‘Stripped Off Warm Wear, Not Allowed To Use Restroom’: Influencer Shruti Chaturvedi Claims Harassment At Alaska Airport Over Powerbank

Shruti Chaturvedi | @adhicutting

Influencer Shruti Chaturvedi, who runs the public relations firm Chaipani, has shared her harrowing experience at Anchorage airport in Alaska, USA, where she was reportedly detained for eight hours after security personnel deemed her power bank “suspicious.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Chaturvedi detailed the ordeal: “Imagine being detained by Police and FBI for 8 hours, being questioned the most ridiculous things, physically checked by a male officer on camera, stripped off warm wear, mobile phone, wallet, kept in chilled room, not allowed to use a restroom, or make a single phone call, made to miss your flight – all because the airport security found your powerbank in handbag ‘suspicious.'”

She added, “I don’t have to imagine, already past the worst 7 hours. And we all know why.”

In her social media post, Chaturvedi tagged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the Ministry of External Affairs, apparently seeking intervention or assistance regarding her situation.

American Nightmare Unfolds: Why 300000 Indians In US Are ‘In a State Of Panic’

According to Open Doors 2024 report, over 300,000 Indian students were enrolled for higher education in the US during the 2023-24 academic year with close to a third of them eligible for OPT.

In what appears to be bad news for Indian students in the US, those enrolled as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students are facing the threat of leaving the country once they complete their studies. The threat is based on a new bill that was introduced in Congress recently to end Optional Practical Training (OPT) work authorisation.
Notably, the bill was introduced amid several anti-immigrant moves, which also included mass deportations by the Trump administration.
The bill has caused considerable anxiety among current F-1 and M-1 visa holders in the US. Many are actively seeking employment that will help them get hold of H-1B visas, typically sponsored by major US and Indian tech firms. This urgency is underscored by the Open Doors 2024 report, which indicates that over 300,000 Indian students were enrolled for higher education in the US during the 2023-24 academic year with close to a third of them eligible for OPT.

According to Poorvi Chothani of LawQuest, a Florida-based immigration law firm, “OPT allows students to find jobs in the US for one year after they graduate and may be extended for another two years provided you are a STEM graduate and are working with a qualified US employer.”

“If the bill goes through, OPT could end abruptly without an option to transition to another work visa. Students may have to leave the US immediately,” Chothani told ET.
At present, non-STEM graduates are mandated to leave the country a year after completing their studies.
Individuals holding OPT visas should either expedite their H-1B visa application if their lottery entry is successful or seek employment opportunities abroad. Additionally, international students should anticipate post-graduation departure requirements similar to those in the United Kingdom.

Pamban Bridge inauguration highlights: PM Modi inaugurates new rail bridge in Rameswaram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly constructed Pamban bridge on April 6, 2025. It will replace a 110-year-old structure that once connected Rameswaram to the Indian mainland.

The idea of linking India and Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, through the Adam’s Bridge route was first explored in 1876. However, the plan was shelved due to high costs. Eventually, a more feasible plan was approved in 1906: a railway line from Madurai to Dhanushkodi via Rameswaram, and a steamer service from Dhanushkodi to Sri Lanka.

The Pamban bridge, India’s first sea bridge, was an engineering marvel of its time. Standing 12.5 meters above sea level, it stretched across 145 piers and featured a double-leaf bascule span—a Scherzer rolling lift bridge—that opened for ships to pass through.

Rahul Gandhi To Launch ‘White T-shirt Movement’ In Bihar, Seeks Youth Participation

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Bihar comes days after Congress declared new district presidents in the state.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday made a fervent appeal to the youth of Bihar to participate in the White T-Shirt movement, beginning Monday, in huge numbers to send across a strong message that people of the state won’t get swayed away anymore and they are ready to write their own destiny.

The Leader of Opposition issued a video appeal on his social media account, seeking success of the White T-shirt movement in Bihar, ahead of his visit to Bihar’s Begusarai district on April 7.

“The Stop Migration, Give Jobs Yatra will give the world a glimpse of your struggle, suffering and also the sentiments of Bihar’s youth,” he said in the video message and urged them to ‘show their strength’.

“This message is for every resident of Bihar. I will visit Begusarai on April 7. I will walk shoulder to shoulder with you and raise your voice on issues of inflation, unemployment, privatisation, paper leaks and all other issues that adversely affect you and your families,” he said in the video.

The purpose of the ‘Palayan Yatra’ is to mobilise the energy of youth to build a new Bihar and make it a land of fresh opportunities.

“Bihar youth won’t be misled now or bow down before anyone. They will move together and build a new future for themselves,” he said while appealing youth to share the video among their circles.

Over 2.5 Lakh Earthen Lamps Lit In Ayodhya On Occasion Of Ram Navami

Nearly 2 lakh were carefully arranged along the steps of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghat.

Ayodhya was bathed in a divine glow and spiritual fervour on Sunday evening as more than 2.5 lakh earthen lamps were lit along the banks of the Saryu River at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghat on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami.

Thousands of devotees gathered at the ghats to participate in the grand Sandhya Aarti as chants of “Jai Shri Ram” echoed throughout the city. The celebration evoked a spiritual atmosphere reminiscent of Deepotsav, the festival of lights celebrated during Diwali.

Of the total diyas lit, nearly 2 lakh were carefully arranged along the steps of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghat and the surrounding areas, creating a mesmerizing visual display.

The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, now nearing completion following the grand ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony in January 2024, was also beautifully adorned with lights and flowers, adding to the festive ambiance.

Adding to the celestial grandeur of the day, the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple witnessed the sacred ‘Surya Tilak’–a beam of sunlight precisely illuminating the forehead of Ram Lalla at exactly noon, forming a divine tilak.

Priests were seen offering prayers to Ram Lalla during this rare and spiritually significant moment.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his heartfelt greetings on the occasion of Ram Navami.

Taking to social media platform X, he wrote: “Happy Shri Ram Navami to all Rama devotees and residents of the state on the holy birthday of the soul of India, the ideal of humanity, the best form of religion, our adorable dignity Purushottam Lord Shri Ram! Ram is in the faith, dignity and philosophy of India. Ram is the formula of India’s ‘Unity in Diversity.'”

IndiGo flight attendant accused of stealing gold necklace from 5-year-old girl; Bengaluru cops launch probe

A woman alleged that the flight attendant of IndiGo had stolen gold necklace of her daughter on board and Bengaluru police launched a probe. (Bloomberg)

A flight attendant on an IndiGo flight has been accused of stealing a gold necklace from a five-year-old child during a journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Bengaluru, reported The Times of India. The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) police have registered a case and begun an investigation based on a complaint filed by the child’s mother, Priyanka Mukherjee.

According to the report, Priyanka, who is married to an ISRO scientist, was flying with her two daughters on April 1. They were on a connecting journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Kolkata, with a stopover in Bengaluru. During the flight, her daughters—aged five and two—began to cry following a quarrel. A cabin crew member offered to take the older child on a short walk inside the plane to calm her down, while Priyanka attended to the younger sibling.

The child was returned to her seat as the aircraft began its descent into Bengaluru. It was only then that Priyanka noticed her daughter’s gold necklace, weighing approximately 20 grams, was missing. When she raised the issue with the cabin crew member, the staffer denied any involvement.

Despite reaching out to the airline, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and airport authorities, Priyanka reportedly said she received no clear response for several hours after landing. Airport officials informed her that since the incident took place during the flight, the matter fell under the jurisdiction of the airline and the police.

Attempts to register a complaint initially met with delays, said the report further. Priyanka claimed the police were unable to speak directly to the cabin crew member, as the airline said she was denying the allegation. Further, there was no CCTV footage available from the cabin to verify what had happened, and the airline declined to share crew photographs, which Priyanka said could have helped in identifying the staffer.

Adding weight to her claims, Priyanka pointed out that a video she had taken during the flight—while her daughter was eating cake—clearly showed the child wearing the necklace. Her husband later travelled to Bengaluru from Thiruvananthapuram to help escalate the matter. The family ended up staying overnight at the airport before continuing to Kolkata on a different flight, having missed their original connection. A senior police official told to the publication that an investigation is underway and assured that appropriate action will follow based on the findings.

Marriage, Divorce And Alimony: Legal Protection For Women

Rhythm Aggarwal_Criminal Defence Lawyer |

Despite growing societal awareness and sensitisation, India continues to remain a deeply patriarchal country. It is a land of stark contradictions—on one hand, goddesses are worshipped with unmatched devotion, and on the other, women face systemic control, coercion, and discrimination. Access to education, employment, and economic independence remains limited for many women, especially when it comes to marriage and related disputes, where the underlying social inequalities often come to the surface.

