widow bid an emotional goodbye to her husband as she stood with tears in her eyes at the funeral ceremony.
“I hope his soul rests in peace. He lived a good life. He made us really proud, and we should keep this pride in every way,” she said, with a trembling voice.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his threat to India, asserting that “no one can deter India from taking decisive revenge” for the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
He affirmed that India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, “will hunt down terror and destroy terror infrastructure wherever it exists in the world”.
Sarma took to X and shared a clip of Zardari addressing a gathering in Sukkur.
‘Unworthy son’
“The State of Pakistan has a long and bloody history of betrayal — it took lives of Bilawal Bhutto’s grandfather and mother. It is a tragedy that an unworthy son today chooses to speak in a manner that dishonors even their sacrifice,” he wrote.
“Let it be absolutely clear — no one can deter India from taking decisive revenge when it comes to safeguarding its honour and its people,” Sarma added.
He said that India’s national security is non-negotiable. “The waters of the Indus are ours — and they shall remain ours, unchallenged and eternal,” the Assam CM added.
Pakistan People’s Party chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari claimed Indus belongs to Pakistan.
He said that under the Indus Waters Treaty, “India has acknowledged that the Indus belongs to Pakistan”.
Speaking at an event, Zardari said, “I would like to stand here in Sukkur by the Indus and tell India that the Indus is ours and the Indus will remain ours, whether water flows in this Indus or their blood.”
On April 22, terrorists gunned down 26 people, mostly tourists, in Baisaran, near J&K’s Pahalgam. The attack has led to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, with New Delhi announcing massive punitive actions against Islamabad.
With his wedding attire ready and all set to tie the knot in Pakistan’s Amarkot city on April 30, Singh along with his family and ‘baraat’ set out from Barmer district for the Attari border on Tuesday.
By the time they reached there, authorities refused to let them cross the border.
Rajasthan’s Shaitan Singh got engaged to Kesar Kanwar from Pakistan’s Sindh province four years ago. As the groom’s family struggled for years to get visas, the cross-border wedding was hit by another hurdle when the government closed the Attari border on Thursday.
With his wedding attire ready and all set to tie the knot in Pakistan’s Amarkot city on April 30, Singh along with his family and ‘baraat’ set out from Barmer district for the Attari border on Tuesday.
But by the time they reached there, authorities refused to let them cross the border as India on Wednesday ordered immediate shutdown of the Attari-Wagah border as part of a series of retaliatory steps following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack.
“We’ve waited a long time for this day,” said Singh, adding that after years of efforts it was only recently, February 18, that he, his father and brother were granted visas.
The groom’s cousin Surendra Singh said the situation has left both families disheartened.
“Our relatives from Pakistan had come here but they had to return. We are very disappointed. Terror attacks cause a lot of damage. Relations get spoiled. Movement on the border stops,” he said.
As the cross-border wedding remains disrupted. The visa of Singh, a resident of Indroi village in Barmer district, is valid until May 12, giving the families a glimmer of hope that the wedding might still happen if the border reopens in time.
“Whatever the terrorists did was wrong. The wedding has been interrupted. What to do? It is a matter of borders,” the groom said.
The cross-border marriage was arranged through family ties, a common practice among the Sodha Rajput community, which has a significant population in Sindh province of Pakistan.
Many of them prefer marrying within the community, and often seek matches across the border to preserve their cultural traditions.
Singh, who works in the finance sector, is one of many in the region with relatives in Pakistan. For now, his family waits in hope that the situation improves and the border reopens in time for the marriage to go ahead.
India on Wednesday downgraded diplomatic relations with Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were gunned down.
This ignition test conducted on April 24 is the second milestone after the successful first hot test on March 28, 2025, that was a major breakthrough in the testing of the Semicryogenic engine test programme, the space agency said.
A short duration hot test of the semicryogenic engine was successfully conducted at the test facility in ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu, the space agency said on Saturday.
This ignition test conducted on April 24 is the second milestone after the successful first hot test on March 28, 2025, that was a major breakthrough in the testing of the Semicryogenic engine test programme, the space agency said.
In a statement, ISRO said, this test, the Engine Power Head Test Article, encompassing all engine systems except the thrust chamber, was subjected to a hot test for a duration of 3.5 seconds, that validated the engine start-up sequence.
“During the test, the engine was successfully ignited and operated up to 60 per cent of its rated power level, demonstrating stable and controlled performance,” it said.
According to ISRO, these tests are part of a planned series of evaluations designed to validate the design integrity and performance of critical subsystems, including the low-pressure and high-pressure turbo pumps, pre-burner and associated control systems.

Over 1,000 Pakistani nationals residing in Maharashtra have been directed to leave the state, the state government confirmed on Wednesday.
In a similar move, authorities in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and Uttarakhand have also issued exit notices to Pakistani nationals on short-term visas. This action follows increased scrutiny of foreign nationals after the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam earlier this week.
Officials in these states have also indicated that those on long-term visas are under observation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted the chief ministers of all states on Friday and instructed them to ensure that no Pakistani stays in India beyond the stipulated deadline.
In Punjab, 75 Pakistani nationals have returned to their country, while 335 Indian nationals have come back from Pakistan.
Maharashtra minister Yogesh Kadam stated on Saturday that 5,000 Pakistani nationals are living in the state, including 1,000 on short-term visas who have been asked to leave the country as per the Centre’s directives.
Some have been residing in India for 8-10 years, some are married, and some have surrendered their Pakistani passports and applied for Indian citizenship, he said.
According to his estimate, there could be 4,000 long-term visas, including 1,000 SAARC visas, for those who have come to the state for film work, medical reasons, journalism, or personal matters, Kadam said.
Those with short-term visas have been asked to leave by April 27, while those with medical visas have been given two additional days, Kadam said.
In Maharashtra, 55 Pakistani nationals on short-term visas have been asked to leave by the Central government’s deadline of April 27, a state home department official said. There are 18 Pakistani nationals on short-term visas in Nagpur, 19 in Thane, 12 in Jalgaon, and three in Pune, while Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, and Raigad have one each.

Prayagraj Police Commissioner Tarun Gauba said four Pakistani nationals were on short-term visas in Prayagraj district.
While one Pakistani woman left on Friday, three Pakistani women will leave on Saturday, he said.
Gauba mentioned that these individuals had come for brief periods, including one for medical treatment, and assured that the local intelligence unit is closely monitoring the situation.
Similarly, authorities in Muzaffarnagar and Bulandshahr also reported that Pakistani nationals are leaving.
However, there are still 26 Pakistani nationals in Muzaffarnagar on long-term visas.
Azamgarh, Baghpat, Bhadohi, and Shahjahanpur districts also have Pakistani citizens with long-term visas who are currently exempted from leaving. Meanwhile, police in Amroha and Moradabad said no Pakistani nationals are residing in their districts.
Meerut and Mainpuri authorities said no Pakistani nationals are living in their districts on short-term visas.
Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand Police on Friday said two of the three Pakistani citizens living in different districts on short-term visas have been sent back.
According to a press release, the process of sending back the third one is underway.
Twenty-six people, most of them tourists, were killed in the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday.
Following this, the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to allow normal Pakistan visa holders to return to Pakistan by April 27 and medical visa holders by April 29.
State police said about 250 Pakistani citizens are living in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Nainital districts, out of which 247 are on long-term visas and three are on short-term visas.
Most of the Pakistani citizens who came to India on long-term visas are Hindus, according to the release.
Goa
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said three Pakistani nationals on short-term visas in the state have been asked to leave by the central government’s deadline.

House of another Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist razed in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the past 48 hours, security forces, in coordination with district administrations, have escalated their actions against terrorism by demolishing the homes of several terrorists across Jammu and Kashmir. The actions came in the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam which killed 26 people, mostly tourists, and injured many others.
The latest operation saw the house of Adnan Shafi, an active Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, being blown up in the Zainapora area of Shopian district. Hours ago, the house of Farooq Ahmed, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist currently based out of Pakistan, was bombed in Kupwara. Along with Farooq’s house, properties linked to other terrorists were also targeted.
Among them were the houses of Adil Ahmad Thokar from Thokerpoora in Anantnag district, Ahsan ul Haq Sheikh from Murran in Pulwama, Asif Ahmad Sheikh from Tral, Shahid Ahmad Kuttay from Chotipora in Shopian and Zahid Ahmad Ganie from Matalhama in Kulgam.
On Friday, security forces demolished the houses of two terrorists believed to be involved in the Pahalgam attack. While the residence of Lashkar terrorist Adil Hussain Thoker in Bijbehara was blown up using IEDs, the house of Asif Sheikh in Tral was demolished with a bulldozer.
According to officials, Adil Thoker is suspected of facilitating the Pakistani terrorists in executing the deadly assault in Baisaran Valley earlier this week. Thoker crossed into Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab in 2018, where he underwent training at terror camps. He later infiltrated back into Jammu and Kashmir sometime last year.
After the video elicited a barrage of comments, lauding the husband for a swift intervention, Rapido issued a statement saying its driver’s conduct was unacceptable and he had been permanently removed from the platform.

A woman here has accused a Rapido bike rider of sending an unsolicited message, asking for her flat number.
He also wrote, “Call me, else I’ll come over,” she alleged in a post on social media.
The woman informed her husband about the message, who caught the Rapido driver outside their apartment building. He also made a video of the driver and uploaded it on social media. The driver was handed over to the apartment’s security personnel.
Police, however, said no complaint has been received in connection with the matter.
After the video elicited a barrage of comments, lauding the husband for a swift intervention, Rapido issued a statement saying its driver’s conduct was unacceptable and he had been permanently removed from the platform.
“We barred the captain from the platform, and we spoke to the customer and offered legal assistance, and are on standby for further instructions from her,” Rapido said.
The company asserted that it had its zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and it would tighten its driver verification protocols.
The accused was identified as Manjar Alam, who was using someone else’s identity to operate the ride hailing app.
According to the video, the woman had scheduled a Rapido bike ride through the app to step out for an errand. Shortly after, the driver arrived and called to notify her of his presence and she asked him to wait a couple of minutes.
A minute later, the driver texted her, asking for her flat number and suggesting he should come up. He also shared his personal number, insisting she call him. ‘ Feeling unsafe, the woman locked her door and immediately contacted her husband. Her husband returned home and confronted the driver outside their apartment.
Upon being confronted, the driver fell to his knees and pleaded for forgiveness. The woman’s husband documented the exchange and later shared the footage online.
In the video, the driver claimed it was a misunderstanding and that his message had been misread.
When questioned, the driver introduced himself as Manjar Alam from Ghata village.
In the case at AIIMS Raipur, two male End Stage Renal Disease patients, aged 39 and 41 from Bilaspur, had been on dialysis for three years, the union health ministry said.

New Delhi: The AIIMS Raipur has successfully performed its first swap kidney transplant, making it the first among the newer AIIMS institutions and the first government hospital in Chhattisgarh to carry out this complex and life-saving procedure.
The Union Health ministry said swap kidney transplant, which is also known as Kidney Paired Transplant (KPT), can lead to a 15 per cent increase in the number of transplants.
In a swap transplant, a patient with renal failure who has a willing living donor but is unable to receive the kidney due to an incompatible blood group or the presence of HLA antibodies can still undergo a transplant by exchanging donors with another incompatible pair. Through this arrangement, both recipients receive compatible kidneys, resulting in successful transplants for both pairs.
In the case at AIIMS Raipur, two male End Stage Renal Disease patients, aged 39 and 41 from Bilaspur, had been on dialysis for three years, the ministry said in a statement.
Both were advised to undergo kidney transplantation.Their respective wives came forward as living donors. However, due to blood group incompatibility direct donation was not possible.
To overcome this challenge, the transplant team at AIIMS Raipur coordinated a successful swap transplant, the statement said.
Each donor gave her kidney to the other recipient, ensuring blood group compatibility and enabling both patients to receive life-saving organs. The surgery was conducted on March 15, and all four individuals — both donors and recipients — are currently recovering well under close observation in the Transplant ICU.
Recognising its potential, the National Organisation and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has recommended for the implementation of Swap donor transplantation to all states and Union Territories as this option could increase the number of donors.
The NOTTO has also decided to have a ‘uniform one nation one swap transplant programme’ to facilitate these transplants more effectively across the country, the statement said.
AIIMS Raipur has played a pivotal role in the development of organ transplant in Chhattisgarh. The institute has successfully developed a renal transplant program, encompassing both living and deceased donor transplants.
Six deceased donors have donated their organs in last two years, the statement said.
AIIMS Raipur has also been first amongst the newer AIIMS to start deceased donor organ donation and deceased donor kidney transplantation, it said.
The Pahalgam attack was carried out by a hardened module affiliated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group, comprising mostly foreign terrorists, with support from local militants.
J&K Attack: The Pahalgam terrorist attack resulted in the deaths of 26 people.
The terrorist attack in Baisaran valley near Pahalgam, which ended in 26 people dying, has brought a long-active terror group operating in Jammu and Kashmir to the forefront. This terror attack, one of the deadliest since the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019, has triggered high-level diplomatic and security responses from the government against Pakistan, which has been accused of harbouring the handlers and backers of this terrorist group.
The attack was carried out by a group affiliated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror organisation, comprising mostly foreign terrorists, with support from local militants, overground workers from the Valley and under the control of 26/11 attacks mastermind and Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed.
The Module’s Past Operations
According to sources, this particular module has been active in the Kashmir Valley for a long time. Security agencies believe it has been behind several high-profile attacks across the region, including in Sonamarg, Boota Pathri, and Ganderbal. In October 2024, four individuals, including two Indian Army personnel, were killed in a terror strike at Boota Pathri. That same month, Sonamarg witnessed a deadly assault on tunnel construction workers in which six labourers and a doctor were gunned down. Hashim Musa, one of the main accused in the Pahalgam massacre, is believed to a suspect in this attack.
Following the Sonamarg massacre, a key figure in the module, Junaid Ahmed Bhatt, an A+ category Lashkar terrorist from Kulgam, was neutralised in an encounter in Dachigam in December 2024. Other members of the group managed to escape, dispersing into nearby forested regions. After a major attack, these terrorists typically go underground, hiding in dense forest hideouts until receiving fresh orders from their handlers in Pakistan.
Links to Lashkar Leadership
The module is reportedly controlled directly by Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed and his deputy Saifullah, both believed to be operating from Pakistan. Indian intelligence agencies maintain that the module receives not only ideological but also logistical and tactical guidance from Pakistan’s military and its intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
The group’s composition includes a majority of foreign fighters, but several locals and overground workers from Kashmir are embedded within it, providing support and cover.
The Pahalgam Attack
In the Pahalgam attack, terrorists struck at three separate locations within the Baisaran valley. According to police sources, five people were killed together at one location, two were shot dead in an open field, and others were targeted near a fencing structure around the valley. Those who managed to jump over the fencing and flee were spared. Survivors have said that the attackers even engaged them in brief conversations before opening fire.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday released sketches of three suspects linked to the Pahalgam attack. Two are Pakistani nationals: Hashim Musa alias Suleman and Ali Bhai alias Talha. The third, Abdul Hussain Thokar, is a resident of Anantnag in Kashmir. The police have announced a cash reward of Rs 20 lakh for credible information leading to their capture.
Security forces also uncovered a hideout used by the module in nearby forests on Thursday.
The DMK has frequently accused Governor RN Ravi of acting on behest of the BJP to deliberately delay implementation of laws and scuttle the state’s development.
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi (L) and Chief Minister MK Stalin (File photo).
Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK and Governor RN Ravi are at loggerheads, again.
This time it is over Mr Ravi alleging Chief Minister MK Stalin used the state police force to deter vice-chancellors from attending a conference chaired by him in the hill-town of Ooty.
Mr Ravi – whom the Supreme Court rebuked this month for withholding assent to 10 bills cleared, each twice over, by the Tamil Nadu government – declared Mr Stalin’s behaviour was reminiscent of the Emergency imposed by late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
“Is MK Stalin afraid of the consequences of a rise in standards of state universities… that this could be a threat to his political future?” the Governor, roiled in a row with the state government over appointment of vice-chancellors to state-run colleges and universities, asked.
The DMK hit back quickly and declared “intimidation is in the BJP’s DNA”.
The Tamil party has frequently accused Mr Ravi of acting on behest of the BJP – which appoints governors – to deliberately delay implementation of laws and scuttle the state’s development.
“We have it in us to stand for the state’s rights. There is no provision in the Constitution to make governors chancellors of state universities,” Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan said.
On existing vice-chancellors skipping the Governor’s conference, Mr Chezhiaan said they had “understood the Supreme Court verdict” and had chosen to boycott the event.
“How can the state government be responsible? The Governor convened the meet disrespecting the law… does that mean the vice-chancellors should do it too?”
The head-to-head between the Tamil Nadu government and Mr Ravi – at least on the issue of withholding assent for bills – came to a big denouement on April 8 after the Supreme Court said Mr Ravi had not acted in good faith, and that his actions were “illegal” and “arbitrary”.
The verdict was hailed as “historic” by Chief Minister Stalin, who said it was a win for all states, referring to similar disputes between non-BJP states and their respective governors.
In addition, the court also specified timelines for governors and the President to assent to bills passed by state legislatures; that section of the verdict led the BJP’s Nishikant Dubey to attack the judiciary.
Despite the attack, Mr Goyal expressed confidence that tourism in Kashmir will resume soon, emphasising that no one can derail Kashmir from its developmental path, highlighting the region’s progress and potential.
The Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 3 this year.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Friday assured a smooth Amarnath Yatra, which is set to commence on July 3 this year, despite the Pahalgam terror attack.
Despite the attack, Mr Goyal expressed confidence that tourism in Kashmir will resume soon, emphasising that no one can derail Kashmir from its developmental path, highlighting the region’s progress and potential.
“People of India are capable and confident enough that soon tourism will resume there, Amarnath Yatra will be conducted successfully, and no one can derail Kashmir from the developmental path that it has taken,” said Mr Goyal.
Registrations for this year’s Shri Amarnath Yatra began in Jammu and Kashmir on April 15. They took place at 533 branches of Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, J&K Bank, and Yes Bank across the country.
The Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 3 this year, simultaneously from both routes–the Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district. It will culminate on August 9 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
Mr Goyal reiterated that the government has already announced the cancellation of visas for Pakistani nationals, and they must leave India.
“We have already announced it (visa cancellation for Pakistani nationals) and they all must go…,” he said.
Mr Goyal strongly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack, emphasising that India will not tolerate terrorism. Mr Goyal stated that India has no interest in having trade relations with Pakistan, labelling it a “terrorist nation.”
“India has no interest in having a trade relation with a terrorist nation like Pakistan… There will be no place in India where we will let terrorism rise…,” added the Union Minister.
Referring to Pakistan’s persistent challenge, Mr Goyal made it clear that India has already taken steps to sever ties.
“The loss caused to Pakistan is of no interest to India. What is the use of trading with a terrorist country like Pakistan?” he said. He further assured that India’s decisions, particularly regarding the visa cancellations, would be communicated soon, underscoring that these steps are part of a broader strategy to tackle terrorism.
“As long as 140 crore Indians consider patriotism and nationalism their highest duty, such incidents will continue to trouble the nation,” he added.
Meanwhile on Friday, while extending condolences to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said Central government will identify, trace and punish the terrorists along with their backers.
Recalling the remarks of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Goyal said, “I remember Atal Bihari Vajpayee said, cross-border and state-sponsored terrorism is a menace to civilised society. This is the moment when the entire country comes together and expresses the anger and collective commitment of the nation to give a fitting response to those responsible for this.”
Reminding people of the resolve taken by Prime Minister Narendra over the terror attacks, Mr Goyal said, “We will identify, trace and punish the terrorists and their backers. This is the resolve of every Indian… We faced the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and came back stronger. We gave a befitting reply to Pulwama attacks.”
Union Minister also expressed condolences to all the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
“There is outrage across the country from Kargil to Kaniyakumari against the attack on India’s very fabric. We are all united in grief, pray for the departed and wish for quick recovery of those injured. We pray that strength is bestowed upon those families who are deeply impacted by this heinous and criminal act of terrorists,” Mr Goyal said.
The attack in Pahalgam occurred on Tuesday at Baisaran meadow, where terrorists targeted tourists, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, and leaving several others injured. It was one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF jawans.
Following the attack, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi reached Srinagar on Friday and assessed the situation in the valley.

