5 Stampedes That Claimed Over 190 Lives in Less Than a Year — From Hathras to Bengaluru

Chaotic celebrations turned into a full-blown tragedy in Bengaluru on Wednesday as 11 people, mostly youngsters, were killed in a stampede that broke out outside the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium. with over 190 lives lost at religious gatherings, public events, and even railway stations.
Let’s take a look at the other major stampedes that have taken place in the country in the past year:
Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede – Eleven people were killed and 33 others were injured after a stampede broke out outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where cricket fans had gathered to celebrate the maiden IPL victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. CM Siddaramaiah has announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

New Delhi Railway Station Stampede – On February 15, a stampede broke out at New Delhi Railway Station’s platforms 14 and 15. Eighteen people were killed and 15 injured, mostly pilgrims visiting Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.

Kumbh Stampede – During the Maha Kumbh, a stampede on January 29 at the Sangam area as millions as pilgrims were jostling for space to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya resulted in the death of 30 people and injuries to 60.
Goa and Tirupati Stampede – In January this year, six people were killed and dozens more were injured at a stampede at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala Hills. The stampede broke out as hundreds of devotees jostled for tickets for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam. Later in May, at least six people died at a stampede at the annual festival of Sri Lairai Devi temple in Goa.