Marriage, a crucial socio-economic institution, outlines the rights and obligations of each spouse. In theory, marriage represents partnership and mutual respect; however, in practice, especially in patriarchal settings, it often becomes a space where gendered power imbalances manifest. The legal system plays an important role in promoting justice and fairness, especially for women, for whom divorce can mean significant emotional, social, and economic challenges. The legal framework, while not perfect, seeks to address these disparities by offering safeguards that aim to secure the social and financial wellbeing of women during and after marriage.

Globally and in India, marriage laws are designed to maintain equity between spouses. Yet, because women have historically been more vulnerable due to sociocultural norms and financial dependence, special legal provisions have been made to offer them greater protection.

One of the primary legal rights is the right to spousal maintenance and support. In many jurisdictions, including India, husbands are legally obligated to support their wives financially during the course of the marriage. This is especially critical for women who give up personal ambitions and careers to take on family responsibilities. These laws protect their right to financial stability following separation or divorce.

Protection from domestic violence is another crucial area of legal support. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 in India safeguards women from emotional, physical, and economic abuse within the marital home. Similar laws exist globally, affirming women’s rights to safety and dignity in marriage.

Economic security is further ensured through equal rights to marital property. Several jurisdictions acknowledge women’s equal stake in property acquired during marriage, protecting them from being left without assets after separation.

In matters concerning children, the law generally acts in the best interest of the child. Custody and child maintenance laws frequently grant mothers custodial rights, along with provisions for child support. These laws recognize the role women often play as primary caregivers and ensure that children’s upbringing is not financially compromised.

Legal aid and counselling services are also made available to assist women through these difficult transitions. Many legal systems provide these services free of charge to ensure women have access to justice and informed decision-making, regardless of their economic background.

In India, Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) ensures maintenance not just for wives, but also for dependent children and even aged parents. This provision serves as a safeguard against destitution and provides financial support to women who may otherwise be left without resources post-divorce.

Further, the Domestic Violence Act (DV Act) includes measures for maintenance and monetary relief for abused women, even after they have separated from their spouses. The Guardianship and Wards Act, 1890 also plays a vital role in decisions regarding child custody and maintenance, ensuring the financial welfare of the child and custodial parent.

Alimony is not the sole financial recourse available to women. There are several interim measures that provide protection during ongoing legal battles. Courts may grant interim maintenance to prevent financial hardship. Residence orders under the DV Act allow women to remain in the shared marital household, ensuring housing stability. Restraining orders can also be issued to prevent harassment or financial coercion.

The organisers of ‘Shobha Yatra’ alleged that stones were pelted on Ram Navami procession in Kanpur’s Nai Sadak area, however, the police dismissed the claims as rumour. Following this, security was tightened in the area, said police.

The city police received a written complaint from the organisers alleging that stones were thrown from rooftops of buildings near Nai Sadak, close to Chandreshwar Hata, while the procession was returning, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Shrawan Kumar Singh said.
A purported video of some people fleeing from the area also surfaced. However, Singh said, “Prima facie it appears to be a rumour, as no one has been hit by bricks or stones.”

“We have made proper inspections and scanned CCTV footage and videos and found no evidence corroborating the charges so far,” DCP Singh said.

“We have made an appeal to people to maintain peace and not pay attention to rumours,” he added. An investigation has been launched and if the incident is found to be true, strict action will be taken, the DCP said.

Kanpur Police To Collect Videos

Police have appealed to the public, including media personnel, to provide any video footage or pictures that could substantiate the allegations and aid the investigation.
“Some video footage is doing the rounds, in which some people are seen fleeing, has fuelled the controversy. However, the authenticity of the video is yet to be verified,” the official said.

Security Heightened In Several Areas of Kanpur

As a precautionary measure, reserved police forces and personnel from neighbouring police stations have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents, he said.

A man, pretending to be a cardiologist, performed 15 heart surgeries at a prominent hospital in Madhya Pradesh within just two months. However, a complaint alleges that he was not a qualified cardiologist, sparking concerns after several deaths were reported at the Mission Hospital in the Damoh district between December 2024 and February 2025.

The accused, identified as Narendra Yadav, used the name of renowned UK cardiologist Professor John Camm to deceive patients. He has been missing since a complaint was filed against him that claimed patients died due to his wrong treatment.

After the news came to light, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) launched an investigation to uncover the truth behind the deadly medical malpractice.

A team of NHRC officials, led by member Priyank Kanoongo, will arrive in Damoh from April 7 to 9 to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

In a post on X on Friday, Kanoongo shared that seven untimely deaths occurred at a missionary hospital in Damoh, where a fake doctor had been treating heart disease patients.

A local resident filed a complaint with the NHRC against Narendra alleging that he had used the name of John Camm to deceive patients. In the complaint, he also mentioned that the hospital, which is part of the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Yojana, had misused government funds.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Mukesh Jain and District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Vikram Chauhan have confirmed two deaths so far due to the alleged negligence.

Damoh Collector Sudhir Kochar said that a special team has been formed to investigate the recent deaths at Mission Hospital. He also declined to comment on the matter until the investigation was complete.

Families Who Lost Their Loved Ones

The families who lost their loved ones during treatment at the hospital are in shock after the revelations.

Nabi Qureshi’s 63-year-old mother, Raheesa, was hospitalised at Mission Hospital on January 13 after suffering a heart attack. The next day, January 14, she underwent an angiography. Two days later, on January 16, she had an angioplasty, during which she allegedly experienced a severe heart attack, requiring ventilator support. Unfortunately, she passed away shortly after the procedure.

“We were told she died of a heart attack, so we didn’t go for a post-mortem,” Nabi Qureshi told NDTV. “But we later learned from the media that a fake doctor was operating on patients. No one from the hospital or the administration has even spoken to us till now.”

7,000 Maharashtra Villages Abolish Discriminatory Customs Against Widows

A tide of social change has risen in Maharashtra, with over 7,000 villages declaring they have abolished customs and rituals which distress widows.

Musalgaon panchayat will soon pass a resolution to empower widows. (Representational)

A tide of social change has gradually risen in Maharashtra’s rural belt, with more than 7,000 villages declaring that they have abolished customs and rituals which distress widows and discriminate against them.

Of the 27,000 gram panchayats in Maharashtra, 7,683 villages have held gram sabhas and announced they have gotten rid of customs that discriminated against widows, activist Pramod Zinjade, who has been spearheading the campaign to eradicate evil customs related to widows, told PTI.

The campaign gained momentum after Herwad in Kolhapur district became the first village in the country to ban customs associated with widowhood in 2022 to maintain women’s right to live with dignity.

The village passed a resolution on May 4, 2022, banning the removal of ‘mangalsutra’ (sacred necklace worn by married women) and toe rings of a widow, wiping her sindoor (vermillion) and breaking her bangles.

Over the years, several rural pockets have taken a leaf out of Herwad’s book by including widows in Sarvajanik Ganpati pujas, haldi-kumkum events and flag-hoisting ceremonies.

Taking cognisance of the challenges faced by widows in the country, the National Human Rights Commission issued an advisory last year and asked the states and the Union Territories to improve the quality of life of these women and protect their dignity.

Talking to PTI, Herwad’s former sarpanch Surgonda Patil said the custom of breaking bangles and removing mangalsutra and toe rings has almost stopped.

”Earlier, we would visit homes where deaths occurred to check if these customs were followed. But now, people are more aware,” he said.

He further said a few widows in the village have remarried, and they are included in social and religious gatherings.

Herwad resident Vaishali Patil, who lost her husband 12 years ago, said, “Widows are being treated with dignity and respect. People have realised we are humans. The mindset, however, has to change, and age-old customs cannot be stopped overnight.” She said convincing the elders in families to let go of certain rituals is hard and is still a work in progress.

Pranjal Wagh, former sarpanch of Kadoli village in Nagpur district, said she started the practice of inviting widows for haldi-kumkum programmes much before the Herwad gram sabha’s resolution.

“When I was the sarpanch from 2017-22, widows didn’t go out and socialise. I would invite all women for haldi-kumkum events and offer gifts to widows, despite objections,” she said.

The Kadoli gram sabha also passed a resolution to ban evil customs related to widows, but it is not followed strictly, Wagh said, adding that she invites 1,000 women for haldi-kumkum every year.

Anil Shirsat, sarpanch of Musalgaon in Nashik district, said his village was 90 per cent literate and doesn’t follow evil practices against widows.

“We don’t have the custom of removing mangalsutra, wiping sindoor and other rituals. For the last three years, we have been using 15 per cent of funds the gram panchayat receives to help five needy widows every year,” he said.

He said a resolution to empower widows will be passed in the next gram sabha.

“We will ask self-help groups to include widows and ensure their economic empowerment,” he said.

Sanjay Pawar, a member of the Dhondvir Nagar village panchayat in Nashik district, said their gram sabha had resolved to ensure widows live with dignity.

“We ensure they get pensions and homes under different government schemes. The gram panchayat takes care to resolve their problems,” he said.

Social activist Lalit Babar, who works in the Kolhapur, Sangli and Solapur districts, said 76 gram panchayats in Sangola took an oath not to follow the age-old discriminatory customs related to widows.