The tourists stranded in Chungthang were rescued via Sankalang Bridge in Dzongu, officials said.
Chungthang is nearly 100 km away from Gangtok.
Hundreds of tourists stranded in Chungthang in Mangan district of north Sikkim following landslides were rescued on Friday, officials said.
Chungthang is nearly 100 km away from the state capital Gangtok. The landslides were caused by heavy rainfall in Lachen and Lachung areas of Mangan on Thursday.
The tourists stranded in Chungthang were rescued via Sankalang Bridge in Dzongu, officials said. A total of 222 vehicles left the region through a reconstructed Bailey bridge at Sangkalang, which was opened for traffic movement, the officials said.
While roads to Lachen and Lachung remained closed due to mudslides caused by heavy rainfall last evening, efforts were on to clear the routes as fast as possible.
Around 100 tourists from the Lachung area hiked downhill, crossing the landslide-hit Bop village, to reach Chungthang. Mangan District Magistrate Anant Jain said the remaining tourists stranded in Lachen and Lachung have been advised to remain in their respective hotels. Adequate accommodation and food arrangements have been made to ensure their well-being, he said.
Mr Jain and Superintendent of Police (SP) Sonam Detchu Bhutia helped the stranded tourists so that they could return to their destinations safely.
District officials visited Bop village to assess the situation. They are expected to visit Leema on Saturday, once the Bop road is cleared. The road conditions at Munshithang will also be reviewed during tomorrow, the officials said.
Several agencies have been directed to mobilise their machinery to clear the roads. Local construction companies have also been asked to coordinate and utilise their available machinery to expedite the clearance work to resume vehicular movement.
Besides, the power department has been directed to prioritise and expedite the restoration of supply in Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung.

In a heartfelt video, he revealed that the wife of the Navy officer martyred in the Pahalgam terror attack was his classmate from Hansraj College. Expressing his shock and sorrow, Elvish said they had studied together and that it was heartbreaking to see someone he once knew now facing such an unimaginable loss.
The terror attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of several soldiers, leaving the country in grief. Elvish’s revelation adds a powerful, emotional layer to the story, reminding people that behind every uniform is a family and a life that gets forever altered. His message resonated deeply across social media, as he spoke not just as a celebrity, but as a friend and a citizen who felt the weight of the tragedy personally.

In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, forest officials in Odisha’s Malkangiri district seized 473 rare turtles during an anti-smuggling operation in the Motu area early Friday morning.
Acting on a tip-off from reliable sources, a special forest department team set up a trap near the Motu checkpoint. Around 3 a.m., they intercepted a suspicious vehicle and discovered the turtles hidden in 13 sacks. The turtles were reportedly being smuggled from Andhra Pradesh into Odisha.
Although the occupants of the vehicle managed to flee, forest officials successfully seized the live turtles along with the vehicle used for their illegal transport. Both have been secured at the MV-79 forest office.
An investigation is currently underway to trace those behind the smuggling attempt. Authorities suspect the involvement of an inter-state trafficking network.

The Ganderbal Police arrested a local horse handler, Ayaz Ahmad, following allegations by a tourist group from Uttar Pradesh. The complaint was filed by Ekta Tiwari of Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur, who accused Ahmad and others of questioning their religion and discussing weapons over phone calls.
Ekta Tiwari, part of a 20-member tourist group visiting Jammu & Kashmir, claimed that on April 20, while heading to Pahalgam, they encountered suspicious individuals near Baisaran. According to her, two men approached them during a horse ride, inquiring about their religion and the size of their group.
“They asked if we were Hindu or Muslim, told us to read the Quran, and questioned why my brother was wearing a rudraksh (Hindu prayer beads),” Tiwari said. A verbal altercation ensued, prompting the group to retreat and seek help from other handlers.
Tiwari further alleged that shortly after the confrontation, one of the men received a phone call and spoke in coded language, mentioning, “Plan-A has failed.” She claimed they also discussed sending “35 guns into the valley.”
In response to the Pahalgam terror attack by Pak-based terrorists, India has suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and halted the flow of Indus River water to Pakistan.
Indus Water Treaty has been suspended.
India will ensure that no water from the Indus River is wasted or allowed to flow into Pakistan, the government said on Friday. It announced plans on three fronts — short-term, mid-term, and long-term — to prevent the river’s water from reaching Pakistan. The move came after India decided to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam carried out by Pakistan-based terrorists.
Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil said arrangements will be made to ensure not a single drop of water is wasted. According to sources, the capacity of dams along the Indus basin rivers will be increased to store more water.
Earlier, the government issued a formal notification implementing its decision to suspend the treaty and served it to Pakistan on Thursday, a day after New Delhi announced the move.
The notification stated that the Indus Waters Treaty is being held in “abeyance”, effectively suspending all treaty obligations, including meetings between Indus Commissioners, data sharing, and advance notice of new projects.
With the treaty now suspended, India is free to construct dams on the river without needing approval or consultation with Pakistan.
In a letter addressed to the Pakistani officials, India’s Water Resources Secretary Debashree Mukherjee said that sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting Jammu and Kashmir impedes India’s rights under the Indus Waters Treaty.
“The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” the letter read.
Meanwhile, Pakistan on Thursday rejected India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and said any measures to stop the flow of water belonging to Pakistan under the pact will be seen as an “act of war”. The countries signed the treaty in September 1960 after nine years of negotiations with the sole aim to manage issues relating to cross-border rivers.
The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty was part of a series of punitive measures against Pakistan, which also included the cancellation of visas for Pakistani nationals, expulsion of Pakistani military attachs, immediate closure of the Attari land transit post and Obroi post, and the downsizing of diplomatic missions.

Two men were booked for allegedly impersonating pony service providers using fake documents on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi route in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, officials said.
During routine patrolling near Shri Geeta Mata Mandir, police team intercepted a man identifying as one Puran Singh. On verifying, police found his name to be Manir Hussain.
He was using someone else’s authorised service card to operate illegally, police said, adding that an FIR under relevant sections of law has been registered at Katra Police Station.
In a similar case near Ban Ganga bridge, police caught Sahil Khan, who was from Kotli in Jammu district, for allegedly operating a pony service without any valid license.
He admitted that he had no authorisation and a case was registered, police said.
Authorities said surveillance and verification drives would continue to curb unauthorised activities on the shrine route. Police have urged all service providers to carry valid documents and requested the public to report suspicious behaviour.

In the wake of the deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed at least 26 tourists, the Indian government has taken a series of diplomatic and policy actions against Pakistan — raising questions about the status of Pakistani nationals currently residing in India, including Seema Haider, a woman who made headlines for illegally entering the country to meet her Indian boyfriend.
India’s response to Pahalgam
India has closed its Attari border, expelled Pakistani diplomats, and suspended the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty — a key agreement that had governed water-sharing between the two nations since 1960. Additionally, Delhi has revoked a visa exemption scheme previously available to Pakistani nationals. Those in India under this scheme have been ordered to leave the country within 48 hours.
These policy changes raised the question about Seema Haider, who went viral for her cross-border love story with a young Indian boyfriend Sachin Meena.
• Indus Water Treaty to be held in abeyance
• All defence staff at the embassy to be recalled
• Attari-Wagah border closed
• No SAARC visas for Pakistani nationals; existing visas cancelled

India’s top leadership, including PM Narendra Modi, has vowed a befitting reply over the Pahalgam massacre. Pakistan’s role is undeniable, and India has both diplomatic and kinetic options on the table, like after the Uri and Pulwama attacks. This is why Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, might be risking a limited war with India.

Nothing unites a country like war does. With its economy in the doldrums, armed rebels running riot in two of its four provinces and the popularity of its army at a new low, Pakistan might be itching for a military confrontation. Since the 1971 split, this is the closest Pakistan has come to breaking up. A mini-war could fix multiple problems, and the Pahalgam attack could be intended for that.
That India will respond with might to the Pahalgam massacre has been made clear by the country’s top leadership. The questions are how and when. There is also another important question — Why has Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir risked a military confrontation with India? That despite witnessing India’s resolve after the Uri and Pulwama terror strikes.
India has been at the receiving of Pakistan’s terror export ever since its formation in 1947. However, the Pahalgam attack was unlike anything that Pakistan-backed terrorists have carried out in India.
Twenty-six people were massacred in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22. The Resistance Front, indeed a front for the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack on holidayers. A top LeT commander, Saifullah Kasuri, is reportedly the mastermind.
It is the targeting of tourists, the toll and the singling out of non-Muslims that make the Pahalgam attack unlike any other in recent years.
The attack seemed well-planned and timed even as tourism received a major boost, with the overall security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir improving in recent years.
Though Islamabad is denying its link to the massacre, it is a given that no terror attack of this scale in Jammu and Kashmir would have been carried out without the support of Pakistan’s military establishment. Experts aren’t debating that.
“This has been unleashed by the Pakistan army. SSG commandos of Pakistan are posing as terrorists and carrying out these attacks,” SP Vaid, former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir, said.
The cross-border involvement was underscored at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Wednesday.
The communal line in the attack also comes after the recent dog-whistling by General Asim Munir.
“Our forefathers believed that we were different from Hindus in every possible aspect of life. Our religion is different. Our customs are different… That was the foundation of the Two-Nation Theory,” said General Munir on April 16.
This was perceived as a signal to the Pakistani terror assets, according to reports, and the Pahalgam attack came within a week of that speech.
While Pakistani military chiefs have historically made anti-India remarks, it isn’t usual for them to make anti-Hindu remarks.
“It’s not a coincidence that Asim Munir utters illogical words two days back, and such an attack takes place where the religion of the victims is asked, and they are asked to recite the Kalima,” Vaid said.
Munir’s anti-Hindu remarks and the singling out of non-Muslim tourists by terrorists was meant to provoke a massive outrage in India and New Delhi to react.
INDIA HAS MADE ITS INTENTIONS CLEAR ON TERROR
Though Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif said his country had nothing to do with the Pahalgam terror attack, India isn’t buying that.
India signalled its intent with a diplomatic offensive, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, cancellation of visas for Pakistanis and reducing the strength of the Pakistani High Commission, on Wednesday in the CCS.
However, there might be expectations beyond the diplomatic offensive.
“Must say, I don’t see the measures announced by the Indian government today being able to greatly placate the anger of the Indian citizenry,” strategic expert Faran Jefferey said after the CCS decisions were made public.
With the cross-border surgical strikes after the 2016 Uri attack and an aerial bombing after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, India has set examples of retaliatory military responses.
In his first public statement since the Pahalgam attack, PM Modi on Thursday said, “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth.”
PM Modi was speaking at a rally in Bihar in Hindi and made a rare switch to English to ensure that the world doesn’t miss a word of his fierce message.
There is chatter online that, fearing retaliation, Pakistan has moved its fighter jets closer to bases in the northern region that are closer to the Indian border.
It is well-believed that there cannot be an all-out war between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed countries. The fallout will be scary, and the world desperately has to intervene to prevent that. The two countries have fought three wars over Kashmir — in 1947, 1965, and 1999 –, all initiated by Islamabad, or more precisely, Rawalpindi, the headquarters of the Pakistan army.
A limited war is, however, a possibility, and General Munir knows that.
ASIM MUNIR’S RISING UNPOPULARITY IN PAKISTAN
Pakistan’s military establishment is under unprecedented pressure and Army Chief Asim Munir is facing rising unpopularity.
“Pakistan Army chief wants to escalate it, he wants to prove his credibility,” said Vaid, the former Jammu and Kashmir DGP.
Munir and his men are marked in all of Pakistan’s four provinces.
While Baloch rebels are running over them in Balochistan, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan are attacking at will in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. In Sindh, a canal project has brought the people on the streets, and in Punjab, people are furious over the jailing of former PM Imran Khan.
“General Munir can’t even take a train through parts of Pakistan without getting hit and bombed. That is why he has decided to play the Kashmir card,” explained defence expert Colonel Rohit Dev (Retd) on India Today TV.
Since 1971, this is the closest Pakistan has come to breaking apart.
The military has been the most-respected organisation in Pakistan and people have rallied behind it. Recent protests and attacks on people in uniform reveal the extent of fury against them now.
Though the military is all-powerful in Pakistan and runs the country, General Munir cannot ignore popular sentiment for too long.
And what is better than a strike from India to bind Pakistanis together and get them behind their military?
Much like in 2007, when Pakistan’s military dictator Pervez Musharraf faced growing resistance and survived assassination attempts, the Pakistan Army today finds itself battling domestic unrest and an erosion of public trust.
“The Pakistani military, for the first time in the country’s history, does not have the unanimous or even majority support of the Pakistani people in a face-off with India. How the mighty have fallen,” UK-based investigative journalist of Pakistani-origin Adil Raja wrote on X.
WHY ASIM MUNIR WANTS INDIA TO STRIKE BACK
Any counterattack, including a limited war, by India will hit Pakistan’s already-shattered economy.
The fear of India hitting back sent jitters down Pakistan’s stock market on Thursday. The benchmark KSE-100 was down by over 1,000 points.
Pakistan has been going around the globe with a begging bowl. It secured $7-billion in extended loans from the IMF last September.
However, the military has kept its budget intact, and the economy might not be a priority in Asim Munir’s immediate plans to prove credibility and unite the people behind him. Munir’s speech last week, in which he unleashed anti-Hindu rhetoric and raked up the Kashmir issue, came across more as an attempt to assert the establishment’s position both domestically and among the diaspora.
That his reading of the situation isn’t totally incorrect was revealed by former Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain.
“Pakistan is politically divided, but we stand united as a nation. If attacked or threatened by India, all groups — PML-N, PPP, PTI, JUI, and others — will rally together under the Pakistani flag to defend our homeland,” Hussain, a member of Imran Khan’s party, said on Wednesday.
“India cannot twiddle its thumbs. Once the escalatory ladder is revved up, it can go out of hand,” a security analyst told The Guardian on condition of anonymity.
India has almost the same number of nuclear warheads as Pakistan but is much superior when it comes to conventional war capabilities.
Strategic expert Michael Kugelman said that both diplomatic and kinetic responses against Pakistan were on the table.
“Initial public reactions from the Trump administration suggest it may not oppose an Indian retaliation,” said Kugelman.
Not just the US, the whole world is backing India in the aftermath of the dastardly attack in Pahalgam.

Three female bodies, identified as members of the CPI (Maoist) guerrilla squad, were recovered following an encounter at the tri-junction of the Chhattisgarh-Telangana-Maharashtra border on Thursday. Sources suggest the death toll may rise as joint security forces continue to surround the so-called “safe zone” of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit. Intermittent gunfire was reported, according to local sources.
From Chhattisgarh, a joint team comprising DRG, COBRA, STF, CRPF, and Bastar Fighters is engaged in the operation. Meanwhile, Telangana’s Greyhound Forces and Maharashtra’s C60 Forces have encircled the hills of Karregatta, Nadpalli, and Pujari Kanker.
The operation was launched based on concrete intelligence regarding the presence of top Naxal commanders, including Hidma, Damodar, and Deva, along with their armed cadres. Reports indicated the presence of over 300 Naxalites in the area, prompting interstate action starting April 22.

