A voicemail claiming to be from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is doing the rounds on social media, warning recipients that their bank accounts will be blocked due to alleged fraudulent activity on their credit cards. The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) fact-checking unit issued an alert on social media, urging the public not to fall for the “hoax”. It said that such calls are not from the RBI or any official government agency.
“Beware! This is a scam,” the PIB Fact Check team posted on Friday, along with a reminder to verify suspicious messages, photos, or videos related to the central government.

The public has been advised to report any such suspicious content to PIB’s fact-checking team for verification, the government said. It also warned against sharing personal banking information over the phone and reminded citizens to remain cautious of unsolicited calls or messages related to financial matters.

Earlier, the RBI had announced new regulations to combat rising financial fraud carried out through voice calls and SMS, directing all regulated entities to implement safeguards by March 31.

Entities must monitor accounts linked to revoked numbers to prevent misuse for cyber fraud or as money mule accounts, the RBI had said. Moreover, institutions are required to align with TRAI’s communication rules, using approved number series, ‘1600xx’ for transactional calls and ‘140xx’ for promotional ones, to help customers distinguish between genuine and unsolicited messages.