“We have roped in block development officers and integrated child development services (ICDS) workers. When we get information about a man’s death, we visit the home to check if his wife has been forced to perform any of the rituals,” Babar said.

India’s first vertical lift sea bridge to open today: What you need to know

The new Pamban Bridge was built to handle more traffic, ensure durability, and improve maritime navigation, boosting regional connectivity and growth.

The new Pamban Bridge, connecting Rameswaram with mainland India, that will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Ram Navami (April 6).(PTI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, April 6, marking the opening of India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge.

Spanning the Palk Strait, the 2.07 kilometre bridge will facilitate smoother connectivity and is set to be unveiled on the occasion of Ram Navami.

It replaces the original Pamban Bridge, built in 1914, which was a cantilever structure with a Scherzer Rolling Lift span connecting Rameswaram Island to mainland India.

Over time, the bridge became insufficient for growing transportation demands and was affected by the harsh marine environment. However, in 2019, the Centre sanctioned the construction of the new bridge, designed to meet modern transportation needs while preserving the cultural significance of the region.

The new Pamban Bridge is a technologically advanced structure designed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a public sector unit under the ministry of railways.

Key features of the bridge:

  • The 72.5-meter navigational span can be raised up to 17 meters to allow larger ships to pass.
  • The bridge is 3 meters higher than the existing one, improving sea connectivity.
  • It is built with materials designed to ensure durability, including stainless steel reinforcement and high-grade protective paint.
  • The bridge’s substructure is designed to accommodate two tracks, with the superstructure currently supporting a single line.

A 24-year-old woman tragically lost her life after falling from a roller coaster ride at an amusement park in southwest Delhi’s Kapashera area, said police on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Priyanka, visited the water park in Kapashera with her fiance on Thursday when a ride malfunction led to her fatal fall, the police said in a statement.

They added that there were several injury marks on the victim’s body, including an ENT bleed, a lacerated wound on the right leg, a puncture wound on the left leg and multiple abrasions on the right forearm and left knee.

She was rushed to Manipal Hospital by her fiance Nikhil where the doctors declared her dead, a senior police officer said.

An MLC (medico-legal case) intimation regarding the incident was received at Kapashera Police Station following which an investigating officer visited the hospital and collected the medical report.

“Visible injuries on the body included an ENT bleed, a lacerated wound on the right leg, puncture wound on the left leg and multiple abrasions on the right forearm and left knee,” the officer said.

Nikhil told the police in his statement that he and Priyanka got engaged in February and had gone to Fun and Food Village and boarded a roller coaster ride around 6:15 pm on Thursday.

Priyanka allegedly fell off during the ride after some stand broke, he said.

Based on the complaint and preliminary findings, an FIR has been registered under sections 289 (negligent conduct with respect to animals or machinery) and 106 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder by negligence) of the BNS, an officer said.

The post-mortem examination of the deceased has been conducted and the body has been handed over to the family members, he added.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and responsibility for the incident, police said.

Priyanka, a resident of Chanakyapuri, worked as a manager in a telecom company in Sector 3, Noida, they said. Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother and a sister.

Why Is India, Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee Plan A Pushback Against China?

PM Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka where the two counties signed several crucial deals including defence pacts and Memorandun of Understandings. One of the important deals is an agreement to develop Trincomalee as a major energy hub.

PM Narendra Modi with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka isestablishing a new bond of friendship with between the two countries which are already bounded by their mythologies and culture. In one such another step to bolster strategic influence in the Indian Ocean Region, India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Sri Lanka signed an agreement to develop a multi-faceted energy hub in the eastern Sri Lankan city of Trincomalee.
The deal was finalised during PM Modi’s visit to Colombo and after his meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This was first visit to the country by PM Modi after Dissanayake took office in last September.

“The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of the Republic of India, the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, and the Government of the United Arab Emirates for cooperation in the development of Trincomalee as an energy hub was signed by Prof. K.T.M. Udayanga Hemapala, secretary, ministry of energy (Sri Lanka), and Vikram Misri, Foreign Secretary (India),” a government press release stated.
Why Is Trincomalee Important?
In the words of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Trincomalee has immense potential to become a regional hub for energy cooperation. The proposed energy hub here will have a multi-product pipeline and potential use of a World War II-era oil tank farm, partially operated by the Sri Lankan subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), reported TOI.
Trincomalee is a natural deep-water harbour with historic strategic value. Developing it will make India and the UAE leverage from combined technical expertise as Trincomalee can serve as a regional energy logistics centre, the report added.

“The UAE is a strategic energy partner for India, making it an ideal collaborator for this first-of-its-kind initiative in the region,” Misri told reporters in Colombo.
Trincomalee And a China Deterrence
The efforts also hold importance given the China’s ambitions to hold more power in the Indian sub-continent. A recent remark by Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus asking China to increase its arms to Bangladesh has already renewed concerns for India.
PM Modi has promised Dissanayaka full support in rebuilding as Sri Lanka continues to battle a dying economy. The trilateral project in Trincomalee is significant to India’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Sri Lanka, especially at a time when China continues to enhance influence through large-scale infrastructure projects.
This includes the $3.2 billion oil refinery at Hambantota being built by China’s Sinopec, reported Reuters. India’s engagement with Colombo, along with the UAE is seen as a step that can counterbalance China’s footprint in the island nation.

Banaras Railway Station Retiring Room Draws Comparisons to a ‘Dance Bar’

Social media users feel taxpayer money has been “wasted” on “tacky” ambience.

A glimpse of the facilities at Banaras Railway Station. Photographs: Ministry of Railways via X

When the Ministry of Railways shared a glimpse of the newly-renovated retiring room at Banaras Railway Station, it only seemed to bring one thing to people’s minds: a dance bar. The choice of aesthetics, including purple and blue profile lighting, and chandeliers, drew comparisons to adult establishments on social media.

“The refurbished retiring room at Banaras Railway Station, Uttar Pradesh has been beautifully renovated with upgraded amenities, passengers can now enjoy enhanced comfort and convenience,” the ministry wrote on X.
A series of pictures shows the types of rooms to choose from and a hallway. One appears to be a suite-sized accommodation with two beds and a laminate interior. Other lodgings, though smaller, have similar matching couches and tables, and LEDs that observers said were distinctly evocative of dance clubs.

“The central pole is missing. Please add that too,” a commenter joked.

A second user asked, “Why have you given Dance Bar kind of lighting ? You could have kept simple 4700k white balanced or even warm white.”
X users complained that taxpayer money had been “wasted” on what they thought was “tacky” ambience that was anything but comfortable even to view digitally. Many suggested the lights be replaced by warmer colours so as to not hurt the eyes of those staying.
Some others have tried to take it up with the Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, demanding an explanation for why the retiring room looks like it was tendered to the lowest bidder.

India’s rivers are home to 6,000 dolphins – but they are in trouble

A photo of the Gangetic river dolphin

India’s longest and most holy river, the Ganges, is home to thousands of dolphins. But their survival is under threat.

But these aren’t like the ones found in oceans. They don’t leap out of the water in spectacular arcs; surface for long intervals or swim in an upright position. Instead, they swim sideways, spend much of their time underwater, have long snouts and are almost completely blind.

These are Gangetic dolphins, a species of river dolphin – and India’s national aquatic animal – that’s found largely in the Ganges-Brahmaputra river system in the northern part of the country.

A new survey finds India’s rivers host around 6,327 river dolphins – 6,324 Gangetic and just three Indus dolphins. A majority of the Indus dolphins are found in Pakistan as the river flows through both the South Asian countries.

Both these dolphin species are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Researchers from the Wildlife Institute of India surveyed 58 rivers across 10 states between 2021 and 2023 to produce the first comprehensive count of India’s river dolphins.

The origins of river dolphins are as fascinating as the creatures themselves. Often called “living fossils”, they evolved from marine ancestors millions of years ago, say scientists.

When the sea once flooded low-lying areas of South Asia, these dolphins moved inland – and when the waters receded, they stayed. Over time, they adapted to murky, shallow rivers, developing traits that set them apart from their ocean-dwelling cousins.

Experts say the new survey is crucial for tracking river dolphin populations. Since 1980, at least 500 dolphins have died – many accidentally caught in fishing nets or killed deliberately – highlighting the ongoing threat to the species.

Conservationist Ravindra Kumar Sinha says that up until the early 2000s, there was very little awareness about river dolphins.

In 2009, the Gangetic river dolphin was declared India’s national aquatic animal to boost conservation. Steps like a 2020 action plan and a dedicated research centre in 2024 have since helped revive its numbers.

However, conservationists say there’s still a long way to go.

Dolphins continue to be poached for their flesh and blubber, from which oil is extracted to use as fishing bait. Other times, they collide with boats or get caught in fishing lines and die.

Nachiket Kelkar of the Wildlife Conservation Trust told Sanctuary Asia magazine that many fishermen often didn’t report accidental deaths of dolphins fearing legal trouble.