Man Swings From Edge Of Crane In Austin (Image Source – Reddit)
A shocking video is going viral on social media, leaving the internet asking, “What?” The clip shows a man swinging from a construction crane in downtown Austin. Hanging from the edge of the crane at the top of a building, he swings freely, sparking reactions of disbelief across the web.
The video has been widely shared across various social media platforms. According to a Fox 7 Austin report, the Austin police responded to a welfare check call at the 400 block of Guadalupe Street, where a caller reported someone hanging from a crane. When officers arrived, they found a person apparently rappelling down from the crane’s edge at the top of the building. The area was evacuated as a precaution.
Soon after, the person climbed down the crane’s ladder and entered the high-rise building. At the time of the report, the individual’s identity was unknown, and no arrests had been made. The investigation is still ongoing.
The video was filmed by a man named Jack Zimmermann, and it quickly gained attention online, prompting various reactions. One user joked, “Brought to you by Red Bull. ‘Red Bull gives you swings.'” Another commented, “I wish these roof-topper types would show a ‘how they get down’ video, because I really want to know!” A crane operator expressed frustration, saying, “As a crane operator, this irritates me.” Meanwhile, another user explained, “It’s pretty simple. Just climb up the rope. They make climbing equipment called ascenders to make it easier. Anyone doing this is comfortable with rope work—it’s not hard, just requires strength and knowledge.”

A chilling new video has emerged showing the first moments of the Pahalgam terror attack when terrorists began shooting at tourists even as children played nearby.
A chilling video has surfaced showing the initial moments of the Pahalgam terror attack. The video shows a terrorist shooting dead a tourist under a tree, as other tourists take a few seconds to realise the terror unfolding. The video begins with a few children playing on a trampoline and tourists relaxing nearby, but within seconds of gunfire, panic sets in as people scramble for safety.
Nearly 28 people have died and over 60 others are said to be injured in the attacks that are now being called the Valley’s deadliest since 2019. The terrorists segregated the tourists based on gender, and confirmed if they were non-Muslims, before shooting most of the men dead.
Pallavi, the wife of a tourist from Karnataka’s Shivamogga, revealed: “I noticed that there were three to four attackers. After my husband was killed, I faced one of the terrorists and said, ‘Mere pati ko mara hai na, mujhe bhi maaro’. My son also confronted him and said, ‘Kutte, mere papa ko maara, humein bhi maar daalo’.”
The terrorist told her, “‘Nahin marenge. Tum Modi ko jaake bolo’.”
PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have vowed strict action against the perpetrators.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

This also comes as India announced that it will speed up the launch of its spy satellite EOS-09 in the wake of the terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley, that left 28 dead and over 60 injured. The dead also include two foreign nationals – one from Nepal and another from the United Arab Emirates. Videos going viral online show terrorists shooting down tourists execution-style, after identifying them as non-Muslims.
PM Narendra Modi has vowed tough action against the perpetrators of the attack – which is amongst the deadliest in the Valley in recent times.

India has taken a slew of counter measures in the wake of the attack, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty and shutting down the Attari-Wagah border, and cancelling all Pakistani visas from Sunday. Till now, it was only for Pakistanis on SAARC visas.
It also ordered all Pakistani nationals to leave India within 72 hours. Medical visas are valid till April 29.
India has also urged all Indians living in Pakistan to return home and has advised against any travel plans to Pakistan.
Pakistan, meanwhile, has washed its hands off the attack, blaming India instead. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said Pakistan has “nothing to do with it”, and instead blamed the unrest in Kashmir and Manipur for the attack.

India Gets Tough On Pakistan
India on Wednesday asked all Pakistani nationals to leave India within 48 hours after the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam killed 28 people, mostly tourists.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at a media briefing announced downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan including expulsion of its military attaches. He also spoke about the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting that took place on Wednesday evening.
The decision comes in the aftermath of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam terror attack which claimed the lives of at least 26 lives and left several others injured.

Indus Water Treaty: India on Thursday officially informed Pakistan that the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty is being held in abeyance “with immediate effect” citing the neighbouring country’s sustained cross-border terrorism targeting Jammu and Kashmir.
The decision comes in the aftermath of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam terror attack which claimed the lives of at least 26 lives and left several others injured.
Jal Shakti Ministry’s Secretary Debashree Mukherjee has sent a formal letter to her Pakistani counterpart, Syed Ali Murtaza, informing the Government of India’s decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty 1960 in abeyance, marking a major escalation in regional water diplomacy.
India said that sustained cross-border terrorism has impeded its rights under the Indus Waters Treaty.
“The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” the letter read.
The letter highlighted multiple shifts, including dramatic changes in population demographics and India’s push toward clean energy, which have altered the foundational assumptions of the agreement.
India further said that Pakistan has refused to respond to its request to enter into negotiations as envisaged under the treaty.
“The resulting security uncertainties have directly impeded India’s full utilisation of its rights under the Treaty. Furthermore, apart from other breaches committed by it, Pakistan has refused to respond to India’s request to enter into negotiations as envisaged under the Treaty and is thus in breach of the Treaty,” the letter read.
Concluding the letter, Mukherjee declared, “The Government of India has hereby decided that the Indus Waters Treaty 1960 will be held in abeyance with immediate effect.”
India has announced downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan and suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam carnage on Tuesday in which 26 tourists were shot dead in broad daylight by the Resistance Front terrorists, an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The decision was taken during the meeting of the Cabinet Committee of Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Pakistan’s Reaction To India’s Decision
Earlier today, Pakistan’s National Security Committee had said any attempt by India to block or divert river water under the Indus Waters Treaty would be treated as an “Act of War”. Terming the 1960 agreement a lifeline for its 240 million citizens, Islamabad claimed the treaty cannot be held in abeyance unilaterally and warned of retaliation “across the complete spectrum of National Power”.
Pakistan appeared to take into account that if India holds the IWT in abeyance it might not bode well for its citizens. Protests have erupted across Pakistan following its inadequate response to the droughts which have occurred across Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab provinces.
What Is Indus Waters Treaty?
India and Pakistan signed the Indus Waters Treaty in 1960, with the World Bank as an additional signatory. The pact sought to divide the water of the Indus river and its tributaries equitably between the two countries. Under the treaty, water from three eastern rivers—Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej—was allocated to India, and that from the three western rivers—Chenab, Indus, and Jhelum—to Pakistan.

President Droupadi Murmu will attend the state funeral of Pope Francis in Vatican City this week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.
President Murmu will pay a two-day visit to Vatican City beginning Friday.
“President Droupadi Murmu will be visiting Vatican City on April 25 to 26 to attend the state funeral of Pope Francis and offer condolences on behalf of the government and people of India,” the MEA said.
Francis, who was the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years, died on Easter Monday. He was 88.
“Pope Francis will be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world,” the MEA said.
President Murmu will pay homage to Pope Francis by laying a wreath at Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican City on Friday, it said.
“On April 26, the president will attend the funeral Mass of His Holiness Pope Francis at Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City, which will be attended by dignitaries from around the world,” the MEA said in a statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed condolences at the demise of Pope Francis and noted that his affection for the people of India will always be cherished.
Both airlines said they regretted the inconvenience caused and urged passengers to double-check flight timings and schedules before leaving for the airport.
IndiGo and Air India have warned passengers of service disruptions following Pakistan closing its airspace to Indian airlines. In messages on X the two said some international flight schedules may be impacted due to changing of flight paths leading to “an alternative extended route”.

Both airlines said they regretted the inconvenience caused and urged passengers to double-check flight timings and schedules before leaving for the airport.
Hours earlier Pakistan shut its airspace to all Indian-owned or -operated airlines.
That was after a slew of diplomatic measures by India, including suspension of visas and the Indus Waters Treaty, as the first set of retaliatory measures for the Pahalgam terror attack.
Due to the announced restriction of Pakistan airspace for all Indian airlines, it is expected that some Air India flights to or from North America, UK, Europe, and Middle East will take an alternative extended route. Air India regrets the inconvenience caused…
On suspension of the treaty – under which Pak receives an estimated 80 per cent of its riverine water supply – Islamabad said any attempt to “usurp” its rights would be seen as “an act of war”.
Twenty-six people, including civilians and tourists, were killed in the Tuesday afternoon attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The attack was the worst on civilians in the past several years.
And it was the worst terror strike in India since February 2019, when 40 CRPF, or Central Reserve Police Force, personnel were killed in J&K’s Pulwama district.
In a strong message Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi – who was in Saudi Arabia at the time but rushed back the next day – put the terrorists and their handlers on notice, warning them his administration will “identify and punish” all those who conspired against India.
The warning was fierce but it was the switch from Hindi to English – in Bihar’s Madhubhani – to deliver the message that raised eyebrows. The switch has been seen as India telling the world there will be consequences for an attack that has been condemned by the global community.
What also raised eyebrows was the Prime Minister’s plane side-stepping Pak airspace when it flew back from Riyadh early Wednesday. The re-routing was seen as a clear sign India’s security agencies were aware of the threat from Pakistan and altered the flight path for the PM’s safety.
Indian security agencies say they have evidence to prove Pak was behind the attack.
Earlier today Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed diplomats from the US, Europe, Qatar, Japan, Russia, and China – all of whom had condemned the attack – on that material.
Pak’s involvement was also flagged by Major General Yash Mor (retd.), a defence expert who told NDTV the attack needed military-level training and bore the hallmark of the ISI.

EV cab service BluSmart co-founder Puneet Jaggi has been detained from a hotel in Delhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case linked to Gensol Group, another company that he co-founded.
The ED also searched properties of Gensol in Delhi, Gurugram, and Ahmedabad, sources said. The action came in a case under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), they said.
Mr Jaggi had been staying in the Delhi hotel for the last one week, sources said.
Power Finance Corporation filed a complaint with the Delhi Police and the Economic Offences Wing some days ago, sources said, adding Mr Jaggi’s brother Anmol Jaggi is in Dubai and has not yet returned to India.
This ED investigation began on the basis of a report by the capital markets regulator SEBI, which alleged fund diversion, transfer of money to shell firms, share price manipulation, and running personal expenses from loan funds.

“The cutting-edge technology fighter jets are carrying out complex missions involving ground attack and electronic warfare drills,” defence sources told ANI.
“The assets of the Indian Air Force have been moved from multiple airbases, including from the eastern side,” they added.
The Indian Air Force has been practising for complex ground attack missions for operations in different terrains, including plains and mountainous areas, the sources said.
The Indian Air Force also holds an edge over its adversaries in the south Asian region with the inductions of Meteor air to air missiles and induction of long range high speed low drag missiles like the Rampage and Rocks.
The exercise is taking place at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan have risen after the Pahalgam attack.
The exercise is being closely monitored by the Air Headquarters. Tactical Air Combat and Development Establishment (TACDE) pilots of the Indian Air Force, the best aviators of the air force, are taking part in the exercise. TACDE pilots are often referred to as the ‘Top Gun’ pilots of the Indian Air Force.
The Indian Air Force was used to carry out the post-Pulwama attack strikes inside Pakistan in February 2019.
The court granted Balaji time till April 28 to decide upon it, pointing out that the bail was not granted to him on merits of the matter.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday told Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji that he must choose between retaining his post and remaining out on bail in the money laundering case linked to the ‘cash-for-jobs’ scam.
“You have to make a choice between the post (Minister) and freedom. What choice you want to make,” a bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih asked his counsel senior advocate Kapil Sibal.
The court granted Balaji time till April 28 to decide upon it, pointing out that the bail was not granted to him on merits of the matter.
The court was hearing the applications filed by the Enforcement Directorate and others seeking to recall the bail granted to Balaji on the grounds that he was influencing the witnesses in the case.
The court had on September 26, 2024 granted bail to Balaji. He took the oath as a Minister in DMK government on September 29.
The court subsequently expressed its displeasure and serious concern as to how Balaji was reappointed as a Cabinet Minister.
On Tuesday, the bench questioned his conduct and his reappointment by referring to the observations in a previous judgment which recorded that as a Minister, he had forced people to withdraw the complaints and the role played in the predicate offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The court pointed out it had granted bail to him only on the grounds of delay in trial and long incarceration.
The court was concerned about the misuse of Supreme Court’s liberal stand on bail in PMLA cases.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also said Balaji was granted bail not on merits, but on the ground of Article 21 violation.
However, Sibal said that the trial can be shifted out of the State if there was an apprehension of influence by him.
The court asked what signals the Supreme Court would be sending if such a person is allowed to be on bail, despite the categorical findings in the earlier judgment about the role played by him in the predicate offence.
The court also pointed out that his resignation as a Minister was cited as a “change in circumstances” to plead for bail before the High Court, however, soon after bail was granted by the Supreme Court, he took oath as a Minister.
“There are findings and judgement of this court attributing role to him in the predicate offence as Minister. Can we ignore that? What signals are we sending,” the bench asked.
The bench said it would say that it made a mistake by ignoring the previous judgment, which had recorded findings against Balaji.
“We will record it in the order that we have made a mistake by ignoring the judgements against you, because the entire hearing proceeded on the footing that he is no longer minister. We will accept our mistake,” the bench said.
Sibal insisted that there was no chance of Balaji influencing witnesses.
“There is no witness coming in the box, how will I influence,” Sibal asked.
“You are preventing them from coming,” the bench retorted.
“What troubles us is for the first time in case of PMLA we have applied a law that if case is not going to commence we will grant bail. When we read the order of the trial court and high court we were told that he is no longer minister. Therefore we ignored the allegation based on the judgements on the ground that he is no longer minister. Now you bring about a change within few days of order granting bail and he is again the minister,” the bench said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday attended the funeral of the pony rider who was among those killed in the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack on Tuesday. Abdullah condemned the attack and met with pony rider Syed Adil Hussain Shah’s family members, promising them all the possible support. The chief minister said that Hussain died trying to save the tourists during the attack.
At least 26 people were killed when terrorists opened fire on tourists in the popular Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam in one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Kashmir in recent years.
“I condemn this attack in the strongest terms. A poor local labourer has died in this cowardly attack. He was brave. He died trying to save the tourists. I have also heard that he even tried to snatch the gun from one of the terrorists. That was when he was made a target and shot,” Abdullah said while speaking to the media after Hussain’s funeral at Hapatnar in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The chief minister conveyed condolences to Hussain’s family and assured them full support of the government.
Notably, Syed Adil Hussain was the only local and only Muslim who died in the dastardly attack.
On Tuesday, at least 5–6 terrorists, clad in camouflage outfits and kurta-pyjamas, came to the Baisaran meadow from the dense pine forest surrounding the valley and opened fire with AK-47s.
India on Wednesday announced strong diplomatic measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and no entry for Pakistani nationals to India, following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
India on Wednesday launched a major diplomatic offensive against Pakistan, such as the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, and downgraded ties with the neighbouring country following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which killed 26 people.
The five measures, announced by the government, came after a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting was held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack – one of the worst attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past.
HERE’S FIVE MEASURES TAKEN BY INDIA
The Indus Waters Treaty – a key water-sharing agreement brokered in 1960 – will be held in abeyance with immediate effect until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism.
The integrated Attari-Wagah checkpost will be closed with immediate effect. Those who have crossed over with valid endorsements may return through that route before May 1, 2025.
Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India under the Saarc visa exemption scheme. Any SPES visas issued in the past to Pakistani nationals are deemed cancelled. Any Pakistani national currently in India under an SPES visa has 48 hours to leave India.
India will be withdrawing its Defence, Navy and Air advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Similarly, the Defence, Military, Naval and Air Advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in Delhi are declared persona non grata. They have a week to leave India.
The overall strength of the respective High Commissions will be brought down to 30.
PAHALGAM TERROR ATTACK
On Tuesday afternoon, five to six terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran meadow, which is around 5 kms from Pahalgam. The meadow – also known as ‘mini Switzerland’ – is accessible only by foot or by horseback. The Pahalgam carnage was one of the deadliest civilian attacks in the Kashmir Valley in recent years.
Eyewitnesses said the terrorists emerged from the surrounding pine forests and fired at people picnicking, riding ponies, or eating at food stalls. Most of the victims were tourists, including two foreigners from the UAE and Nepal, and two locals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudi Arabia when the attack occurred, cut short his visit and held a CCS meeting in Delhi to review Jammu and Kashmir’s security situation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah landed in Srinagar within hours of the terror attack and held a high-level security review with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police. He also visited the attack site in Pahalgam and met with the families of the victims and survivors.

In the wake of the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, India on Wednesday announced a series of sweeping diplomatic and strategic countermeasures against Pakistan. Framing the response as a decisive stand against “cross-border terrorism”, the Ministry of External Affairs outlined multiple steps, including the indefinite suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty that had endured three wars, and an immediate shutdown of the Integrated Check Post at the Attari-Wagah border – a crucial link for trade and people-to-people engagement between the two nations.
In a further blow to bilateral ties, Pakistani nationals have been barred from travelling to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, with all previously issued visas declared void. Those already present in India have been directed to leave the country within 48 hours.
Suspension of Indus Waters Cooperation: India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, under which 39 billion cubic meters of water from the Indus River system flows from India into Pakistan annually. The treaty, which governs the sharing of river waters between the two countries, has long been considered a symbol of cooperation even amid years-long conflict.
Closure of Attari-Wagah Border: The Integrated Check Post Attari-Wagah border, a critical point for trade and people-to-people contact between India and Pakistan, has been shut down with immediate effect. Those who have crossed with valid papers have been asked to return back to Pakistan before May 1, 2025.
Restricting SAARC Visa exemption scheme: Pakistani nationals are barred from travelling to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, with all previously issued visas deemed cancelled. Those already in the country are given 48 hours to leave.
Expulsion of Military Advisors: New Delhi has declared the Defence, Naval, and Air Advisers at the Pakistani High Commission persona non grata, giving them a week to exit India. In a similar move, New Delhi will also withdraw its own Defence, Navy, and Air officials from the High Commission in Islamabad.
Reduction of High Commission Staff Strength: India has asked Pakistan to reduce its diplomatic presence in New Delhi to a skeletal staff of 30, slashing the mission’s current operating capacity of 55.