Under Indian wildlife laws, accidental or targeted dolphin killings are treated as “hunting” and carry strict penalties. As a result, many poor fishermen quietly dispose of the carcasses to avoid fines.

River cruise tourism, which has picked up in India in the past decade, has further threatened their habitat. Dozens of cruise trips operate on both the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers.

“There’s no doubt that disturbances from cruises will gravely impact the dolphins, which are sensitive to noise,” conservationist Ravindra Kumar Sinha told The Guardian newspaper.

Mr Sinha believes that increased vessel traffic could push Gangetic dolphins towards extinction, much like it did to Baiji dolphins in China’s Yangtze river.

River dolphins face threats partly due to their own evolution. Nearly blind, they rely on echolocation – high-pitched sound pulses that bounce off objects and return as echoes – to navigate murky waters. While this trait suits their habitat, it also makes them vulnerable to modern threats.

She runs Kolkata’s first Singaporean cafe, helping trafficked women and their children

Three months ago, Josephine Tan opened iDelight Cafe, the first dedicated Singaporean cafe in Kolkata, with a nod to the memory of her popiah-hawker grandmother. But, she didn’t move to India to be a restaurateur.

Josephine Tan (centre) and her husband, Raj (right), together with their staff, are serving up Singaporean food like laksa in Kolkata, India. (Photos: Josephine Tan)Kaya toast for 70 rupees (S$1.10), laksa for 250 rupees and kopi for 80 rupees – these are some of the items you’ll find on the menu at Kolkata’s first Singaporean restaurant.

Singaporean Josephine Tan, 56, runs iDelight Cafe, the first eatery in the Indian city dedicated entirely to Singapore fare. Opened late December last year in trendy Hindustan Park, the young establishment has already garnered rave reviews from local content creators.

Here, you’ll also find Hainanese chicken rice, wantons both fried and in soup, soy sauce chicken noodles, mee siam, lo mai gai, ondeh ondeh and pandan cake. Food is handmade in-house, including things like kaya; while coffee powder, for instance, is authentic coffee powder from Singapore.

The dishes most popular with guests are the laksa, rendang and char siew chicken, Tan shared, and even Singapore-style curry chicken, which is “richer and rounder, less spicy and oily” than what locals are used to, is well-received. She hasn’t had to modify any of the dishes to suit local tastes.

In fact, “many people actually thank me for opening an authentic Singaporean restaurant. I never thought that people would thank me for opening a restaurant,” she said.

“Some told me that they missed Singaporean food so much and eating our food brought back many fond memories. One customer used to study at NTU (Nanyang Technological University) and he showed me a photo of a coffee cup that he had taken at NTU, and compared it with ours, and said that they looked exactly the same.”

In addition to bringing a taste of Singapore to Kolkata through food, she’s also incorporated a Singapore flavour into the cafe’s decor, for example, through the use of tiles that resemble Peranakan ones. “I love the Peranakan style – the tiles feel like home,” she said.

She also “wanted to replicate the murals in the streets of Singapore – they give me a nostalgic feeling”.

Painted on one of the cafe’s walls, next to a kopitiam uncle wielding an old-timey kopi sock, a woman hawks popiah from a roadside pushcart lit by a kerosene lamp. She is a tribute to Tan’s grandmother.

“My grandma was a widow and sold popiah when I was young. I used to follow her in her tricycle,” Tan recalled. “She would sell her popiah at wayang performances, and she would have her mobile ‘pom deng’, a kerosene stove.” Additionally, “she also had a stall in a kopitiam in Lavender Street. The whole family was involved in preparing the food. Her popiah was very tasty and she was lovingly known as the ‘popiah shou’.

“When I was contemplating what to draw on the wall, I thought of my grandma who sold popiah, and me sitting on the back of her tricycle.”

All three accused have reportedly been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, has been invoked against Chaurasia. Under this section, it is a criminal offence to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

CCTV Footage Of Rakshit Chaurasia Moments Before The Crash:

The police have also arrested Chauhan, while Chaurasia is currently lodged at the Vadodara Central Jail. Suresh Bharwad is absconding.

“We received the result of the three blood samples today, which showed positive for drugs. They were driving the car after smoking marijuana. We have arrested Rakshit Chaurasia’s co-passenger and the third accused will be arrested soon,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 4, Panna Momaya said.

The accident occurred around 12.30 am on March 14 near Muktanand crossroads in the Karelibaug area following which Chaurasia was arrested. A video of the incidents also went viral on social media. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle took a sharp turn, which caused it to hit the two-wheeler. The CCTV footage shows that the car was at high speed.

PM Modi meets Myanmar Junta Chief (Image: @narendramodi/X)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Myanmar’s junta chief earlier Friday, with discussions focusing on India’s assistance in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. The Prime Minister assured Myanmar that India is ready to send additional aid if required. During the meeting, PM Modi also insisted on the restoration of democracy in Myanmar, underscoring India’s commitment to democratic values in the region.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote: “Met Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. Once again expressed condolences on the loss of lives and damage of property in the wake of the recent earthquake. India is doing whatever is possible to assist our sisters and brothers of Myanmar in this critical time. We also discussed bilateral relations between India and Myanmar, particularly in sectors like connectivity, capacity building, infrastructure development and more.”
Following this, the Prime Minister met Bangladeshi Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, where he reiterated the importance of democracy in Bangladesh. PM Modi spoke about fostering a positive and progressive relationship between the two neighboring countries, while also cautioning that any rhetoric that could disrupt bilateral ties should be avoided.

During the discussions, PM Modi strongly raised the issue of minority rights in Bangladesh, calling upon the Yunus administration to uphold its responsibility in safeguarding them. This marks the first time India has spoken so openly about elections in Bangladesh, signaling a shift in its diplomatic approach.

Tortoise Gives Birth Aged 97 to Become Oldest First-Time Mother

The Western Santa Cruz tortoise is a subspecies of the Galapagos tortoise. Philadelphia Zoo

A 97-year-old Galapagos tortoise has given birth to four hatchlings and become the oldest first-time mother of her species, the Philadelphia Zoo said. Mommy and her similarly-aged partner, Abrazzo, both belonging to the western Santa Cruz subspecies, are the facility’s oldest residents and now its first parents in 150 years.
“This is a significant milestone in the history of Philadelphia Zoo, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this news with our city, region, and the world,” Jo-Elle Mogerman, President & Chief Executive, said in a statement on April 3.
“Mommy arrived at the Zoo in 1932, meaning anyone that has visited the Zoo for the last 92 years has likely seen her. Philadelphia Zoo’s vision is that those hatchlings will be a part of a thriving population of Galapagos tortoises on our healthy planet 100 years from now.”

The first of these critically-endangered newborns hatched on February 27; all are currently being looked after in the zoo’s Reptile and Amphibian House. The tortoises are to make their public debut on April 23, which will mark 93 years to Mommy’s arrival at the zoo.

There are few Galapagos tortoises as genetically valuable as Mommy under the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). Although many accredited facilities have breeding pairs, the last time one hatched was in 2019 at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina.
“This feat is even more incredible considering that Mommy is the oldest first-time producing female of her species in any US zoo,” Ashley Ortega, Galapagos Tortoise SSP Coordinator and Studbook Keeper for Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas, said.
“Prior to the hatchlings, there were only 44 individual Western Santa Cruz Giant tortoises in all US zoos combined, so these newest additions represent a new genetic lineage and some much-needed help to the species’ population.”

West Bengal Schools Plunged Into Crisis As 26,000 Teachers, Staff Axed After SC Verdict

Bengal schools plunged into crisis on Friday as nearly 26,000 teachers and staff stopped reporting for duty. (Representational)

Schools across West Bengal were thrown into turmoil on Friday as over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff stopped attending work, a day after the Supreme Court invalidated their appointments in the 2016 bribe-for-job scandal. The mass exit has disrupted several junior-secondary to higher secondary schools, many of which are currently conducting internal examinations, as per a report.

An HT report stated that the impact was severe at many schools. At Bansberia Ganges High School in Hooghly district, Headmaster Vishal Tiwari said, “Three life science and two mathematics teachers were among those whose appointments were cancelled by the court. It is extremely difficult for us to run the school.” He added that the school had lost 15 of its 41 staff members overnight.

The crisis extended to remote areas as well. In Jalpaiguri district’s Dhupguri, the lone Group-D employee at Ghoshpara Junior High School was among those affected. A local official, requesting anonymity, said, “After the teacher died in May, a teacher from another school was sent on deputation by the district school board. There was nobody to unlock the gate and classrooms on Friday as the Group-D staffer lost his job. The temporary teacher had to do his work.”