A day after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam killed at least 26 people, security forces have detained around 1,500 suspects across Kashmir for questioning, top police sources told Times Now.
The attack took place on Tuesday at the Baisaran meadows near Pahalgam in the Anantnag district, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir. Most of the victims were tourists from other Indian states and all were males.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Wednesday, security agencies released sketches of three suspects believed to be involved in the massacre. The men, identified as Pakistani nationals Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha, were known by their aliases Moosa, Yunus, and Asif. Officials said the black-and-white sketches were created with input from survivors. The attackers were described as young men with beards.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security upon returning from Saudi Arabia. The committee includes senior ministers such as Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who cut short a US visit to return.
Meanwhile, Shah visited the site of the attack, Baisaran meadows, on Wednesday, where he was briefed by top army and police officials on the suspected routes used by the attackers. He also visited the injured at a hospital in Anantnag and attended a wreath-laying ceremony for the victims in Srinagar.
In a post on X, he wrote, “Bharat will not bend to terror. The culprits of this dastardly terror attack will not be spared.”
The Union Home Minister also assured that security forces will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to the book.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday asserted that those responsible for the “cowardly terrorist attack” on innocent citizens in Pahalgam will soon get a “strong response” to their nefarious acts on Indian soil.
Singh, while delivering the annual Arjan Singh Memorial lecture, while vowing a befitting reply also said India will not only hunt down the people who perpetrated the attack but will also trace those “sitting behind the scenes” who had conspired to carry out the deadly act on the Indian soil.

The CCS condemned the attack in the strongest terms and expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and hoped for the early recovery of the injured.
Strong expressions of support and solidarity have been received from many Governments around the world, which have unequivocally condemned this terror attack. The CCS recorded its appreciation for such sentiments, which reflect zero tolerance for terrorism.
In the briefing to the CCS, the cross-border linkages of the terrorist attack were brought out. It was noted that this attack came in the wake of the successful holding of elections in the Union Territory and its steady progress towards economic growth and development.
Recognizing the seriousness of this terrorist attack, the CCS decided upon the following measures:
(i) The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 will be held in abeyance with immediate effect, until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism.
(ii) The Integrated Check Post Attari will be closed with immediate effect. Those who have crossed over with valid endorsements may return through that route before 01 May 2025.
(iii) Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas. Any SVES visas issued in the past to Pakistani nationals are deemed cancelled. Any Pakistani national currently in India under SVES visa has 48 hours to leave India.
(iv) The Defence/Military, Naval and Air Advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi are declared Persona Non Grata. They have a week to leave India. India will be withdrawing its own Defence/Navy/Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. These posts in the respective High Commissions are deemed annulled. Five support staff of the Service Advisors will also be withdrawn from both High Commissions.
(v) The overall strength of the High Commissions will be brought down to 30 from the present 55 through further reductions, to be effected by 01 May 2025.

In the financial year 2026-27 India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to expand by 6.3%, as per the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook report. In its January report, the IMF had pegged India’s 2025-26 GDP growth at 6.5%.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday revised down its projection for India’s economic growth in the current financial year to 6.2 per cent from its earlier estimate of 6.5 per cent, citing global uncertainties and trade tensions.
In the financial year 2026-27 India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to expand by 6.3 per cent, as per the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook report. In its January report, the IMF had pegged India’s 2025-26 GDP growth at 6.5 per cent.
“For India, the growth outlook is relatively more stable at 6.2 per cent in 2025, supported by private consumption, particularly in rural areas, but this rate is 0.3 percentage point lower than that in the January 2025 WEO Update on account of higher levels of trade tensions and global uncertainty,” IMF noted in its report. Here 2025 means financial year 2025-26 (FY26).
The IMF’s projection is lower than the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 6.5 per cent. In its monetary policy review earlier this month the RBI cut its India FY26 growth projection to 6.5 per cent from 6.7 per cent. The Economic Survey has pegged FY26 growth in the range of 6.3 to 6.8 per cent.
On Tuesday, the IMF cut its global growth forecast by 50 basis points to 2.8 per cent for the 2025 calendar year. The IMF has cut the US economy growth projection by a full percentage point to 1.8 per cent while China’s growth forecast has been lowered to 4 per cent from January’s projection of 4.6 per cent.
The multilateral lender noted that a sharp increase in tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on April 2 “will lead to a significant slowdown in global growth in the near term.”
“While many of the scheduled tariff increases are on hold for now, the combination of measures and countermeasures has hiked US and global tariff rates to centennial highs… the global economy is now characterised by a high degree of economic and financial integration, with supply chains and financial flows crisscrossing the world, whose potential unwinding could constitute a major source of economic upheaval,” it said.
“At this juncture, while the situation remains fluid, risks remain firmly tilted to the downside. The global economy showed surprising resilience during the severe shocks of the past four years and still bears significant scars. It is now being severely tested once again, especially in emerging markets and developing economies with more limited buffers,” the IMF added.

As the echoes of gunfire still reverberated in the minds of survivors, chilling details emerged of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 28 civilians, including two foreigners.
The attack, one of the deadliest in Kashmir in recent years, unfolded in Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination near Pahalgamin south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Gulzar Ahmad, a local resident, was among the first to witness the chaos. He described the moments leading up to the attack, noting the rising panic among both tourists and locals. “
We were standing at the stand when some customers had gone to the upper side,” Ahmad said. “At around 2:45 PM, we saw people running in all directions, screaming. We asked what had happened, and that’s when we learned a gunshot had been fired. It was clear something terrible was happening.”
Ahmad, like many others, was thrown into confusion and fear. “The noise of the gunshots was deafening,” he recalled. “People were running in every direction, trying to find shelter, but we didn’t know where to go. It felt like a nightmare.”
Among the most heart-wrenching stories was that of Pallavi, a devastated wife who spoke to local news channels from a hospital in Pahalgam. Her voice quivered as she recounted the horrifying moments leading to the death of her husband.
“My husband was shot dead by terrorists right in front of us,” she said, filled with disbelief and sorrow. “I begged them to shoot me too, but they told me to stay alive and convey a message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
She paused, overcome with emotion, before continuing. “They wanted me to tell the world what they had done. I never imagined I would witness something so terrifying, let alone lose my husband this way.”
A disturbing video, recorded by an eyewitness who narrowly escaped the attack, has since surfaced online. In the footage, the survivor, visibly shaken, can be heard saying, “Terrorists have attacked. We narrowly escaped, but God will protect us. [Yaha pe attack hua hai aatankwadiyo ka, hum log baal baal bache hai, parmata raksha karega].”

A trainee pilot died after a training aircraft crashed in the Shashti Nagar area in Gujarat’s Amreli on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the plane, which belongs to a private aviation academy, fell into a tree before crashing into an open plot. The plane then caught fire and the pilot died.
Fire officer HC Gadhvi said that they received the information about the crash at 12:52 pm, and a team was rushed to the spot.
“We controlled the fire. The pilot of the plane was seen inside. The pilot was sent to the hospital. The pilot died in the accident,” Gadhvi added.
Amreli Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Kharat, said that the aircraft crash-landed into a residential area in the Giriya Road area of Amreli town at around 12:30 pm due to unknown reasons. He said the trainee pilot died on the spot, reported PTI.
Kharat added that the pilot was flying solo and it had taken off from the Amreli airport. “After taking off from the Amreli airport with a male trainee pilot, the trainer aircraft of an aviation academy, which operates from the airport, crashed into a residential area. The trainee pilot, who was flying solo, died in the crash while the aircraft was gutted in flames. No one else was injured in the accident,” Kharat said.
The office added that the plane belonged to a Delhi-based aviation academy, which provides pilot training from the Amreli airport.
Local police have started the process to lodge a case of accidental death and investigation to find out the exact cause of the crash. Gadhvi said that four teams of a local fire brigade rushed to Shastrinagar after learning about the plane crash.

Air India is likely to take up the Boeing planes rejected by Chinese carriers amid its tariff war with the United States, reported Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. This might be India’s first big gain from the US-China trade war.
Air India needs aircrafts in its fleet to expedite its revival, and it plans to approach Boeing about acquiring the jets manufactured for Chinese carriers before US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs, the report claimed. There has been
Earlier in March this year, Air India had accepted 41 737 Max jets originally built for Chinese airlines after their deliveries were deferred. Apart from Air India, Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd. is also in talks with Boeing to take up its carriers, reported Bernama.
Why China Paused Boeing Jet Deliveries
According to reports, China ordered its airlines not to take any further deliveries of US-manufactured Boeing jets. Beijing has asked Chinese carriers to halt any purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from US companies.
Further, the Chinese government is also considering ways to provide assistance to airlines that lease Boeing jets and are facing higher costs.
US-China Tariff War
The United States and China have engaged in a rapid tit-for-tat exchange over the past three weeks, with each side raising tariffs on the other’s products. The trade war began after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping reciprocal tariffs on all the trading partners of the US.
In February and March, Trump slapped two rounds of 10 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods, citing allegations of Beijing’s role in the fentanyl crisis. Following this, the US President imposed 34 per cent tariffs on all Chinese goods as he announced reciprocal tariffs on April 2.

Widespread anger and grief erupted across Jammu following the brutal terrorist attack in Baisaran, near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists. In response, several organisations including the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Transporters’ Association, Jammu Bar Association, and the Congress party have called for a complete shutdown in Jammu (Kashmir Bandh) on Wednesday to protest the killings.
JCCI President Arun Gupta, while announcing the bandh, said, “We have given a bandh call tomorrow as a mark of protest against the killing of tourists in Kashmir. We condemn it in the strongest terms. We urge Jammu people to join in, making this shutdown complete.” Gupta demanded strict action from authorities, urging the government to eliminate those responsible for the carnage.
“We stand with the families who lost their loved ones. We urge Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure that those involved, along with their overground supporters, are eliminated,” he added. Calling the shutdown a symbolic expression of collective outrage, Gupta further stated, “We want to send a clear message that such barbarism has no place in a civilised society. Targeting innocent tourists is not just an act of terror, it is an assault on humanity.”
VHP President Rajesh Gupta echoed similar sentiments, describing the killings as faith-based. “It is a massacre by terrorists based on faith. They identified people by religion and killed them. We will not tolerate it,” he said. Urging calm amid anger, he added, “We request the people of Jammu to maintain calm, even though there is deep anger over the killing of Hindus.”
All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Association Chairman Karan Wazir reiterated the unified stand of different groups, saying, “We, the Chamber of Commerce, Transporters and Bar Association, are united in our stand on the bandh tomorrow.” He said the shutdown is both a tribute to the victims and a message of unity.
Shops, businesses, and markets will remain closed in Jammu on Wednesday, and public transport is expected to stay off the roads.
Congress Joins Protest
The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) also supported the bandh call. In a statement, JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma urged citizens to observe a complete and peaceful bandh: “The killing of innocents and the spread of terrorism on our soil is intolerable. To send a strong message and express solidarity with the victims and their families, a complete bandh should be observed.”
Outpouring of Political Condemnation
Political leaders across party lines condemned the bloodshed and called for immediate action against those responsible. Senior BJP leader Ravinder Raina said, “The enemies of Kashmir have once again bled the Valley by targeting innocent tourists in Pahalgam. Pakistani terrorists have committed a heinous crime and sin.” He further said, “They cannot face the brave soldiers of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and our paramilitary forces. These cowardly terrorists targeted unarmed, innocent tourists.”
Panun Kashmir: Attack a Continuation of Genocidal Violence
Panun Kashmir and its youth wing, Youth4Panun Kashmir, also issued a scathing statement condemning the killings. Dr Agnishakher, Convenor of Panun Kashmir, said, “This deliberate assault on unarmed tourists is a grim reminder of the persistent jihadist terrorism that continues to threaten the region. An ideology rooted in the same venom that drove the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s.”
He added, “The Pahalgam massacre is not an isolated act but a chilling continuation of the jihadist violence that orchestrated the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, forcing their exodus from their ancestral homeland.” Criticising successive governments, he said, “For decades, governments have refused to acknowledge this atrocity, ignoring our repeated alerts about the ideological forces fuelling such terror. The notion that tourism can resolve terrorism is a dangerous oversimplification that sidesteps the need for a robust confrontation with this ideology.”

A Belgian court has refused bail to diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, one of the main accused in the ₹13,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. The court ruling came on Tuesday during a hearing in Antwerp, where Choksi was arrested on April 12, PTI reported.
His lawyer, Vijay Aggarwal, confirmed that the court rejected the bail request on Tuesday.
Choksi, 65, was caught by the Belgian authorities in Antwerp after an extradition request from Indian agencies, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
A senior official familiar with the case stated that Choksi will now fight his extradition from jail. He had been residing in Antigua since fleeing India in 2018 and had acquired citizenship of the Caribbean nation, despite his Indian citizenship being said to be valid. In November 2023, he reportedly arrived in Belgium claiming to seek medical treatment.
Indian agencies have provided Belgian authorities with at least two open-ended arrest warrants, issued by a special Mumbai court in 2018 and 2021, as part of their extradition request.
Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, several family members, employees, and bank officials, was named in cases filed by the CBI and ED in 2018. The charges are related to a massive loan fraud involving fraudulent issuance of Letters of Undertaking (LOUs) and manipulation of Foreign Letters of Credit (FLCs) at PNB’s Brady House branch in Mumbai.
Aggarwal has previously stated that his client is “extremely sick and undergoing treatment for cancer.”
Kashmir Pahalgam Terror Attack Live Updates: Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, killing 26 people in the biggest terror attack on civilians since 26/11.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Wednesday morning, cutting short his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, and held an emergency meeting with NSA Ajit Doval, EAM Dr S Jaishankar.
He will conduct a CCS meeting at 11 am today in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, took responsibility for the attack, top intelligence sources told News18.
Terrorists targeted a group of people, including women and elderly individuals, in the brazen attack after noon. Eyewitnesses told security forces that two to three men rushed in dressed in military fatigues, firing indiscriminately at tourists while they were enjoying the Baisaran Meadows of Pahalgam on horseback. Intelligence sources and eyewitnesses told News18 that the terrorists inquired about the religion before shooting them dead.
Security forces were rushed to the area, and a massive anti-terrorist operation was launched to hunt down the assailants. Videos of the aftermath of the attack showed people lying motionless and bloodied on the ground while women were frantically looking for their loved ones.
The authorities released the list of those who died in the terror attack. The deceased ones included Sushil Nathyal, Syed Adil Hussain Shah, Hemant Suhas Joshi, Vinay Narwal, Atul Shrikant Moni, Neeraj Udhawani, Bitan Adhikari, Sudeep Neupane, Shubham Dwivedi, Prashant Kumar Satpathi, Manish Ranjan (Excise Inspector), N. The Ferrari 458 Spider, owned by 33-year-old music producer Honkon, caught fire shortly after he began driving it. Honkon had reportedly spent ten years saving up to buy the luxury car, only to see it destroyed within minutes.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday backed off from threats to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell after days of intensifying criticisms of the central bank chief for not cutting interest rates.
“I have no intention of firing him,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday. “I would like to see him be a little more active in terms of his idea to lower interest rates,” he added.
The de-escalation drew an immediate thumbs up from Wall Street, as equity index futures jumped by nearly 2% on the resumption of trading on Tuesday evening. Stocks, bonds and the U.S. dollar had all slumped on Monday after Trump over the Easter holiday weekend repeatedly attacked Powell for not cutting interest rates further since the president resumed office in January.
“Whether this reflects Monday’s brutal foretaste of what would happen in markets if he did try to fire Powell, or was the plan all along, it is a clear positive,” wrote Evercore ISI Vice Chairman Krishna Guha. “It materially reduces the likelihood of worst case outcomes including stagflation and the morphing of the tariff crisis into a sovereign debt crisis, though these risks remain.”
Also during his question-and-answer volley with reporters on Tuesday, Trump expressed optimism that a trade deal with China could “substantially” cut tariffs, which also provided a boost for investors. He said a deal would result in “substantially” lower tariffs on Chinese goods, suggesting that a final deal will not “be anywhere near” current tariff rates. But “it won’t be zero,” he added.
The combination of the rocky rollout of Trump’s tariffs and, more recently, his repeated barbs at Powell and the Fed had rattled investors and intensified selling of U.S. assets including stocks, U.S. Treasuries and the dollar.
Trump’s broadsides were often accompanied by threatening remarks, such as last week’s social media posting that Powell’s termination as Fed chair “cannot come fast enough” and more personal jabs, such as calling Powell “a major loser.” The threats spooked financial markets that view the Fed’s independence as critical to underpinning its credibility as the world’s most influential central bank and a cornerstone of global financial stability.
But while Trump seems to have set aside those threats for now, his criticisms of Fed rate policy remain just as pointed.
“We think that it’s a perfect time to lower the rate, and we’d like to see our chairman be early or on time, as opposed to late,” Trump said.
OLD FEUD

Trump’s sour grapes with Powell date back to the Republican’s first term in the White House. Trump elevated Powell from a Fed Board of Governors member to the central bank’s head but was soon irritated by ongoing rate increases under Powell’s watch. Trump openly mused about firing Powell, but was ultimately dissuaded by his advisers.
Whether Trump has the authority is unclear. Powell, for his part, insists that the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 that created the central bank will not allow it. Trump, meanwhile, has said that if he wanted Powell out, he would be gone “real fast.”
The law stipulates that the seven Fed governors, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate to staggered 14-year terms, can only be removed for “cause” – long thought to mean misconduct, not policy disagreement.
That said, the law omits reference to limits on removal from its description of the four-year term of the Fed chair, who is one of the seven governors.
Trump’s harsh rhetoric came alongside court cases now proceeding over his firing of officials from other independent federal boards and agencies. Those are being watched closely in Fed circles as potential proxies for whether Trump has the authority to fire Fed officials long presumed to be able to pursue monetary policy free from political influence.
The Fed lowered interest rates by a percentage point late last year to the current range of 4.25% to 4.50%, but has held them unchanged in the two policy meetings convened since Trump returned to the White House. The Fed’s next rate-setting meeting is in two weeks.
Fed policymakers are concerned that the aggressive tariffs rolled out by Trump since early February could rekindle inflation that they had already found harder than expected to return to their 2% target. At the same time, policymakers worry their job could be complicated further if tariffs slow growth and drive up unemployment while also pressuring up inflation.
The result is a wait-and-see posture regarding further rate cuts, though most policymakers still see some rate reductions as likely later this year.
Interest rate futures traders pared bets on Fed policy easing after Trump’s remarks, and now are pricing three quarter-point interest-rate cuts by year’s end, versus the four seen as earlier as more likely.

At least 26 people were killed Tuesday (Apr 22) in Indian-administered Kashmir when gunmen opened fire on tourists, security sources told AFP, in the insurgency-hit region’s deadliest attack on civilians since 2000.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi decried the “heinous act” in the summer retreat of Pahalgam, pledging the attackers “will be brought to justice”.
The killings come a day after US Vice President JD Vance began a four-day, largely personal visit to India.
A tour guide in Pahalgam told AFP he reached the scene after hearing gunfire and had transported some of the wounded away on horseback.
Waheed, who gave only one name, said he saw several men lying dead on the ground, while a witness who requested anonymity said the attackers were “clearly sparing women”.
Pahalgam lies 90km by road from the key city of Srinagar.
One security source said that foreign tourists were among those shot, but there was no official confirmation.
Other security sources and some Indian media reported late Tuesday that 26 people had died, an increase from the 24 that a senior local police officer had earlier told AFP.
No group has claimed responsibility, but rebels in the Muslim-majority region have waged an insurgency since 1989.
They are seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan, which controls a smaller part of the Kashmir region and, like India, claims it in full.
Vance offered condolences in a social media post, while President Donald Trump said “the United States stands strong with India against Terrorism.”
Modi, who is in Saudi Arabia, has cut short his trip to return home, foreign ministry officials said.
MALES TARGETED
“The militants, I can’t say how many, came out of the forest near an open small meadow and started firing,” said the witness who asked not to be identified.
“They were clearly sparing women and kept shooting at men, sometimes single shot and sometimes many bullets, it was like a storm,” said the man, who cares for horses that are popular with tourists in the area.
The witness said dozens of people fled as the gunmen opened fire.
“They all started running around in panic”, he added.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that “the attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years”, with the death toll still uncertain.
“This attack on our visitors is an abomination,” he added in a statement. “The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman and worthy of contempt.”
HOLIDAY DESTINATION
Medics at a hospital in Anantnag said they had received some of the wounded, including with gunshot wounds.
India has an estimated 500,000 soldiers permanently deployed in the territory, but fighting decreased since Modi’s government revoked Kashmir’s limited autonomy in 2019.
“Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger,” Modi said in a statement.
In recent years, the authorities have promoted the mountainous region as a holiday destination, both for winter skiing, and to escape the sweltering summer heat elsewhere in India.
Around 3.5 million tourists visited Kashmir in 2024, the majority domestic visitors.
In 2023, India hosted a G20 tourism meeting in Srinagar under tight security in a bid to show that what officials call “normalcy and peace” were returning after a massive crackdown.
A string of resorts are being developed, including some close to the heavily militarised de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and strongly condemned the terror attack which took place in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, extending America’s full support to India to bring to justice the perpetrators of the heinous act.
“President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Modi and conveyed his deepest condolences at the loss of innocent lives in the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X.
“President Trump strongly condemned the terror attack and expressed full support to India to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous attack. India and the United States stand together in the fight against terror,” Jaiswal added.
PM Modi, in response, thanked the US President for his support and vowed to bring the “cowardly terrorists” responsible for the deadly attack to justice.
“PM Modi thanked President Trump for his support and said that India is determined to bring the perpetrators and backers of this cowardly and heinous terrorist attack to justice,” government sources told India Today TV.
“Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against terrorism. We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!” he wrote on Truth Social.

Ramban: Newlywed Nazir Ahmad and Zaheera Bano were expecting a smooth ride into their marital life.
But as they trudged through sludge and debris-filled roads of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district brought in by cloudburst-triggered flash floods and landslides, the resolute couple in wedding attire was on cloud nine, insisting the experience solidified their bond.

“It was tiring but, in a way, it made the day even more special,” said Ahmad.
Like Ahmad and Zaheera, many newlywed couples had to face a similar ordeal a day after calamity hit the district, blocking the arterial Jammu-Srinagar national highway and rendering many other roads impassable.
Sunil Kumar led his wedding processing, complete with ‘band-baaja’, on foot through muck to the bride’s residence.
To the surprise of many who assembled near Usman Hotel in the Ramban old highway market to have a look at the devastation caused by the flash floods, Kumar descended from the hilltop village accompanied by over three dozen people who were part of the procession.
“We are helpless before nature and since the date of our marriage has been fixed long back, we decided to go ahead with it,” he said as he moved through the ravages caused by landslides.
Nazir Ahmad and his bride were in luck as a few Army personnel gave them a lift in their vehicle to make their journey from Bano’s Chenani home to his Ramban residence a bit easier. “We have another four kilometres to go before we reach our destination,” he said, thanking the Army for extending a helping hand.
Through her bright red veil, Bano said they had been walking for more than one hour but it was not that exhausting, thanks to the pleasant weather.
Mashkoor Ahmad, a resident of Neel, grabbed eyeballs as he along with his family members walked to Hamand Kamra village early in the morning to formalise his ‘Nikkah’. He said that they left home around 6 am.
“I have to walk six kilometres more,” he said, adding they plan to return on foot along with the bride.
Three persons, including two minor siblings, were killed and more than 100 people were rescued after heavy rainfall and cloudbursts triggered flash floods, landslides and mudslides and caused massive damage to infrastructure, including roads and residential buildings, in Ramban district.

Zeeshan Siddique, son of former state minister Baba Siddique, who was shot last year, received a death threat through his email. Zeeshan has received several such death threats ever since his father’s murder.
Baba Siddique’s son and NCP leader Zeeshan Siddique received a death threat on his email. Bandra Police reached his house and recorded statements.
Former Maharashtra MLA and NCP leader Zeeshan Siddique on Monday claimed that he has received a death threat via email. The message, purportedly from a ‘D-company’ member, warned him he would meet the same end as his late father, Baba Siddique, unless he paid Rs 10 crore.
“Since the last three days I am receiving emails continuously, with content that ‘you would be killed just like Baba Siddique if you don’t pay Rs 10 crore’. The sender claimed to be a member of the D-company and warned me not to contact police,” Zeeshan Siddique said while speaking to news agency PTI.
In response to Siddique’s complaint, the police have initiated an investigation into the threat and extortion demand, and are in the process of recording his statement.
Baba Siddique, a 66-year-old NCP (Ajit Pawar) leader, was shot dead on October 12, 2024, by three assailants outside Zeeshan Siddique’s office building in Bandra East, Mumbai.
Over the past six months, Zeeshan Siddique has received multiple death threats. These threats have been linked to attempts at extortion and are believed to be connected to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which is also implicated in being involved in his father’s murder.
Last year, in October, a 20-year-old tattoo artist from Noida, identified as Mohammad Tayyab, was arrested for sending eight WhatsApp messages to Zeeshan Siddique’s office. Tayyab, who goes by the name of Gufran Khan, claimed to have overheard members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang discuss plans to harm Siddique and actor Salman Khan with the use of drones.
He also alleged that gang members were in his vicinity, carrying firearms. Authorities stated to the press that Khan was motivated by the intent to extort money by providing false information about the threats.
Later that month, another Whatsapp message was sent, but this time to the Mumbai Traffic Police Helpline from a 56-year-old man from Bandra West, named Azam Mohammed Mustafa. He was demanding 2 crore from Siddique and Salman Khan.
Mustafa was a jobless returnee from Saudi Arabia who had reportedly sent the message after watching news coverage of previous threats. He was apprehended within a day of sending the message and was arrested.

A woman was found dead in a field on Sunday morning with her throat slit and both her ankles severed from the body in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district. The chopped-up body parts were found in a nearby pond. The reason for the murder was allegedly two thick silver anklets, or kada, on the woman’s feet.
The 50-year-old woman was wearing two-kg silver anklets on her feet, which the accused looted and fled, police said.
On Sunday morning, Urmila Meena left her morning to go to the field to cut wood. When she did not return till 11 am, the family started looking for her. They informed the Bamanwas police station upon finding her body in the farmland.
The murder sparked protests in the village, with the villagers blocking a road by placing the woman’s body on it. The angry villagers sought the arrest of the people behind the murder within 24 hours.
The police tried to convince the villagers and the family members to unblock the road, but the villagers remained adamant about their demand.

The central government of India on Monday announced a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect for the passing of Pope Francis, of these, two days will be observed on April 22 and 23, and the third on the pontiff’s funeral day.
The pontiff, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced in a video statement on Monday. In his 12-year-long papacy, the Pope suffered various ailments.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a statement, said, “His Holiness Pope Francis, Supreme Pontiff of the Holy See passed away on April 21. As a mark of respect, three-day state mourning shall be observed throughout India.”
As per the schedule, the two days of state mourning will be April 22, Tuesday, and April 23, Wednesday. The third day of state mourning will be observed on the day of Pope Francis’ funeral, the statement added.
During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where the Tricolour is flown regularly, and there will be no official entertainment.
The Pope’s death came just a day after Easter celebrations. The pontiff had on Sunday called for freedom of thought and tolerance in his Easter Sunday address.
His speech read, “There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and respect for the views of others.” It also condemned the anti-Semitism, and the “dramatic and deplorable” situation in Gaza.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences over the Pope’s passing and said that he will always be remembered as a “beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world”.
The PM shared images of his meeting with the Pope and posted on X, “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world.”
India is expected to sign another free trade agreement with the US on some farm products, but it also wants to increase exports to the country on some products like rice, fisheries, and spices

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endearing meeting with the family of US Vice-President JD Vance on Monday took place alongside some hard business talk. In the short bilateral meeting between the two leaders, the mood was accommodating rather than confrontational, which mirrors the pattern of the US-India trade negotiation.
India has been actively engaged in bilateral trade talks with the United States, for which virtual discussions have been followed up with physical deliberation.
According to top sources, the mood in the bilateral meeting between Modi and Vance was keeping in mind the goal of increasing trade between India and US to $500 billion by 2030. The main area of negotiations is the farm sector.
While India has agreed to buy more oil and natural gas from the US, it has also cut reciprocal tariffs on some agricultural products like pistachios and almonds. But, the US wants more.
The country wants more of its agricultural products to be exported to India. The three main crops, which it wants should have greater access to the Indian markets, are corn, (maize), cotton and soybean.
This is where a bit of a dilemma comes in for India, which is primarily an agrarian economy. The three contentious farm laws had to be rolled back as, politically, the central government cannot afford to alienate farmers. Hence, the focus of the trade talks was also on agricultural exports.
India is expected to sign another free trade agreement with the US on some farm products, but it also wants to increase exports to the US on some products like rice, fisheries, and spices.
The video ended with Kamya revealing the newly-decorated room to her parents, who were astonished by the transformation.
Screengrab of the viral video.
In a bold experiment, Indian entrepreneur Kamya Gupta, an AI enthusiast, leveraged ChatGPT to revolutionise her room transformation project, effectively using the AI tool as her virtual interior designer.
Gupta made a reel of her room’s transformation and shared the whole process on social media, showing how the OpenAI chatbot helped her in redecorating her room. The results are stunning. A warm and minimalistic space that’s both aesthetically stunning and deeply personal.
The transformation started with a simple prompt to ChatGPT: “I need to repaint this wall in a colour that goes with the wooden flooring, but I want to make the room eclectic and I need to fill it with frames. So what would you suggest?”
The AI assistant provided expert guidance on layout, art arrangement, and personalised details like neon signs. Kamya even uploaded screenshots of her desired furniture and light fixtures, which the AI incorporated into a customised mockup.
The video ended with Kamya revealing the newly-decorated room to her parents, who were astonished by the transformation.
“Honestly, this is insane. A thought that I had in my mind for years came to life just through a conversation,” Gupta wrote in the caption of her Instagram post, sharing photos of her newly renovated space. “As an AI enthusiast, I got to explore and learn so many new features just by being curious. Doing this for my parents, getting the best reaction, having all my core memories up, and finally having my chill spot—I’m thankful and scared of AI at the same time,” she wrote on the post.
The room makeover quickly went viral on social media, with users marvelling at the stunning transformation and the post racking up engagement.
“The best use of AI I’ve seen in a while 💯,” one user wrote. “Kudos to you for your patience and it’s good to watch people use AI smartly instead of jumping on to ChatGPT for ghibli,” wrote the other.

Pope Francis, the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope, passed away at 88 on Monday, leaving behind a legacy of humility, service, and dialogue. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced his death from the Casa Santa Marta, where the pontiff had been living. The devastating news came just a day after Pope Francis made a surprise public appearance on Easter Sunday, addressing more than 35,000 faithful in St Peter’s Square.
The Vatican said that the pontiff had been hospitalised for weeks battling a complex lung infection which led to early stages of kidney insufficiency. “This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the statement published by the Vatican.
Aman Gupta, the co-founder and CMO of electronics brand boAt Lifestyle, who also takes part in the reality show Shark Tank India, advises Indian entrepreneurs to maintain a sustainable business via compliance and ethics. (X)
Business entertainment TV show, Shark Tank India judge, and Boat co-founder, Aman Gupta, in his social media post on LinkedIn, highlighted that the BluSmart crisis serves as a reality check for others in the startup ecosystem.
“The BluSmart situation is tough. Sad for everyone involved. But also a much-needed reality check for all of us in the ecosystem,” said Aman Gupta in his post.
The angel investor also expressed empathy for the investors who lost money, the employees who lost their jobs, and the customers who lost a cab-hailing service. He said that this incident had also “dented” the ecosystem.
“But more than that, this has also dented trust in the ecosystem. You’ll now hear: ‘Yaad hai Blusmart ke saath kya hua tha?!’” said Gupta.
‘Damage we can’t afford’
Aman Gupta also emphasised how global multinational companies (MNCs) have had their meltdowns, and even though people might say that this incident will cause damage that the Indian startup can’t afford, the key factor is how the system bounces back after the issue.
“And, one might say that that’s the damage we can’t afford. But, let’s zoom out. Even global MNCs have had their meltdowns. What matters is how we as a country and ecosystem bounce back,” he said.
He also showed his confidence in the Indian startup ecosystem, and highlighted how the compliance and ethical factor in a company is not just another tick box, but the ‘foundation’ of the system.
“The Indian startup ecosystem is resilient. We always rise stronger. And we will this time too. For all founders, here’s the biggest takeaway: Compliance and ethics aren’t boxes to tick. They’re the foundation,” said the Shark Tank India judge.
The ‘not-so-cool tasks’
Aman Gupta also said that the so-called “not so cool tasks” like maintaining a clean book, carrying out timely audits, and maintaining transparency are the only ways to keep businesses sustainable.
“Being a CA, I’ve seen this up close: Clean books, Timely audits, Transparent reporting. All so called “not so cool tasks” make businesses sustainable. Aur bachpan mein parents ne sikhaya tha – Jo bhi karo, dil se karo. Par Galat na karo. Same rule applies in business too,” he said.
He urged the startup founders to push more towards “due diligence” activities and not just in finance but also in other aspects of the business like the company culture, along with operations and responsibility.
“EQ, IQ & GQ (Governance Quotient) sab important hote hai. I hope more founders push for real due diligence, not just in finance, but in culture, operations, and responsibility. Because at the end of the day your vision matters. Your growth matters. But how you build matters just as much,” he said.
“Let’s use this as a reminder: To build not just fast, but right,” said Aman Gupta, highlighting the BluSmart crisis.
BluSmart Crisis
Several passengers in the cities of Delhi-NCR, Bangalore, and Mumbai were unable to book cabs through the ride-hailing app BluSmart. The company started to wind down its operations on Wednesday, April 16, after failing multiple attempts to raise fresh capital for the business.
Moreover, the company promoter, Anmol Singh Jaggi, is currently facing a fraud and forgery accusation by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi).

Punjab Police on Saturday said they have busted two major Khalistani terror modules backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), arresting 13 people and seizing a large cache of weapons and explosives.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the modules were being operated from abroad by France-based Satnam Singh, also known as Satta, and Greece-based Jaswinder Singh, also known as Mannu Agwan. Both are linked to the banned group Babbar Khalsa International.
This is a major blow to transnational terror networks targeting peace and stability in Punjab, Yadav said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Police recovered two rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) including a launcher, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) weighing 2.5 kg each, two hand grenades with detonators, two kilograms of RDX with remote control, five pistols including Beretta and Glock models, six magazines, 44 live cartridges, a wireless communication set, and three vehicles.
In two intelligence-led operations, Punjab Police has successfully busted ISI-backed terror modules being operated by Babbar Khalsa International (#BKI) from abroad.