Teachers’ Appointment Scam Case

The Supreme Court verdict followed a prolonged investigation by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate, initiated on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. The agencies probed large-scale recruitment irregularities, with complainants alleging they were denied jobs due to widespread corruption.
The affected appointments were all made from a 2016 panel. The bench, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, stated that distinguishing between legitimate and illegitimate appointees had become impossible, compelling the court to scrap the entire list. Many of those impacted have questioned the move, pointing out that the CBI did not individually identify them as beneficiaries of corruption.

CM Mamata Banerjee Steps In

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while expressing disapproval of the decision, maintained her government would abide by the ruling. She urged the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) to carry out fresh appointments within three months for eligible candidates.

Who Is JosD92 And Why Has The Mystery Account Taken Over IPL Internet?

JosD92’s Super Chat comments on YouTube have made them a mysterious legend among IPL and cricket-loving fans. (YouTube / JosD92)

“Kya bakwaas kar rahein hain yaar aap JosD92? (What nonsense are you commenting JosD92?)” If you have tuned in on the cricket side of the Internet in the past few days, you might have come across a mystery account that is happily emptying their wallet to have their concern about IPL 2025 raised and heard during YouTube livestreams. JosD92’s modus operandi is simple. JosD92 joins cricket livestreams including one organised by a YouTube channel called ‘Sports Yaari’ routinely. There, the mystery person buys YouTube Super Chat to have their comment read by the host of the IPL livestream. The content of the comment? Hindi commentators and Dhoni.

What Is Super Chat?

Super Chat is an option on YouTube for the viewers attending a livestream to comment and stand out. A user can tap on the dollar sign in the live chat and send their purchased message across. The paid, customised comment appears on top of the live chat feed, making it visible for all, including the host of the livestream. It enables YouTubers to monetise through YouTube Partner Program. These highlighted comments are non-refundable.

JosD92

JosD92 uses the YouTube Super Chat feature to its maximum potential. The comments are usually crude jokes, each one unique from other, tailored in a way that eventually lead up to Dhoni and Hindi commentary in IPL 2025.

The mystery critic (or troll) has featured on two individual YouTube channels namely Sports Yaari and Sports Tak that discuss and analyse cricket and sports in their respective livestreams.

Sensing they are onto something, JosD92 started uploading videos on their personal channel. Guess the name of the YouTube channel. JosD92.

Since then, JosD92’s zingers have become wildly popular, especially on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). The videos are clipped segments from the said cricket-analysing YouTube channels reading out JosD92’s highlighted comment before realising the joke was, in fact, NSFW.

Others simply flocked to Google to know more about JosD92.

JosD92 doesn’t want to stop here, though. The YouTube commenter is accepting donations to stay on their unique, yet costly endeavour.

Hindi Commentary

JosD92’s critique, however, is far from unique. Hindi commentary panel, in the ongoing season of Indian Premier League (IPL), has come under severe criticism from all quarters owing to its quality or lack thereof.

Shayaris, old stories, double-meaning jokes have become the integral part of the commentary while cricket has taken the backseat, opined many users on ‘X’ while expressing their displeasure to drop in quality of cricket narration during the Hindi broadcast.

Another reason that has left even MS Dhoni fans exhausted is the exaggerated and over-the-top praise for the former India captain and current Chennai Super Kings player. Fans have found the supposed obsession with the 43-year-old player rather tacky and tiring.

Viral Rant

Before JosD92 found their shtick to convey their disdain about the Hindi commentary, a cricket fan’s humble plea to bring changes and improvements in the quality of broadcast resonated with one and many. Harbhajan Singh, part of the panel that is currently facing backlash, acknowledged the fan plea.

“To all the cricket broadcasters, IPL is going on right now, some days ago Champions Trophy was taking place, I humbly plead you to improve Hindi commentary. It has increasingly become difficult to tune in to a match running Hindi commentary,” the fan said in a now-viral video.

“In our childhood, we got to listen to Arun Lal, Maninder Singh, Sunil Doshi – we got to learn a lot about the game. There was a focus on the technical aspects of the game.”

Reactions to Hindi Commentary

There are endless posts on ‘X’ hammering Hindi commentators and their work in IPL.

Here’s one:

“I request Star Sports to replace their Hindi commentary team. Imagine a team needing 18 runs per over, yet these “Thala lovers” are still getting overly excited the moment Thala arrives. The first person who should be removed from the commentary team is Ambati Rayudu. How can a commentator openly admit that his favorite team is CSK and that he’s supporting them? Commentators may have personal preferences, but when they are on duty, they should remain neutral,” wrote one irked fan.

Expired breast milk as soap? Ohio mom’s unusual skincare fix wows some, makes others gag

Ohio entrepreneur Taylor Robinson who turns expired breast milk into soaps. (Instagram/@60secdocs, @leojudesoapco)

An Ohio entrepreneur’s unique product has prompted a heated debate among social media users. She sells natural bathing products, like soaps, made using expired breast milk. In a video, she claims her products have also helped people deal with a range of skincare issues.

“Taylor Robinson, owner of Leo Jude Soap Co. @leojudesoapco in Jackson, Ohio, repurposes expired breastmilk into soap. Most of the breastmilk she uses comes directly from local donors. Customers have used her soap for skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, and cradle cap,” Instagram page 60 seconds wrote while posting a video.

In the video, Robinson says, “People ship us their breastmilk. The milk’s normally expired and we will turn that into soap, so it’s not going to waste.” She then explains how they create the bathing products using breast milk.

How do people react?

Robinson reveals people’s reactions to her breast milk soaps are often polarising. While some are amazed by the products, others find it disgusting.

As the video continues, she talks about the “essence of motherhood” that has changed every aspect of her life, including her business.

What did social media say?

While some wrote they were “grossed out” by the whole concept, others defended her. One individual wrote, “Why are people disgusted by breastmilk? It’s to feed our babies. There’s nothing wrong with it, and it has many benefits. I would bathe my kids with BM added to the water. It’s great for their skin.”

Another commented, “I gave my old breast milk to the street cats of Istanbul! True story!” A third expressed, “It’s actually less gross than goat’s milk soap.” A fourth added, “Idk, I’d give it a shot. Lots of people use weirder stuff for skin care.”

7 Women Farm Labourers Die, 3 Rescued After Tractor Plunges Into Well In Maharashtra

Police and local administration officials immediately launched a rescue operation.

Seven women farm labourers, two of them aged 18, died and three others were rescued after a tractor-trolley ferrying them to an agriculture field plunged into a well in Nanded district of Maharashtra on Friday morning, an official said.

The accident occurred at around 7.30 am in Asegaon village which lies under jurisdiction of Limbgaon police station when the vehicle veered off the road and fell into the well filled to the brim with water, said District Information Officer (DIO) Pravin Take said.

Police and local administration officials immediately launched a rescue operation and pumped out a large amount of water from the well, he said.

At the end of the operation, bodies of seven women were fished out of the well, while three others were rescued, said the DIO.

“The woman were on their way to harvest turmeric at a farm. All those who died hailed from Gunj village under Vasmat tehsil in Hingoli district,” the official said.

The deceased were identified as Tarabai Satwaji Jadhav (35), Dhrupata Satwaji Jadhav (18), Saraswati Lakhan Burad (25), Simran Santosh Kamble (18), Chaitrabai Madhav Pardhe (45), Jyoti Irabaji Saraode (35), Sapna Tukaram Raut (25), he said.

Three other women farm labourers – Parvatibai Burad (35), Purbhabai Kamble (40), Satwaji Jadhav (55) — were rescued from the water body.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the accident and announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PM’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the families of each who died.

Over 1,200 Objects Crashed Into Earth In 2024, Raising Kessler Syndrome Concerns: Report

The accelerated accumulation of garbage in space can have devastating effects.

Earth’s space age is being threatened by the overcrowding of orbits where satellites and spacecraft perform important communication and navigation functions, as per a space safety report by the European Space Agency (ESA). The number and scale of commercial satellite constellations in certain Low-Earth orbits (LEO) is increasing every year while intact satellites or rocket bodies were now re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere on average “more than there times a day”.

“Combined with increasing launch traffic and high levels of solar activity, the number and size of re-entering objects is also increasing, with 1200 intact objects re-entering in 2024,” the report highlighted.

It added that there are more than 1.2 million objects larger than 1 cm in size that are capable of causing damage to existing satellites and the International Space Station (ISS) were floating in the orbit.

Such is the precarious situation that even if spaceflight operations were to cease completely today, the amount of space debris objects in Low Earth Orbit would only increase as “fragmentation events add new debris objects faster than debris can naturally re-enter the atmosphere”.

The accelerated accumulation of space debris has already raised the real possibility of a “collision cascading” effect called the Kessler Syndrome — a hypothetical scenario proposed by NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler in 1978.

Kessler Syndrome predicts that when the density of objects in Low Earth Orbit — roughly 100-1,200 miles above our planet reaches a certain critical level, it could lead to a chain reaction of collisions which could render the orbit unfit for human use and halt the space age.

Most satellites are placed in this orbit which is now viewed as the world’s largest garbage dump. As per NASA, there are close to 6,000 tons of materials in the orbit which will only increase with the advent of private players.