The four suspects linked to the first module were identified as Jatinder Singh, also known as Honey, and Jagjit Singh, also known as Jagga, both from Kapurthala, and Harpreet Singh and Jagroop Singh from Hoshiarpur. Police said their network was managed by Satnam Singh from France.
Nine operatives from the second module, allegedly led by Jaswinder Singh from Greece, were also arrested. Their identities were not immediately released.
The victim, 80-year-old Uddhav Singh Joshi, has alleged that the doctor initially misbehaved with him and then dragged him out of the hospital. He said the doctor also kicked and slapped him repeatedly.

A senior citizen was dragged, slapped and kicked inside a District Hospital in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh and the victim has alleged it was a doctor who misbehaved with him and thrashed him brutally. 80-year-old Uddhav Singh Joshi said he had gone to the government hospital with his wife for treatment and they were standing in a queue.
He claimed one of the doctors, Dr Rajesh Mishra, first misbehaved with him and then said that they were not following the rules while standing in the queue. He said the doctor then dragged him, kicked and slapped him as well. Joshi further alleged that his wife was also beaten by the doctor.
Responding to the concern, Civil Surgeon, Doctor GL Ahirwar said, “Yes, there was an argument between the doctor and the senior citizen, but the victim’s allegations are false that he was kicked and doctor misbehaved with him.”
However, in a video that has surfaced, a man is seen dragging the elderly out of the hospital. He then slaps and kicks the victim. The incident reportedly happened on April 17.
Ahirwar said the doctor has been instructed not to behave in any such manner, and elderly people can be prioritised in the queue. However, the matter has now become political with the Congress training guns at BJP’s Mohan Yadav government in the state.
“Chhatarpur incident clearly shows that Mohan Govt has entirely failed in giving better health services and this govt has turned into a JUNGALRAAJ,” said Abhinav Barolia, Congress Spokesperson.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Ajay Yadav said that the administration has been asked to act against those guilty. “The Dist administration has been given Instructions to take action against those whoever are guilty in it … As BJP government in MP is committed to the privileged service of Poor and Senior citizens on priority, ” he added.

Jasmin has frequently been spotted attending MI matches at Wankhede Stadium, leading netizens to believe that the ongoing dating rumours may have some truth.
Earlier, following Mumbai Indian’s IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Jasmin was seen leaving with the WAGs (wives and girlfriends) in the official team bus allotted for them.
Walia’s appearance with the WAGs seemingly confirmed her relationship with Hardik, as the bus is only allotted to family members of the cricketers.
The dating rumours between Jasmin and Hardik began after the duo posted separate photos from the same locations, including a trip to Greece. Following the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy match, they were also spotted relaxing by the beach in Dubai, fuelling further speculation.
The duo have yet to confirm the dating rumours.
Hardik was earlier married to Nataaa Stankovic. The duo tied the knot on May 31, 2020, and welcomed their first child, son Agastya on July 30 of the same year. In 2023, they renewed their vows with a lavish ceremony in Udaipur.
The former couple’s divorce announcement post read, “After 4 years of being together, Hardik and I have decided to mutually part ways. We tried our best together and gave it our all, and we believe this is in the best interest for the both of us. This was a tough decision for us to make, given the joy, mutual respect and companionship we enjoyed together and as we grew a family.”
Despite a surge in arrests, India’s fight against illegal Bangladeshi infiltration is hitting a dead end literally at the border, Indian security and immigration authorities continue to face mounting challenges in deporting Bangladeshi nationals who enter the country unlawfully.
Deportation delay: Diplomatic hurdles stall repatriation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals in India | Representative Image
Despite a surge in arrests, India’s fight against illegal Bangladeshi infiltration is hitting a dead end literally at the border, Indian security and immigration authorities continue to face mounting challenges in deporting Bangladeshi nationals who enter the country unlawfully. Even after arrests and legal convictions, the repatriation process remains slow, uncertain, and fraught with diplomatic and procedural complications.
Highly placed sources in the Crime Branch, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that several hundred Bangladeshi nationals were arrested over the past year for illegal stay, use of forged Indian identity documents, and links to organised crime. Authorities have taken steps to limit their ability to stay and move freely within the country. Yet, once behind bars, their journey back home hits a diplomatic wall.
Officials admit that while arrests and case registrations have increased, deportation is far from straightforward. A major roadblock is the refusal of the host country Bangladesh to acknowledge and accept these individuals as its citizens. “Even after arrest and court convictions, deportation gets stuck at the verification stage. The Bangladeshi side often fails to confirm their nationality or outright denies their citizenship,” an officer said.
Officials revealed that most of these individuals entered India through porous border routes and secured fake Indian identity documents with the help of organized networks. In most of the cases, the permanent addresses used by these Bangladeshi nationals were found to be bogus.
A critical bottleneck for security agencies is the refusal of the host country to accept deportees. “Even after a Bangladeshi national is convicted in court, the deportation process is not straightforward. There have been cases where the host country Bangladesh has refused to acknowledge these individuals as their citizens, making repatriation nearly impossible,” the senior official said. This admission underscores a growing diplomatic and legal conundrum for Indian authorities, where the lack of documentation and non-cooperation from the Bangladeshi side often leads to indefinite detention or legal limbo for the detainees.
A senior official from the Bureau of Immigration noted that the primary hurdle in the deportation process is identity confirmation. “We cannot deport anyone unless the Bangladeshi government officially verifies their nationality. Without valid documents or cooperation, the process is paralyzed,” the official said. This challenge has led to prolonged detention of many individuals in correctional homes or holding centers, often for months or years. In some cases, courts order the release of detainees if their continued detention is deemed unjustifiable.
Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Yogesh Ramdas Kadam, recently presented detailed statistics in the state legislative assembly regarding the arrest and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals in the state.
According to the data, from January 2023 to March 2025, a total of 2,935 illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested across the state. However, only 587 of them have been deported back to Bangladesh. This means that approximately 20% of the arrested illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been deported, as per official records.
In Mumbai, between January and March, 197 cases were registered against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. These cases led to the arrest of over 369 illegal Bangladeshi nationals, but only 17 were deported after completing the lengthy formalities.

These operations have targeted various districts across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nanded, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and other districts.
Deportation of undocumented migrants requires coordination between multiple Indian agencies including the BSF, local police, immigration authorities, and the Ministry of External Affairs as well as active engagement from the Bangladeshi government. Officials admit that while mechanisms for deportation exist under the India-Bangladesh extradition treaty and bilateral dialogues, ground-level implementation is inconsistent. “We send dossiers for verification, but responses are slow and often inconclusive,” said another source familiar with the process.
Enforcement agencies stress the urgent need for enhanced bilateral cooperation and a reliable verification mechanism. “We need a faster and verifiable identification system and accountable cooperation from both sides,” said a senior immigration official. “Otherwise, the cycle of infiltration, arrest, and stalled deportation will continue.”

Samajwadi Party chief and MP Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday made a massive claim surrounding Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s political future, suggesting that the recent Mahakumbh mela was projected in a way to position him as a Prime Ministerial candidate. Raking up the Mahakumbh mela that was organised in Prayagraj this year at a grand scale, Akhilesh Yadav alleged that there were rumours to make it an event of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and to announce the UP CM as the next Prime Ministerial candiate.
Speaking to reporters, Akhilesh Yadav said, “They want to make every event a BJP event. It is being heard that during the Maha Kumbh, it was their plan to announce his (CM Yogi Adityanath) name as the Prime Minister’s face. They wanted to make this a political Kumbh. This was not a religious Kumbh. Have you ever seen so many announcements and interviews on Kumbh before? People should be able to see the truth.”

What the UP CM said amid PM Modi’s ‘retirement’ buzz
There has been growing conjecture surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s potential retirement after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that he will resign on September 17 this year when he turns 75. In a recent interview with PTI, Yogi Adityanath was asked about how a section of society wanted to see him as the Prime Minister of India one day and what he thought about it.
“Look, I am the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the party has put me here for the people of Uttar Pradesh, and politics is not a full-time job for me. At present, I am working here but in reality, I am a Yogi. As long as we are here, we are working. There will be a time limit to this too,” he had said in response.

An abandoned infant, about nine to 10 months old, was rescued from a dilapidated structure by Bollywood actress Disha Patani’s sister, Khushboo Patani here on Sunday morning, police said.
Khushboo Patani climbed over a wall to save the baby, they said.
The child was found near Disha’s Bareilly residence where Kushboo stays with her father, retired police circle officer Jagdish Patani. Her brave act is being widely appreciated in the city.
According to Circle Officer (City-I) Pankaj Srivastava, Khushboo was out for a morning walk when she heard the cries of the baby from an abandoned building nearby.
“There was no direct access to the structure, so she took the courageous step of climbing over a wall to reach the spot. Inside, she found an infant lying on the ground, crying and with visible injuries on the face,” Srivastava said.
She immediately brought infant home and administered first aid.
The family then informed the police about the incident. The child was later admitted to the district hospital, where treatment is ongoing, police said.
Police have begun checking CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify who abandoned the child.
The Instagram user allegedly referred to the recent shooting at Salman Khan’s house and threatened to attack Abhinav Shukla in a similar way.
Abhinav Shukla urged the police to take firm and prompt action against the death threat.
Television actor Abhinav Shukla has allegedly received death threat from a social media user claiming to be a part of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang.
The death threat reportedly comes after a verbal tiff between Shukla’s wife, actress Rubina Dilaik, and rapper Asim Riaz on the show “Battleground”, a news agency ANI report said. Soon after the episode aired, Shukla was allegedly targeted on social media, with the threat referring to the recent shooting incident at Salman Khan’s house.
Shukla shared a series of screenshots and videos on his X handle, wherein it was visible that the threat message was sent on Instagram by a user named Ankush Gupta.
“I’m from Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang. I know your address. Should I come over? Just like Salman Khan was shot at, I’ll come to your house and shoot you with an AK-47,” the threat message read in Hindi.
It further said, “Consider this your final warning. Say anything about Asim, and your name goes on the list. Lawrence Bishnoi stands with Asim.”
Shukla also posted a screen recording of the sender’s Instagram profile, mentioning that the person appeared to be from Chandigarh.
In his X post, the actor tagged Punjab and Chandigarh Police and said, “DEATH THREATS to my family! @DGPPunjabPolice @PunjabPoliceInd @DgpChdPolice @ChdPol. Person seems to be from Chandigarh/Mohali. Please act firmly & promptly. To anyone who recognises the person plz report @DGPPunjabPolice.”
The incident comes just a week after Salman Khan received fresh death threat. Reports said that the WhatsApp number of the Mumbai Traffic Police helpline received a threatening message, claiming that they would kill the actor after entering his house and blow up his car with a bomb.
Last year, shots were fired at Salman’s house, Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, by shooters associated with the Bishnoi gang. Following this, the actor’s security was also beefed up. This was the fifth time that the actor received a threat to his life in the last two years.
Officials pinned the chaos on Sunday on a combination of poor planning and months-long miscommunication, with one of the airport’s 4 runways shut for upgrades.

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport remained hobbled on Sunday, with roughly 68% of all arrivals and departures delayed, as the airport operator said airlines failed to heed warnings about disruptions issued four months ago and neglected to adjust their flight schedules.
Officials pinned the chaos on a combination of poor planning and months-long miscommunication, with one of the airport’s four runways shut for upgrades during the busy summer travel season, coupled with an untimely change in wind direction – a perfect storm of factors that slashed capacity and left passengers blind-sided.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the airport operator, said airlines were informed about the planned runway upgrade and potential wind disruption four months ago, but made “minimal or no changes”.
“The closure of Runway 10/28 since 8th April for essential Instrument Landing System (ILS) upgradation, was planned well in advance in consultation with all relevant stakeholders and based on historical wind patterns over 4 months ago…it was agreed amongst all stakeholders, including Airlines and ATC [air traffic control] that will be temporary capacity constraints for arrivals…,” DIAL said in a statement on X.
“During such moments the Airlines are to reschedule or cancel flights at short notice in interest of passenger safety and convenience… However, there were minimal to no changes made. Unfortunately this limited action/non action has led to significant operational challenges for all the stakeholders including Delhi airport and ATC and in the end impacted the passengers significantly,” it added.
DIAL said the airport, in coordination with stakeholders, had decided to temporarily suspend the upgrade work.
“Runway 10/28 will be brought back into operation in the first week of May, with the remaining upgrade activities deferred for a month or so,” it said.
Thousands of passengers were affected on Sunday as 501 departures and 384 arrivals were delayed, as of 11.30pm, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24. This is just over 68% of the 1,300-odd flights the airport handles a day.
The service also said departures were, on average, delayed by an hour and arrivals by 75 minutes.
The airport operates four runways; 27/09, 28/10 (both these runways are old), 29L/11R, and 29R/11L, with the newest runway becoming operational in 2023. On a typical day, the airport handles up to 46 arrivals per hour.
Meanwhile, Terminal 2 was closed on April 15 2025 with the 46,000 passengers and 270,280 flights it handled being shifted to expanded Terminal 1, which was completely operational on the same day, April 15.
These concurrent factors snowballed into a harrowing time for passengers, and the mayhem was thrown under the spotlight again when Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah early on Sunday morning criticised the airport for a lengthy delay.
“Delhi airport is a bloody shit show (excuse my French but I’m in no mood to be polite). 3 hours in the air after we left Jammu we get diverted to Jaipur & so here I am at 1 in the morning on the steps of the plane getting some fresh air. I’ve no idea what time we will leave from here,” he said on X.
Runway 28/10 was closed on April 8 to enhance its Instrument Landing System (ILS) to CAT III B standards – an upgrade that would help it better cope with fog in winter. The timelines were set out to ensure work was completed before winter this year.
In mid-December, key aviation stakeholders were in discussions to devise a plan to minimize weather-related disruptions, said officials aware of the matter. DIAL anticipated a reduction in runway capacity — and possible flight cancellations — because of the upgrade.
By January, DIAL formally informed stakeholders and stated that the runway work would not impact flight operations.
Further complicating the situation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) experienced a leadership change at the same time. DIAL first sought approvals from the civil aviation ministry in December 2024 and later from both the DGCA and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on January 15. These approvals were granted in February, said the people cited above.
A meeting on March 4 involving DIAL, AAI, the civil aviation ministry and airline representatives discussed DIAL’s mitigation plan to handle passenger operations during the closure and ILS upgrade. According to the meeting minutes reviewed by HT, all stakeholders were made aware of the shift in wind patterns and were advised to plan their operations accordingly.
In the meeting led by the AAI chairman Vipin Kumar, it was noted that when the airport operates with easterly winds in mind, the flight paths for runways 09 and 11R cross each other about 7.6 nautical miles west of the airport at a 12 degree angle. Because of this, the number of arriving flights are forced to be reduced to 32 per hour.
A former AAI official explained, “When Runway 11L is used for departures and 11R for arrivals, and runway 09 is also used only for departures, the flight paths are not fully separate. So, there must be a gap of 100 to 110 seconds between each arriving flight on Runway 11R, which limits the number of arrivals to about 32 per hour.”
Officials from AAI confirmed that airlines were informed about IMD’s forecast, which predicted an increase in easterly wind conditions. In March and April, around 30% of flights were expected to operate in easterly Mode, increasing to 50% by May and June. This seasonal shift, driven by pre-monsoon changes, was expected to further reduce runway capacity.
During westerly winds — when Runway 27 operates in mixed mode, Runway 29 is used for departures, and Runway 29L for arrivals — the combined capacity is 74 flights per hour. Under Easterly winds, with Runway 09 and 11L handling departures and Runway 11R managing arrivals, capacity is around 72. But with only one runway available for arrivals, the effective arrival capacity drops significantly.
Runway 28/10 had been reopened in February 2024 after being shut for re-carpeting in September 2023. It was closed again in April, right when summer flight traffic started increasing.
Relief may be on the way. A senior IMD official said the wind direction is expected to shift back to westerly in two days.
“Every time a western disturbance hits the western Himalayas, wind direction temporarily shifts to easterly. This is normal. As for how operations are affected, that’s for the airport authorities to determine,” the official said.
Some officials suggested that the upgrade work could have been phased. However, industry experts disagreed, saying the nature of the work—milling the runway surface and installing inset lights—required it to be completed in one go. They added that the March to June window was optimal, as it avoids fog in winter and heavy rains during the monsoon.
Airlines were also advised that delays and diversions during easterly mode were inevitable. They were encouraged to review and adjust their schedules every two weeks based on actual operating conditions and unscheduled flight movements to minimise cancellations.
“The airport operator shares its plans with stakeholders as per standard procedures. It’s the airlines who should have trimmed their operations to avoid disruption,” said Mohan Ranganathan, an aviation safety expert.
“A four-month closure of a major runway is a long time for a hub like Delhi. DGCA, as the regulator, should have revisited the summer schedule and possibly issued a revised one.”
Daughter of former Indian cricketer and ex-coach Sanjay Bangar, Anaya has made shocking revelations about her journey after she transformed from a male to a female.
Claiming that the world of cricket is very insecure and full of toxic masculinity, in an interview with Lallantop, Anaya shed light on the fact that she had to maintain secrecy when playing cricket while growing up. “I played with some well known cricketers now like Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Yashasvi Jaiswal. I had to maintain secrecy about myself because dad is a well-known figure.”
While she accepted that there has been support regarding her decision, there has also been harassment. She revealed that a few cricketers have been randomly sending her nude pictures of themselves, while some people have been asking her to send pictures of herself. “The person used to give gaalis in front of everybody. The same person then used to come and sit beside me and ask for my photos.
She recalled another incident where she confided about her situation to a veteran cricketer, and he replied, “Let’s go in your car, I want to sleep with you.”
Reflecting on her journey, she revealed in the interview that she knew at the age of 8-9 years old that she was in the wrong body. “I used to get clothes from my mother’s wardrobe and look in the mirror and say that I want to be a girl.”
The cricket career of Anaya, who was Aryan back in the day, started at the age of 12. However, transwomen have been banned from playing cricket as per the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules.
She also called for setting new margins to determine the eligibily of trans women in women’s sports.
Last year, Anaya shared a post on Instagram expressing her hurt over the ban on transgenders from competing in cricket.
“We need policies that don’t make us choose between our identity and our passions. Trans women deserve the right to compete, play, and thrive,” Anaya had said in her post last year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host a dinner for US Vice President J D Vance and Indian-origin Second Lady Usha on Monday evening, after holding talks with the American leader that are set to focus on trade, tariff and several other key issues, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.
The US vice president, his wife, Usha, and their three children — Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel — are scheduled to land at the Palam airbase in Delhi at 10 am on Monday on a four-day India visit.
The Vances will be welcomed on their arrival by a senior Union minister.
Besides Delhi, Vance and his family will travel to Jaipur and Agra.
Vance is expected to be accompanied by at least five senior officials, including from the Pentagon and the State Department, the people cited above said.
Hours after arriving in Delhi, Vance and his family are scheduled to visit the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple and could also go to a shopping complex selling traditional Indian handcrafted goods, they said.
At 6:30 pm on Monday, Modi will host Vance for talks that are expected to focus on an early finalisation of the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement as well as on ways to boost the overall trajectory of the ties between the two countries.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra are expected to be part of the Indian team to be led by Modi, the people said.
After the talks, the prime minister will host the Vances and the accompanying American officials for dinner.
The people cited above said Vance and his family will leave for Jaipur on Monday night.
In Delhi, the US vice president and his family are set to stay in the ITC Maurya Sheraton hotel.
On April 22, the Vances will visit a number of historical sites, including the Amer Fort, also known as the Amber Fort — a UNESCO world heritage site — the people said.
In the afternoon, the US vice president is scheduled to address a gathering at the Rajasthan International Centre in Jaipur, they added.
Vance is expected to delve into the broader aspects of the India-US relations under the Donald Trump administration during his speech that is expected to be attended by diplomats, foreign policy experts, Indian government officials and academia.
The US vice president and his family are expected to travel to Agra on the morning of April 23, the people cited above said.
In Agra, they will visit the Taj Mahal and Shilpgram, an open-air emporium showcasing various Indian artefacts, they said.
After concluding their trip to Agra, the Vances will return to Jaipur in the second half of April 23.