“To prevent this runaway chain reaction, known as Kessler syndrome, from escalating and making certain orbits unusable, active debris removal is required,” the report added.

Debris crashing

In December last year, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) stated that fragments of metal, belonging to a rocket weighing nearly 500 kg, crashed into Mukuku village in the Makueni county in the country’s northern region.

Similarly, last month, a portion of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket made an “uncontrolled re-entry into the atmosphere” over Poland and crash-landed into a man’s lawn, according to the Polish space agency.

Satellite images confirm deforestation in Hyderabad’s Kancha Gachibowli area

Last week, trees across a significantly large area–touted as the lungs of Hyderabad–were felled near the Hyderabad Central University campus to make way for an IT park. Satellite images confirm the extensive deforestation.

A geospatial analysis of the forest land suggests trees and vegetation over an area of nearly 2 sq km could have been removed between March 30 and April 2. Reports say about 50 earthmoving machines were deployed for the clearing operation in Kancha Gachibowli in Ranga Reddy district.

Protests erupted soon after the machines were spotted, with students rushing to the area, climbing on bulldozers and raising slogans against the police and the state government.

After protests from students and faculty of the Hyderabad Central University, and environmentalists, the Telangana High Court and the Supreme Court on Thursday put a stay on the clearing operation on the 400-acre land. According to official statements, the project is expected to attract investments of up to Rs 50,000 crore and generate employment for around five lakh people.

However, critics argue the environmental cost is too high, and a political row has erupted in the state over the issue. “If they don’t step back and change this decision, we will march to HCU with the people of Hyderabad in full force,” said Bharath Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Taraka Rama Rao (KTR), as he extended his party’s support to the protests. The BRS, now in opposition, has promised to reclaim the land and convert it into a sprawling eco-park if brought back to power.

KTR defended his previous government’s environmental record, stating: “We turned Hyderabad into a green city, earning national and international awards. Telangana became the number one state in India for green cover growth. We planted 270 crore saplings and increased Hyderabad’s green cover by 7.7%.”

The confrontation between police and protesters drew widespread condemnation from student groups and environmental activists, who demanded stronger action from the government to halt the destruction of green spaces.

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, took suo motu cognisance of the situation and issued a stern order halting all activity on the 400-acre plot, except measures to protect existing trees.

275 flyers of London-Mumbai plane get relief after being stuck in Turkey for over 30 hrs

Stranded passengers at the airport Credit: X/@loveenatandon

The Aam Aadmi Party has appealed to India and United Kingdom authorities to persuade Virgin Atlantic Airline to rescue 275 passengers abandoned for over 24 hours by the airline.

“Virgin Atlantic flight VS 358 left Heathrow London at 11:40 local time for Mumbai on April 2, 2025. It was due to land in Mumbai at 1:40 local time on April 3,” Preeti Sharma-Menon, AAP Mumbai president and national executive member, said.

However, it made an emergency stop at Diyarbakir Airport in Turkey as a passenger needed medical attention at 7 pm local time, April 2.

The plane made a “hard landing”, and VA said it was unfit to fly. So, all passengers were disembarked. The crew was sent to a hotel, but the passengers were cordoned off in one area at the airport.

“It’s been 24 hours and not single airline representative has met the passengers. They have barely any food, one toilet amongst 275 passengers, phones running out of batteries as they don’t have Turkish adapters. There are babies, pregnant women, diabetics and old people in this ordeal,” she said.

Diyarbakir is small military airport with no shops, no amenities, not even adequate toilets. They have 3 staff members and none of them speak English. Virgin Atlantic has not thought it necessary to provide basic hygiene or hospitality for over 24 hours.

“The sent one mail initially saying that they are trying to fix the plane and those passengers who wish to leave on their own may do so! But there are no other flights out of Diyarbakir so one doesn’t know how passengers are supposed to make their own arrangements,” she added.

Then they send another mail a few hours back saying that there is no availability of hotel rooms and they are still trying to fix the plane. That is not true. Hotels are available but neither is VA booking them nor is the airport authority letting the passengers go out on their own.

“This is almost like a hostage situation. VA could have easily arranged a couple of small planes to evacuate them out to Istanbul. But they haven’t bothered to do so. Unless the governments of India and UK intervene the airline will let the passengers stay stranded indefinitely,” the AAP leader said.

In the last 24 hours the complete absence of communication and comfort has shown the airline doesn’t care at all.

AAP leader took to her X account and thanked Indian Consular Officer in Turkey after the passengers were moved to a hotel on Thursday night.

She however said that a definitive plan on when they will arrive here.

Thanks to the Indian Consular Officer in Turkey the passengers were moved to a hotel last night. Virgin Atlantic has still not provided a definitive plan on when they will fly home.

A Bengaluru man resorted to a rather attention-grabbing way to say ‘goodbye’ to his ‘career’- a LinkedIn post on which went viral on social media. As per the man’s post, he was unemployed for the past ‘3 years’, as recruiters continuously ‘ghosted’ him. Fed up trying, here’s what the man did…

Man’s LinkedIn post goes viral.

In the current day and age, one of the most feared situations among the youth around the world is ending up unemployed despite impressive qualifications. Social media is full of instances where such dejected youth either resorted to doing whatever job they could find or simply giving up on everything altogether. However, it seems like this Bengaluru man had something else in mind; grabbing the attention in one of the most unique and creative ways possible! Taking to LinkedIn, the said man shared an ‘obituary’ for himself, which was basically to bid farewell to his ‘career’. As per the post, the man had been unemployed for almost 3 years, and was getting ‘ghosted and ignored’ by recruiters and managers. In the end, after trying everything- including ‘begging’- the man resorted to creating and posting his own ‘Rest In Peace’ post on social media.
The man clarified that he was not planning to end his life, but was simply tired of searching for a job. The post, soon after getting shared, went viral in an instant. Times Now could not confirm the authenticity of the post.
“Thank you, #LinkedIn, for everything. Thank you, industry leaders, for #Ghosting and ignoring me. Thank you for making me spend money on self-grooming so you can ghost me. Apologies for my posts and ranting. I know with this post none will hire me, no matter how good I’m or the recommendations received,” the post read.

“Chandini BS, Chanu, apologize if I hurt you; I really tried everything and begged, so I could be with you, but couldn’t get a job. I’m sorry. P.S.: I’m not gonna kill myself. Have a lot of things to do, cuisines to taste and places to visit. Just dead, trying to get a job, fix things, and be with the love of my life. Being unemployed for close to 3 years and being isolated is very hard,” the post continued.

The post was shared on LinkedIn, by the handle ‘Prashanth Haridas’. The post was shared two days ago and pulled more than 7K reactions from people.

“His only post where he received the most reaction and impression, sadly this is the reality. Please take care and connect with me. I might be able to share some info that might help,” a user said.
“Hey Prashanth, Let’s get in touch, times can be tough and lonely. Nevertheless, do let me know how I can be of help,” added a second person.
“I hear you, and I can only imagine how tough this journey has been. The job search can be incredibly isolating, but please know that your efforts are not in vain. Your persistence and resilience will pay off, and the right opportunity will come your way,” added a third person.

S Jaishankar’s ‘Cherry-Picking’ Jab, And A 6,500-km Coastline Reminder To Dhaka’s Yunus Over Northeast Remark

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Bangladesh leader’s comments have forced the administration to develop more robust railway and road networks both underneath and around the Chicken’s Neck corridor.

In a sharp rebuttal to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus – who described India’s Northeast as “landlocked” and positioned Bangladesh as the “guardian of ocean access” for the region, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today highlighted the role of India’s cast 6,500-km coastline and its geographical linkages with five Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) members.
“India shares borders not only with five BIMSTEC members, connects most of them, but also provides much of the interface between the Indian sub-continent and ASEAN. Our North-Eastern region in particular is emerging as a connectivity hub for the BIMSTEC, with a myriad network of roads, railways, waterways, grids and pipelines,” Jaishankar said in a statement.
Muhammad Yunus, during his recent to China, had urged Beijing to extend its economic influence to Bangladesh, controversially mentioning that India’s northeastern states being “landlocked” and had “no way to reach out to the ocean”.

During Yunus’s four-day visit, Bangladesh signed nine agreements with China and secured a $2.1 billion financial package.

“We are conscious that our cooperation and facilitation are an essential prerequisite for the smooth flow of goods, services and people in this larger geography. Keeping this geo-strategic factor in mind, we have devoted increasing energies and attention to the strengthening of BIMSTEC in the last decade. We also believe that cooperation is an integrated outlook, not one subject to cherry-picking,” Jaishankar added.
Yunus’ remarks were met with sharp reactions in India, particularly in the Northeast.