A self-described artist says they won an AI-generated image competition held at their office by entering a hand-drawn illustration. According to a social media post, the submission, a drawing of a cat, ended up winning the prize – a box of chocolates which they later forfeited – after “nobody noticed it wasn’t AI.”
The artwork shows the perspective of the artist overlooking a cat sitting on a laptop connected to a monitor. The tabby was revealed to be a real feline from a picture that seemingly inspired the drawing.
My workplace held an AI-generated image contest and I submitted an illustration I drew. Nobody noticed it wasn’t AI and I ended up winning. pic.twitter.com/M0jVfLiwUV
“For the record, I’m not completely against AI,” clarified the illustrator, who uses the name Michi on X. “I think it has massive potential in scientific research. We’ve already been using it here for protein structure and genomic analysis and it’s been a powerful tool.”
“However as an artist, I also feel that it’s important to remember that technology should be regarded as a tool to extend our own creativity and capabilities, not replace them.”
Michi said they’d have preferred for the competition to be a real art or photography contest, but suspected that it may not have been a competition at all, just an interactive activity to see whose submission got the most “smiles.”
The artist also clarified that after winning, they disclosed “the nature of the artwork” and that it was all in good fun.
“As for the prize, it was a box of chocolates that I decided to forfeit by sharing with the rest of the office (I can’t eat that much sweets anyway),” Michi added.
This isn’t the first time man has beaten machine in an AI contest.

The Bombay High Court has reserved its verdict on comedian Kunal Kamra’s plea seeking to quash an FIR lodged against him for allegedly playing the song “Mehangai Dayan” during a protest outside the residence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The protest was held in March 2024 in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill area, and Kamra participated in it to raise concerns about inflation and unemployment.
The FIR, filed at Malabar Hill police station, accused Kamra and others of unlawful assembly and use of loudspeakers without permission. The charges were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Police Act. Kamra filed a petition in the High Court challenging the FIR, calling it an attack on his right to free speech and expression.
Kamra’s lawyer argued that the protest was peaceful and the song played was part of symbolic dissent, not meant to incite hatred or violence. The advocate also highlighted that no law prohibits the playing of such songs during a protest, especially when it is conducted without disrupting public peace.
The state’s counsel, however, argued that the gathering lacked police permission and disturbed the quiet, posh residential area. After hearing both sides, the bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Deshpande reserved the order but extended interim protection to Kamra from arrest until the final verdict is pronounced.

India and France are likely to ink a deal for the sale of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft to the Indian Navy on April 28.
Senior officials from both sides will be present during the signing event, sources said.
According to sources, the event is also planned to be held outside the Defence Ministry headquarters in South Block. The French Minister is expected to arrive in India on Sunday for the same.
India cleared its largest-ever defence deal for 26 Rafale-Marine combat aircraft with France earlier this month on April 9 at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under a government-to-government deal.
This government-to-government contract will include 22 single-seater and four twin-seater jets, along with a comprehensive package for fleet maintenance, logistical support, personnel training, and indigenous component manufacturing. These fighters will be operational from INS Vikrant and will support the existing Mig-29 K fleet.

Eleven people were killed, eight of them from a family, after a four-storey unauthorised residential building collapsed in the Dayalpur village area in Mustafabad, northeast Delhi, in the early hours of Saturday, police officers said. The incident, they added, left 11 others with varying degrees of injuries.
The collapse happened around 2.30am in Gali no 3, locals said, where homes stand cheek by jowl. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) chief Atul Garg said the first distress call was received at 2.50am, after which nine fire tenders were rushed to the site, a 60-square-yard plot.
The announcement came after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday

Elon Musk, the man behind big brands like Tesla, SpaceX, X, and Starlink, has confirmed that he will visit India later this year. The announcement came after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
This visit has been long overdue, as it was planned almost a year ago but did not happen.
But there have been fast-paced developments ever since Donald Trump became the US President earlier this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to the United States and met Donald Trump, as well as Elon Musk, in a separate meeting this February.
Before this, the PM had met Musk in June 2022 when he invited the billionaire businessman to invest in India in electric mobility and India’s rapidly expanding commercial space sector.
The offer was on the table from Modi again this February — that Musk should invest in India in fields such as innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development.
And one soon heard about Tesla’s plans to set up shop in Delhi and Mumbai. India would be eager to learn if Musk plans a Tesla factory in Maharashtra too.
Tesla all charged up
Besides showrooms in Mumbai’s BKC Complex and Delhi’s Aerocity, Tesla is also planning to work on a massive charging site infrastructure for the electric vehicles it will sell in India, apart from facilities for battery cell material manufacturing. The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems.
India is one of the fastest-growing EV markets—a market Musk can’t ignore, India feels.
Over 1.5 million electric vehicles were sold in 2023. With government incentives and a huge tech workforce, India could be the next global hub for Musk’s ambitions. And with the tariffs issue resolving, hopefully with a trade deal between India and the US, Tesla could be the first entrant among Musk’s products into India.
Tesla is anticipated to face a lot of hurdles with China due to the ongoing tariff war. Hence, India is being seen as a good option.
Many are hoping for cheaper Teslas in a competitive market like India.
Starlink to log in
The second big offering from Musk for India could be the Starlink satellite internet going mainstream. This could mean fast internet connectivity for Indians.
Just last week, before Musk’s phone call with the PM, Starlink’s top officials were in Delhi meeting commerce minister Piyush Goyal as well as officials from the telecom ministry. What the company wants is a licence to start satellite communication services in India, but the nation’s security establishment has been raising some issues.
What India desires, as per the country’s latest rules, is for companies like Starlink to set up a command centre here so that communication services can be suspended in a particular area that is sensitive or troubled. This is a national security demand.
Then, there is the need for interception. But Starlink’s top brass coming to India shows Elon Musk’s company is eager to tide over the regulatory issues and make an entry into the massive Indian market, sources say.
The minister, Piyush Goyal, himself said that the discussions with Starlink have covered areas like the company’s cutting-edge technology platform, their existing partnerships, and future investment plans in India.
Musk’s company SpaceX has already signed agreements with Reliance Jio and Airtel for bringing fast internet connectivity to India.
So, the process of Starlink’s impending entry into India seems to be in the last lap.

Scammers are always looking for ingenious ways to carry out their misdeeds, and one such incident happened with a certain Pradeep Jain, who lost more than Rs 2 lakh soon after downloading an image sent to him over WhatsApp, as per a report by Indian Express.
One fine morning the 28-year-old received a call from an unknown number, which also sent him said image a few moments later.
The image was of an elderly man with “Do you know this person?” written on it.
Jain ignored the calls at first, but after the scammers kept incessantly dialling him, he finally gave in and dowloaded the picture. Within minutes, his bank account was left short of Rs 2.01 lakh.
The money was debited from a Hyderabad ATM. When Canara Bank, where Jain had his account, tried to verify the transaction via a phone call, the scammers mimicked his voice and got away with it.
The technology used in this case is called Least Significant Bit (LSB) steganography. With this technology, one can hide data on media files like audio or images by modifying the bits of data units that are the most insignificant.
“The word ‘steganography’ has Greek origins. It means ‘hidden writing’. In cybercrime, this technique is exploited to embed malware or secret instructions inside harmless-looking media files. These hidden payloads often evade traditional detection systems and are triggered only by specific scripts,” an expert told the publication.
“This isn’t a new concept. In 2017, hackers embedded harmful executable code inside GIF files shared on WhatsApp. When downloaded, the hidden code ran in the background, bypassing security settings and accessing the user’s data. Though the vulnerability was patched, this technique made a comeback in 2019 with more refined methods and broader targets.” another said.
Traditional antivirus tools are not enough to detect steganography, which needs forensic tools, behavioural analytics and steganalysis platforms in order to spot file structure anomalies.
Pakistan’s naval drill with Sri Lanka near Trincomalee was scrapped after India raised concerns, amid a fresh India-Sri Lanka defense pact.
The joint exercise was planned in the weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka this month, when New Delhi and Colombo signed a defence cooperation agreement (File)(PIB India/X)
Pakistan’s effort to conduct a joint naval exercise this year with Sri Lanka in the waters off Trincomalee, a port city where an energy hub is being developed with Indian involvement, was shut down after New Delhi conveyed its concerns to Colombo, people familiar with the matter said.
The joint exercise was planned in the weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka this month, when New Delhi and Colombo signed a defence cooperation agreement, the first of its kind, and another tripartite agreement involving the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the energy hub at Trincomalee, including a multi-product pipeline.
The move by Pakistan, especially the proposal that the exercise be conducted in the waters around Trincomalee, was seen as a deliberate attempt to needle India, the people said on condition of anonymity. It came after Sri Lanka last year imposed a one-year moratorium on visits by foreign research vessels, a measure put in place by Colombo largely because of the activities of surveillance vessels from China, Pakistan’s long-standing ally.
Once the Indian side learnt of the planned joint naval exercise, it was taken up with Sri Lankan authorities by the Indian high commission in Colombo, which strongly conveyed New Delhi’s concerns about such activities in a region where the Indian side has important stakes, the people said.
The joint exercise was quietly scrapped by Sri Lankan authorities despite protests from the Pakistani side, the people said.
There was no word on the development from Indian officials. The officials cited above did not elaborate on the scale of the planned exercise, nor the exact dates.
In February and early March, a Pakistan Navy frigate, PNS Aslat, visited Colombo port. In the March visit, it conducted a “passex”, or passing exercise, with a Sri Lanka Navy warship in the waters off the capital before departing from Sri Lankan waters. This passex focused on communication and tactical maneuvering, according to a readout from the Sri Lankan Navy.
The Indian government has traditionally bristled at port visits to Sri Lanka by Chinese or Pakistani warships. Port visits by Chinese vessels have been more frequent, especially since Beijing controls Hambantota port under a 99-year lease.
In recent years, India has been increasingly concerned by visits to Sri Lanka by sophisticated Chinese surveillance vessels that are capable of monitoring coastal defences and tracking satellite and missile launches. The moratorium imposed by Sri Lanka on visits by such vessels last December, and the people said the Sri Lankan side is yet to take a call on dealing with visits by such vessels.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation signed by New Delhi and Colombo on April 5, during Modi’s visit for talks with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, marked the first refresh of ties in this important sector since India’s troubled intervention in Sri Lanka’s civil war in the late 1980s, and came at a time when India has been concerned about China’s increasing presence in its strategic backyard.
The MoU will make existing initiatives for defence cooperation more structured and lead to more joint exercises and potential defence industry collaboration.
The tripartite MoU involving India, Sri Lanka and the UAE, signed the same day, will focus on developing an energy hub at Trincomalee, including a multi-product pipeline and further development of a World War 2 oil tank farm partly held by the Sri Lankan subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation.
In 2022, the Sri Lankan government, Lanka IOC, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and a joint venture between the two oil firms signed lease agreements for refurbishing and developing the 850-acre oil storage facility in Trincomalee, a strategic natural harbour on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast.

In a major development in the decades-old Naga conflict, NSCN-IM, is poised for a new split from Ikato Swu who has decided to join Naga rebel leaders based out in Myanmar to “carry forward the Naga struggle.”
Ikato is a senior leader and son of its founder Isak Chishi Swu who was part of the biggest Naga insurgent group which has been maintaining ceasefire since 1997.
In a strongly worded statement, Ikato blamed the present leadership of NSCN-IM for failing the Naga cause as the reason for his departure from the group. He also announced his decision to join Absalom Raman and HS Ramsan, two Naga rebel leaders based out in Myanmar, who remained out of the peace process in India.
Ikato also stated that the Centre ‘betrayed’ the Nagas by not implementing the Framework Agreement, which was signed in 2015 just before the demise of his father Isak Chishi Swu. The NSCN-IM was founded by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah. Swu died in 2016 while Muivah is now the group’s general secretary, whom they call “Ato Kilonser” (Prime Minister.)
Setback to peace process?
Ikato’s departure is seen as a setback to the ongoing peace process between the Centre and NSCN-IM, which began following a ceasefire in 1997.
The Framework Agreement signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2015 was to be the basis for signing a final agreement to end the 76-year-old Naga conflict.
But the government said the final agreement has not yet been possible mainly due to NSCN-IM’s insistence on recognition of Naga flag and the Constitution.
The GPS-enabled tankers are part of a broader strategy to modernize the city’s water distribution. (File)
Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Friday said the Delhi government will deploy 1,000 GPS-enabled water tankers across the capital to boost supply in view of the summer season.
The minister said the tankers will be flagged off to their destinations from Nirankari Ground in Burari on Sunday.
This initiative aims to ensure timely and transparent delivery of water to areas where piped supply is unavailable or unreliable, he added.
Parvesh Verma said the Delhi government is “working with complete dedication” to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘s “vision of water for all on time”.
“This initiative is not just about delivering water. It’s about bringing transparency, accountability and dignity to every citizen, who depends on us for this essential service,” he added.
The tankers will be dispatched from Nirankari Ground in Burari and will be monitored in real-time through a newly established Command Center.
“The state-of-the-art facility will track each tanker’s movement, delivery times and speed, allowing authorities to ensure that water reaches the intended destinations efficiently,” said a government statement.
The GPS-enabled tankers are part of a broader strategy by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to modernize the city’s water distribution infrastructure.
In addition to improving supply, the plan includes strict monitoring of water theft, misuse and uneven distribution.
A 17-year-old boy’s murder in Delhi sparked protests, leading to police action and political blame over the city’s law and order situation.

The daytime murder of a 17-year-old boy in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur on Thursday snowballed into a late night protest by the teen’s family and neighbours, leading to the deployment of security forces in the area and interventions by the state’s top political leaders.
Police said Kunal (who went by one name) was killed in a revenge attack, alluding to an earlier altercation between an associate of his and one of the suspects, as they arrested a woman who allegedly led the gang of boys behind the murder.
The victim’s mother said he was waylaid and stabbed multiple times by the accused in the J-block market of the locality, around 50m from their home, at around 6pm. “My husband ran towards the street where Kunal was being stabbed, but by the time he reached, the attackers were fleeing. He [her husband] saw four-five boys and a woman running,” Parveen Devi, 45, said.
Senior AAP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi assembly Atishi blamed the BJP governments at the Centre and in the Capital.
“The murder of a 17-year-old youth in Seelampur is another example of the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. What is Delhi Police doing? What is Home Minister Amit Shah doing? What is the double-engine government doing?” she posted on X.
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta said the authorities will ensure that the family of the victim gets justice. “I have talked to the Commissioner of Police. The police are making all efforts, and I hope the accused will be arrested soon,” she said.
Police initially rounded up at least four people, including a woman identified as 25-year-old Zikra Khan, who goes by the moniker “Lady Don” on social media.
Later in the evening, police officially arrested Khan. “During questioning, she confessed she was involved in the murder. She said that the reason was revenge over an attack on her cousin in November by Kunal’s associate Laala,” additional deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Sandeep Lamba said. Two boys were seen attacking Kunal in CCTV footage, police said, adding that they were on the run.
Police said she was arrested in March for brandishing a weapon in a social media post.
The teen’s family said he was receiving threats from the accused over the attack on Khan’s cousin but maintained that Kunal was not involved in the incident. Police officers said that they did not receive any complaints about the alleged threats.
As the outrage over the killing mounted on Friday, local residents took to the street in protest and blocked traffic with members of right-wing outfits also joining the demonstration. As tension gripped the locality, authorities increased deployment and posted two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) in the area. “There is fear, and we want our kids to go away from here,” said one of the protesters on condition of anonymity.
BJP MP from northeast Delhi Manoj Tiwari said the people’s anger was justified but urged the local residents to maintain peace. “Anger among people is natural, but people of the area should maintain restraint. Efforts should be made to ensure that police action is not hindered,” he said.
Shubhanshu Shukla, who has spent the last eight months training with NASA and Axiom Space, will fly to the International Space Station on a privately funded commercial mission.