Calling Yunus’s remarks offensive, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Bangladesh leader’s comments have forced the administration to develop more robust railway and road networks both underneath and around the Chicken’s Neck corridor. “Though this may pose significant engineering challenges, it is achievable with determination and innovation. Such provocative statements by Md Younis must not be taken lightly, as they reflect deeper strategic considerations and longstanding agendas,” he said.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh accused Bangladesh’s interim government of treating India’s Northeast as a “strategic pawn” and warned Yunus against making “reckless comments” about India’s sovereignty.

Kerala Court Stays Proceedings Against Baba Ramdev In ‘Misleading’ Ads Case

The Kerala Court on Thursday stayed all proceedings against Baba Ramdev in a misleading ads case.

The Kerala High Court on Thursday stayed all proceedings in a lower court against Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, his associate Acharya Balakrishna and their company Divya Pharmacy in a “misleading” advertisement case.

Justice V G Arun stayed the proceedings in the Palakkad magisterial court for three months, saying there was prima facie merit in their claim that cognisance of the offence was taken after the period of limitation.

“There appears to be prima facie merit in the submission of the senior counsel (for the petitioners) that going by section 3(d) read along with section 7 of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, as well as section 550 of the BNSS, 2023, the cognisance of the offence is taken beyond the period of limitation.

“Hence, there shall be an interim stay of further proceedings in ST No.1547 of 2024 on the files of the Judicial Magistrate of First Class – II, Palakkad, for three months,” the High Court said.

The interim order was issued on the plea moved by the company, Ramdev and Balakrishna seeking quashing of the proceedings against them in the case.

The High Court also issued notice to the state government and the Office of the Drug Inspector, Palakkad, seeking their stand on the plea by June 30, the next date of hearing.

The proceedings against Ramdev and others were initiated on a complaint by the Drugs Inspector, Palakkad.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered against them under section 3(d) read with section 7(a) of the Drug and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act 1954.

Need for a Brady Rule in the Indian criminal justice system

Criminal Law & Practice

The principle of fair trial is a fundamental pillar of justice, ensuring that no innocent person is wrongfully convicted due to the suppression of evidence. The landmark US Supreme Court ruling in Brady v. Maryland (1963) set a critical precedent by mandating that prosecutors must disclose all exculpatory evidence to the defence.

Commonly referred to as the Brady Rule, this doctrine has significantly influenced the American legal system. The question remains – should India adopt a similar principle?

The Brady ruling originated from a case where the prosecution withheld a co-defendant’s confession that could have altered the sentencing of the accused. The US Supreme Court held that suppressing material evidence favourable to the accused, whether intentional or unintentional, violates due process. This judgment strengthened prosecutorial ethics and reinforced the right to a fair trial by ensuring that no evidence crucial to the defence is kept hidden.

How a Brady Rule could reform Indian criminal law

India’s legal framework recognises the right to a fair trial under Article 21 of the Constitution, but there is no explicit provision in the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and now the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), that mandates the prosecution to disclose all exculpatory evidence. This raises concerns about prosecutorial accountability and transparency in criminal trials. While Indian courts have time and again called for fairness in trials, the absence of a structured legal mandate like the Brady Rule leaves significant gaps in implementation.

A Brady Rule could significantly reform Indian criminal law by mandating the prosecution to disclose all material evidence, including information favourable to the defence. While Section 207 of the CrPC requires furnishing certain documents like witness statements and reports, it lacks an explicit provision ensuring that exculpatory evidence is shared. Implementing a Brady-like rule would enhance transparency, prevent wrongful convictions and uphold the integrity of trials by ensuring that no crucial evidence is withheld from the accused.

The Supreme Court has consistently upheld the principle that fairness is fundamental to criminal trials, as reaffirmed in Zahira Habibullah Sheikh v. State of Gujarat (2004). Integrating Brady principles into Indian law would strengthen this commitment by mandating the disclosure of exculpatory evidence, preventing wrongful convictions and ensuring justice is served with full transparency.

Indian courts have repeatedly recognised the prosecution’s duty to act fairly in cases, with the Supreme Court affirming in Maneka Gandhi v. Union of India (1978) that fairness and due process are essential to Article 21. However, the lack of a legal framework akin to the Brady Rule allows prosecutors significant discretion in disclosing evidence, creating the risk of potential misuse and undermining the principles of a fair trial.

In the landmark case of Pullukuri Kottaya v. King Emperor, the Privy Council stressed that fair disclosure is essential to ensuring a fair trial. This principle has been reaffirmed in multiple judgments, including Siddharth Vashisht v. NCT Delhi, where the Supreme Court highlighted the prosecution’s duty to disclose all relevant material to safeguard the fairness of proceedings. Furthermore, in Sasikala v. State, the Court ruled that the accused has the right to access documents submitted to the court, even if they were not formally exhibited by the prosecution.

These cases reflect the Indian judiciary’s consistent commitment to upholding the principles of natural justice and fair trial. While India does not have an explicitly codified Brady Rule, these judicial precedents align with its core objectives of ensuring transparency and preventing wrongful convictions due to suppressed evidence.

The absence of a mandatory disclosure rule often forces defence lawyers to seek court intervention to obtain crucial evidence. A legislative amendment to the CrPC, now BNSS, could address this gap by establishing a structured disclosure obligation, ensuring that prosecutors are required to provide all material evidence, including exculpatory information.

Enhancing prosecutorial accountability in India is crucial, as the prosecution’s close association with the police often results in selective presentation of evidence, sometimes leading to the withholding of crucial material to secure convictions. Implementing a structured disclosure rule would serve as a safeguard against such practices, ensuring transparency and fairness while fostering greater accountability within the criminal justice system.

Adopting the Brady principle would strengthen India’s justice system, but its implementation faces significant hurdles. Investigating agencies may resist disclosing information that undermines their case, fearing it could weaken prosecutions. Additionally, many defendants, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds, often lack awareness of their rights and access to competent legal counsel, limiting their ability to demand fair disclosure. Moreover, without robust judicial oversight, a mandatory disclosure rule could prove ineffective, as enforcement gaps may allow prosecutorial discretion to persist unchecked.

India ranks 36 out of 170 nations on readiness for frontier technologies global index

The report further noted that Brazil, China, India, and the Philippines are developing countries outperforming in technology readiness.

United Nations: India ranks 36th out of 170 nations on a global index measuring a country’s readiness for frontier technologies, improving its ranking from last year, according to a UN report.

The 2025 Technology and Innovation Report, issued by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), stated that India ranked 36th in 2024 on the ‘Readiness for Frontier Technologies’ index, improving its position from 48th in 2022.

The index combines indicators for ICT deployment, skills, research and development (R&D) activity, industrial capacity, and access to finance.

India ranks 99th for ICT, 113th for skills, 3rd for R&D, 10th for industrial capacity, and 70th for finance. Bhutan, India, Morocco, the Republic of Moldova, and Timor-Leste improved their positions in human capital due to more years of schooling and a greater share of high-skill employment in their working populations, the report said.

The report further noted that Brazil, China, India, and the Philippines are developing countries outperforming in technology readiness.

“It might be expected that countries with higher per capita GDP are better prepared for frontier technologies. Overall, this is true but… some countries perform far better than their levels of income may suggest, as indicated by their distance from the regression line of the index score on GDP per capita,” it said.

Developing countries need to prepare themselves for a world that is rapidly being reshaped by AI and other frontier technologies. A useful measure in assessing national preparedness to use, adopt, and adapt frontier technologies is the UNCTAD Frontier Technologies Readiness Index.

“Developed countries lead the ranking, but some developing countries, notably Singapore, China, and India, hold prominent positions.” The report also notes that China, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States show scientific strength in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The United States leads the world in terms of private investment in AI, at $67 billion in 2023, or 70 per cent of global AI private investment. The only developing countries with significant investments were China in second position, with $7.8 billion, and India in tenth position, with $1.4 billion.

The report noted that AI is expected to reach $4.8 trillion in market value by 2033, becoming a prominent force in digital transformation.

However, access to AI infrastructure and expertise remains concentrated in a few economies. Just 100 firms, mainly in the US and China, account for 40 per cent of global corporate R&D spending. AI could impact 40 per cent of jobs worldwide, offering productivity gains but also raising concerns about automation and job displacement.

The benefits of AI-driven automation often favour capital over labour, which could widen inequality and reduce the competitive advantage of low-cost labour in developing economies.

However, AI is not just about replacing jobs – it can also create new industries and empower workers. Investing in reskilling, upskilling, and workforce adaptation is essential to ensure AI enhances employment opportunities rather than eliminating them, the report said.

Nahan, Himachal Pradesh: BJP workers took out a candle march in Paonta Sahib late on Wednesday evening to press their demand for a CBI inquiry into the death of Chief Engineer of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) Vimal Negi.

Negi went missing on March 10 and his body was found in Bilaspur on March 18. The relatives of the deceased sat on a dharna outside the HPPCL office in Shimla with the body the next day.

The march, led by Himachal Pradesh BJP president Rajiv Bindal, included party workers from all the five assembly constituencies of Sirmour district.