Marking a significant milestone in India’s space journey, the Centre has announced that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a Gaganyatri or astronaut-designate, is scheduled to fly to the International Space Station next month.
Union Minister for Space and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh said, “The International space mission carrying an Indian astronaut is scheduled for next month. India is poised to script a defining chapter in its space journey. An Indian astronaut is set for a historic space mission as ISRO charts bold new frontiers. India’s space dreams are soaring higher with Gaganyaan preparations, ISS mission, and a summer of launches.”
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who has spent the last eight months training with NASA and Axiom Space, will fly to the International Space Station on a privately funded commercial mission. India has reportedly paid over $60 million for the mission, which will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying a four-person crew, lifting off from Florida’s Kennedy Space Centre.
Who is Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla?
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is 40 years old, the youngest of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) astronauts. The space centre has chosen Shukla for this mission as he has a long career ahead of him.
The commander of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission will be former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who now works for Axiom Space. The other two crew members are Slawosz Uznanski from Poland, who is a European Space Agency astronaut and will be a mission specialist, and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu, who will also have the same role. Group Captain Shukla will be the mission’s pilot.
Significance of Axiom-4 Mission
Union Minister Singh said the mission will make Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station and the first Indian in space in over four decades, following Rakesh Sharma’s historic 1984 flight on a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
Dr V Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO, said that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force is prepared for the mission.
Group Captain Shukla’s mission represents a confident and forward-thinking India, poised to reclaim its position in the global space race. His journey is more than just a flight – it’s a signal that India is stepping boldly into a new era of space exploration.
A decorated test pilot with the Indian Air Force, Group Captain Shukla was selected for ISRO’s Human Spaceflight Program. He’s a top contender for India’s Gaganyaan mission, India’s first indigenous crewed orbital flight. His journey aboard the Ax-4 mission is expected to provide critical hands-on experience in spaceflight operations, launch protocols, microgravity adaptation, and emergency preparedness – all essential for India’s crewed space ambitions.
Group Captain Shukla’s mission is strategically significant as it focuses on operational readiness and global integration, marking a shift from earlier symbolic endeavours. It highlights India’s growing involvement in international public-private partnerships in space and its resolve to emerge as a serious contender in human space exploration.
Underscoring the significance of the upcoming human spaceflight and a series of critical ISRO missions, Singh said, “India is ready for its next space milestone.” He noted that the collaboration with international partners and the strategic momentum of projects like Gaganyaan reflect India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in space technology. The minister emphasised that these efforts are not only scientific but also aligned with the vision of a developed and self-reliant India.
ISRO is set to launch the PSLV-C61 mission, carrying the EOS-09 satellite, which features a C-band synthetic aperture radar for high-resolution Earth imaging, under all weather conditions, day or night.
The ED has recorded the statement of Robert Vadra for three consecutive days in the 2008 Haryana land deal-linked money laundering case in April.

The Enforcement Directorate will soon file a chargesheet against Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, for his alleged involvement in suspected land deals which the probe agency believes are part of “proceeds of crime”.
Among the major cases which ED is investigating and in which Robert Vadra’s statement has been recorded are –
Beneficial Ownership of London Properties
The ED investigations started in 2018. The agency claims Robert Vadra’s close aide, London-based businessman Sanjay Bhandari, got commission in business deals which was used to purchase plush homes in London. Robert Vadra was quizzed several times in 2018 and last questioned in 2019. India has so far not been successful in the extradition of Bhandari.
Faridabad Land Deal Case
In a supplementary chargesheet filed against Sanjay Bhandari, ED, without naming Robert Vadra and Priyanka Vadra, had mentioned the sale and purchase of a land deal in Faridabad. This was based on a statement given by CC Thampi, who was earlier arrested by ED.
CC Thampi purchased approximately 486 acres of land from 2005–2008 in village Amipur in Haryana’s Faridabad district through HL Pahwa, a Delhi NCR-based real estate agent.
It is imperative to mention that Robert Vadra also purchased 40.08 acres in Amipur from HL Pahwa from 2005–2006 and sold the same land to Pahwa in December 2010. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also purchased agricultural land measuring five acres in village Amipur from Pahwa in April 2006 and sold the same land to Pahwa in February 2010. Pahwa was receiving cash out of the books for the purpose of acquisition of land. It was also noticed that Robert Vadra did not pay the entire sale consideration to Pahwa, the ED had said in its chargesheet filed in November 2023.
Shekopura (Gurugram) Land Deal Case
His two companies had Rs 1 lakh in their accounts when they purchased 3.53 acres of land worth Rs 7.5 crore in 2008, according to ED sources.
After purchasing the land from Onkareshar Properties, Vadra’s firm wrote to the Haryana government stating that it wanted to use the land for commercial purposes, and approval was granted within four days.
Sky Light Hospitality Private Limited purchased the 3.53-acre land from Onkareshar Properties on 12 February 2008 for Rs 7.50 crore without making any payments.
Himachal Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena’s Holi party at a Shimla hotel has sparked a row, with Rs 1,000-per-plate meals for officers and Rs 600 for drivers, resulting in a Rs 1.22 lakh bill. The use of public funds for the event is under review.
Himachal Chief Secretary’s Rs 1.2 Lakh Holi Bash Has Raised Eyebrows
A Holi party hosted by Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Secretary, featuring lunch at Rs 1,000 per plate for IAS officers and their families, Rs 600 per plate for drivers, and additional taxi fares, has sparked controversy. The event, which included meals for 22 drivers, resulted in a bill of Rs 1.22 lakh, now under scrutiny as the General Administration Department (GAD) reviews whether public funds should cover the expenses.
Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, who received a six-month extension after his scheduled retirement on March 31, hosted a lavish Holi celebration at Holiday Home, the flagship hotel of Himachal Tourism in Shimla.
The bill, forwarded by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC), details charges of Rs 1,000 per plate for officers and their families, Rs 585 per plate for drivers, Rs 11,800 in taxi fares, and Rs 22,350 in taxes.
Former Industries Minister Bikram Thakur has criticised Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena for hosting a lavish Holi party for IAS officers and their families in Himachal Pradesh.
Key Points of Criticism
– Misuse of Government Funds: Thakur questioned the justification of using government funds to pay for the party expenses, especially when the state is facing a financial crisis.
– Prioritising Extravagance Over Necessity: He criticised the bureaucracy’s priorities, suggesting that the focus should be on addressing the state’s financial woes rather than indulging in lavish parties.
– Inconsiderate Timing: Thakur pointed out the insensitivity of holding such an extravagant event during a time when the state is grappling with significant debt.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways confirmed that the FASTag system for collecting tolls will remain operational beyond May 1. Additionally, there are no plans to close toll plazas nationwide. Instead, a pilot program for a barrier-less tolling system is being tested at select sites, integrating Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with FASTag.
Since 2021, FASTag has been mandatory for paying toll fees on National Highways. (File Image/ PTI)
The current FASTag system to collect toll taxes will continue even after May 1, clarified the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The clarification comes after several reports surfaced suggesting that a satellite-based tolling system would be rolled out nationwide from 1 May 2025 that would replace the FASTag-based system.
No Toll Plaza Shutdown, ANPR-FASTag System Being Piloted at Select Locations
The government has further clarified that no decision has been made to shut down toll plazas across the country. Instead, MoRTH announced the pilot launch of a barrier-less tolling system at select locations, aiming to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion at toll booths. This upcoming system will use a hybrid model, integrating Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with the existing FASTag infrastructure.
Under this setup, vehicles will be charged automatically as high-performance ANPR cameras read license plates, while FASTag RFID readers confirm payment, eliminating the need for stopping at toll booths.
The ministry also warned that violations will be penalised. E-notices will be sent to defaulters, and repeated non-compliance may result in FASTag suspension and other penalties under the VAHAN database.
Zikra worked as a bouncer for jailed gangster Hashim Baba’s wife, Zoya, before her arrest by Delhi Police in a drugs case

The Delhi Police is investigating the role of a woman referred to as a “lady don” in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old boy in north-east Delhi’s Seelampur area. The woman, a former bouncer, has been detained for questioning.
The victim, Kunal, was stabbed to death on Thursday in New Seelampur. Police have identified two suspects — Sahil and Rehan — after reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
According to the police, the “lady don” angle emerged after Kunal’s family alleged that the woman, identified as Zikra — a local figure known by that nickname — was present at the crime scene when Kunal was attacked.
Kunal’s family also claimed that the murder may have been an act of revenge. They said that some time ago, members of Kunal’s community allegedly attacked Zikra’s cousin, Sahil, leading to an attempted murder case being filed by the police.
“It is suspected that Kunal was also involved in the stabbing of Sahil. Although Sahil did not die, he, along with Zikra, hatched a plan to take revenge for the attack,” a family source said.
Although Zikra has not been formally arrested, she is currently being questioned by the police.
Police sources said that Zikra once worked as a bouncer for Zoya, the wife of jailed gangster Hashim Baba. Before Zoya’s arrest in a drugs case, Zikra reportedly lived with her. Since then, it is believed that Zikra has been trying to form her own gang.
Parveen, Kunal’s mother, told PTI, “Zikra used to roam around in the area with a pistol. An incident happened with her cousin Sahil but my son was not involved in it. Yet they killed him. They brutally stabbed him multiple times.”
Zikra had previously been arrested under the Arms Act after posting a video of herself holding a pistol on social media. She was later released on bail and was living in a rented house near Kunal’s home. She is reportedly leading a gang of 10–12 young men, some of whom are now being linked to Kunal’s murder.
Urvashi Rautela in an interview on Friday claimed that she had a temple to her name near Badrinath Dham(Photo: Instagram/urvashirautela)
Actress Urvashi Rautela has triggered backlash from priests and locals in Badrinath after claiming that a famous temple in Uttarakhand was dedicated to her, reported India Today.
During an interview with host Siddharth Kannan, the actress claimed that the Urvashi Temple, located in Bamni near Badrinath Dham, attracted devotees who worshipped her and garlanded pictures of her, referring to her as ‘Damdamamai.’
However, priests and locals, who consider the temple sacred, were not pleased with the actress’s bold statement, with several calling for the government to take action against her for hurting religious sentiments.
Local priest Bhuwan Chandra Uniyal, a former religious officer of Badrinath Dham, told India Today that Rautela’s claims were misleading and criticised her for claiming ownership of the temple, which is deeply connected to the spiritual practices of the residents of Bamni and Pandukeshwar villages.
The Urvashi Temple is associated with a figure in Hindu mythology, Goddess Sati, who is highly revered and considered one of the 108 Shaktipeeths. According to legend, the temple emerged at the site where Goddess Sati’s body fell.
Uniyal called for action against Rautela and said, as quoted by India Today, “It is not her temple. Such statements are unacceptable, and the government should take strict steps against anyone making such claims.”
Amit Sati, President of the Brahma Kapal Teerth Purohit Society, also criticised Rautela’s remarks, stating that the temple was ancient and could not belong to any individual. He further mentioned that such remarks were disrespectful to people’s religious sentiments.
Villagers oppose Rautela’s remarks
Urvashi Rautela’s remarks angered several villagers from Bamni and Pandukeshwar as well.
Local resident Ramnarayan Bhandari told India Today that no individuals had the right to make claims about a sacred place which held mythological and cultural significance for the people in the region.
He added that the whole community condemned Rautela’s comment.
Rautela however, had doubled down on her comments, during her interview, and said that she also wanted a temple in her name in south India as she had worked in many films there.
She said, “Yes, because I have worked in the South, so it (temple) should be there.”

Observing that some field officers are seeking various “unwarranted documents” by raising “presumptive queries”, the CBIC gave an “indicative list” of the documents which officers can seek online from businesses.
Businesses will be able to get GST registration within 7 days, while applications flagged as risky will be processed within 30 days after physical verification of the premises.
Observing that some field officers are seeking various “unwarranted documents” by raising “presumptive queries”, the CBIC gave an “indicative list” of the documents which officers can seek online from businesses.
“While processing registration application, query should not be raised by the officer seeking original physical copy of these documents,” said the CBIC’s revised instruction for granting GST registration.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said it has received complaints regarding difficulties being faced in getting a GST registration, mainly on account of nature of clarifications being sought by the officers and seeking of additional documents, which are not prescribed by the Board.
With regard to documents in respect of Principal Place of Business (PPOB), the applicant has to upload any one of the documents — latest Property Tax receipt or Municipal Khata copy or copy of Electricity Bill of the owner, or any similar state-government document like water bill, which clearly establishes the ownership of the premises.
In cases where premises are rented, the applicant is required to upload the valid Rent/Lease agreement along with any one of the documents relating to PPOB.
With regard to documents related to ‘constitution of business’, the CBIC said where the applicant is one of the partners, Partnership Deed for the proof of constitution of business is required to be uploaded by the applicant.
No additional document like Udhyam certificate, MSME certificate, shop establishment certificate, trade license etc. should be sought from the applicant, it added.
The CBIC said some of the common queries that are being raised by the field officers currently and are causing hardship for taxpayers include residential address of the applicant/Managing Director/Authorized Signatory is not in the same city or the state where the registration has been sought; activities mentioned in the registration application can not be conducted from the particular premises etc.
“Officers handling registration applications should not ask any presumptive query which is not related to the documents or information submitted by the applicant,” the CBIC said.
The CBIC also asked the field officers to carefully examine and check completeness of the registration application, and cross verify the authenticity of the documents furnished as proof of address from the publicly available sources, such as websites of the concerned authorities such as land registry, electricity distribution companies, municipalities, and local bodies, etc.
“Where applications have not been flagged as risky on the common portal based on data analysis and risk parameters, and the same are found to be complete and without any deficiency, the officers should approve the application within 07 working days of submission of application,” it said.
Registration shall be granted within 30 days of submission of application after physical verification of the place of business in case where the applicant has undergone authentication of Aadhaar number and is flagged as risky on the common portal based on the data analysis and risk parameters; or fails to undergo authentication of Aadhaar number; or the officer deems it fit to carry out physical verification of place of business.
AMRG & Associates Senior Partner Rajat Mohan said this instruction eliminates discretionary practices, reduce registration delays, eliminate avoidable rejections, and ensure fair treatment of applicants-particularly for businesses operating from shared or rented premises, startups, and proprietorships.

Families of several accused in the alleged gang-rape of a woman in Varanasi have claimed there are inconsistencies in the survivor’s account and have informed the police on Thursday. In response, a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)-rank officer, has been formed to investigate the case and look into both sets of allegations.
According to the woman’s complaint, she was sexually assaulted by 23 men at various locations between 29 March and 4 April. Based on this, police began searching for the accused and have arrested 14 people so far.
However, after families of several accused raised doubts about her claims, Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal said the arrest of the remaining suspects has been paused till the SIT completes its investigation.
The Varanasi police chief stated that the SIT will submit a comprehensive report within 30 days. “No one — the survivor, or the accused — will face injustice,” he added.
Accused’s families memorandum
In a memorandum submitted to police, some of the accused’s families alleged that the woman had demanded money in exchange for removing certain names from her complaint. They also questioned why she did not seek help during the alleged assault and continued to post videos and photos on social media, where she appeared to be “laughing and roaming around”.
The accused’s families further pointed out that although the survivor initially named 23 men, she only identified nine during her court testimony, suggesting possible coercion or manipulation.
Investigators have said that CCTV footage purportedly shows the girl riding a bike during the time period mentioned in her gang-rape complaint.
Agarwal also confirmed that when police first found the woman, she neither mentioned rape nor asked to return home. “Only after a lengthy conversation with the officers did she agree to go back to her family,” he said.

India on Thursday said Jammu and Kashmir is a union territory of India and its only relation with Pakistan is vacation of illegally occupied territory by that country, in a strong reaction to the Pakistan army chief General Asim Munir’s statement that Kashmir is Islamabad’s “jugular vein”.
Reacting to this, the ministry of external affairs said: “How can anything foreign be in a jugular vein? This is a union territory of India. Its only relationship with Pakistan is the vacation of illegally occupied territories by that country
At the Overseas Pakistanis Convention in Islamabad earlier, Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir said: “Our stance is absolutely clear, it was our jugular vein, it will be our jugular vein, we will not forget it. We will not leave our Kashmiri brothers in their heroic struggle.”
Gen Munir also pushed the two-nation theory as he stressed that India and Pakistan are two different nations and Pakistanis are different from Hindus in terms of their culture, ideologies, and more. “Our forefathers thought we are different from Hindus in every possible aspect of life. Our religions are different, our customs are different, our traditions are different, our thoughts are different, our ambitions are different. That was the foundation of the two-nation theory that was laid there. We are two nations, we are not one nation,” he said.

A court in Jalandhar sent the jawan, Sukhcharan Singh, to five-day police remand, police officials said.
The main accused, Hardik Kamboj, hurled the hand grenade at the house of YouTuber Rozer Sandhu on the intervening night of March 15 and 16. However, the grenade did not explode.