Raising slogans against the state government and demanding a CBI inquiry into the death of Vimal Negi, the protest march started from the PWD Rest House and went up to the Valmiki Chowk, through the main bazaar of Paonta Sahib.

Negi’s wife alleged that her husband was tortured by the superior officers for the past six months and seniors also misbehaved with him. Negi was intentionally forced to work late at night even during illness, she said.

A case of abetment to suicide and joint criminal liability under BNS was registered on Wednesday against HPPCL Director (Electrical) Desh Raj and Managing Director (MD) Harikesh Meena.

Desh Raj was suspended while Harikesh Meena was transferred.

Addressing the workers, Bindal said the state government was not ready to listen to the voice of common people and that is why people of different sections of the society were on the roads against the state government in every district.

‘Mixed Bag, Not A Setback’: Govt Official On Trump’s 26% Tariff On India

The commerce ministry is assessing the impact of the US’s 26% reciprocal tariffs on India, with a 10% universal tariff starting April 5 and the rest from April 10. India and the US are negotiating a trade deal, aiming to finalise its first phase by fall.

A senior government official stated on Thursday that the commerce ministry is assessing the impact of the 26% reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on India.
According to the official, the universal 10 per cent tariffs will come into effect on all imports into the US from April 5 and the remaining 16 per cent from April 10.
“The ministry is analysing the impact of the announced tariffs,” the official told PTI, adding there is a provision that if a country addresses the concerns of the US, the Trump administration can consider reducing the duties against that nation.

India is currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with the US, with both nations aiming to finalise the first phase by fall (September-October) this year.
“It is a mixed bag and not a setback for India,” the official said.
The US President listed the high tariffs charged by India on American products as he announced reciprocal tariffs on countries across the board, declaring a 26 per cent “discounted” reciprocal tariff on India.
“This is Liberation Day, a long-awaited moment. 2nd April 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to make America wealthy again. We are going to make it wealthy, good, and wealthy,” Trump said on Wednesday in remarks from the Rose Garden at the White House as he announced the closely watched reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose levies on American goods.
As he announced the tariffs, he held up a chart that showed the tariffs that countries such as India, China, the UK, and the European Union charge, along with the reciprocal tariffs that these countries will now have to pay.
The chart indicated that India charged 52 per cent tariffs, including currency manipulation and trade barriers, and America would now charge India a discounted reciprocal tariff of 26 per cent.
PM (Modi) Is A Great Friend But…’: Trump
As he announced the tariff rate on India, President Trump called the Indian tariff regime “very, very tough,” even as he acknowledged that Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is a ‘great friend’ of his.
“India very, very tough,” the 78-year-old POTUS said at the Make America Wealthy Again press address. Trump then referred to PM Modi’s recent visit to the US and PM Modi’s meeting with him and a host of other key figures in his administration, including White House senior advisor, billionaire Elon Musk.

A small act of kindness can have a powerful ripple effect, as seen in a recent interaction between a Pakistani YouTuber and an Indian student in Canada. Hamza Aziz, a Pakistani immigrant working as a nurse, runs the YouTube channel What Motivated You, where he interviews people about their career inspirations. During one such encounter, his generous tip to an Indian student sparked a chain reaction of heartwarming gestures from strangers.

In one of his videos, an Indian student named Navneet arrived at his place to deliver food as an Uber delivery driver. Hamza pointed out that the food was incorrect and Navneet offered to go back to the restaurant to get the right order. Impressed by Navneet’s dedication, Hamza tipped him C$100 (around Rs 6,000) and asked what inspired him to do his current job. Navneet revealed he is from Punjab, living away from his family and hoping to open his own barbershop in Canada.

“Navneet lives alone in Canada, far from his family, sacrificing comfort for a dream. But he’s not just delivering food — he’s also chasing passion. In his free time, Navneet cuts hair. It’s something he genuinely loves. He’s talented, passionate, and dreams of one day opening his very own barbershop in Canada,” Hamza wrote in the caption.

The video went viral and received over four million views. An entrepreneur saw the footage and offered to sponsor Navneet’s barber school education. In the second part of the video, Hamza shared that a GoFundMe page was set up where many people donated money to buy Navneet new haircut tools for his barber training.

Later, as a gesture of thanks for all the support, Navneet invited Hamza over for a haircut.

“During the cut, Navneet opened up about his longing for his family in India — whom he hasn’t seen in over 4 years — and his dream to make them proud by opening his own barbershop in Canada one day,” Hamza shared in the caption.

“Navneet’s journey is a reminder that when you follow your passion, anything is possible,” he added.

Man Refuses To Give Seat To Woman In Delhi Metro, Internet Says ‘Equality Works Both Ways’

The woman, at the centre of the argument, mocked the man in return, further escalating the drama happening inside the metro coach.

The incident took place on the Blue Line near Janakpuri West. (Photo Credits: Instagram)

Another day, another video straight from Delhi Metro. In the latest viral clip, a man is seen involved in a heated argument with a group of women after he refused to give up his seat for a female passenger. It all started when a man travelling on the Blue Line near Janakpuri West with his backpack and earphones on responded sarcastically to bystanders asking him to “be the bigger person” and give up his seat.

The woman, at the centre of the argument, also mocked the man in return, further escalating the drama happening inside the metro coach. Despite everyone’s insistence and repeated requests, the man did not give up and kept his seat. The incident was recorded by one of the women who could be heard saying, “You’ve caused a commotion in the entire coach.” She added, “Try being quiet for once. Be the bigger person and show some manners.”

Unaffected by what unfolded, the commuter repeated her words in an aggressive tone before exiting the train. As the video progresses, it is seen that the man finally stood up but not because of what you are thinking of. He was not giving in but had to give off at the next stop.

Upon being shared, the clip caught everyone’s attention, prompting viewers to react which further led to a debate. A section of people defended the man and argued that the seat wasn’t reserved for anyone and that he had every right to sit. Others, however, criticised him for his questionable behaviour.

High Temperatures Combined With Pollution Caused 1.5 Times More Deaths In 10 Cities, Shows Study

The findings are alarming as India, home to some of the world’s most polluted cities, is also facing record-breaking temperatures and more intense heatwaves due to climate change

Researchers found that air pollution had a stronger impact on the death rate, especially during days with higher temperatures. (PTI)

As India braces for another searing summer, researchers have found that severe air pollution combined with high temperatures caused 1.5 higher mortality than periods with low pollution and moderate heat in 10 cities. The findings are concerning since India is home to some of the most-polluted cities in the world and experiences record-breaking temperatures with more intense heatwaves due to climate change.

The latest study conducted by a global team of scientists, including those from Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi, and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, analysed the data for 10 cities, including Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi from 2008 to 2019.

Among 3.6 million deaths in these cities with daily mean PM2.5 levels between 20 to 100 μg/m3, researchers found that air pollution had a stronger impact on the death rate, especially during days with higher temperatures.

PM2.5 LEVELS WAY BEYOND SAFE LIMITS

At moderately high temperature, which could vary among the cities depending on their geographical location, a 10 µg/m³ increase in PM2.5 levels was linked to a 0.8 per cent increase in heat-related mortality. But association of PM2.5 on daily mortality increased, especially at extreme temperatures with the death rate surged up to 4.6 per cent.

The death risk increased steadily from 8.3 per cent at 20 µg/m³ of PM2.5 to 63.9 per cent at 100 µg/m³ of PM2.5 exposure level with consequent increase in extreme ambient temperature. “So, the risk of mortality is high on days when daily PM2.5 concentration and temperatures is extreme, and such trend was specifically noted in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata,” said co-author Tirthankar Banerjee from BHU, Varanasi.

The researchers also pointed out that air pollution’s impact is generally underplayed in summers due to good visibility, but the pollution persists. “In cities like Delhi, the PM2.5 level even during summer is way beyond the safe limits prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The annual daily PM2.5 level has remained typically high, and now there is increasing heat stress too.”

The study found a linear association of temperature with daily mortality as air pollution levels increased. The analysis is based on city-wide PM2.5 data available with Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi, fed into two models which estimated daily exposure levels and temperatures.

Man Gets 2-Year Jail Term For Threat Call To Harm PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath

In a verdict delivered on March 29 in the 2023 case, First Class Judicial Magistrate (Esplanade Court) Hemant Joshi dismissed the defence’s argument that the accused, Kamran Khan, was mentally unstable.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused. (Representational))

A Mumbai court has sentenced a man to two years in jail for making a threat call to police and claiming underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was offering him money to kill PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, noting showing sympathy to the accused was not justified.

In a verdict delivered on March 29 in the 2023 case, First Class Judicial Magistrate (Esplanade Court) Hemant Joshi dismissed the defence’s argument that the accused, Kamran Khan, was mentally unstable.

The magistrate noted no evidence was produced by the accused to support his claim on mental health.

The court found Kamran Khan guilty of offences under sections 505(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Besides handing him two years imprisonment, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

As per the prosecution, the accused made a call to the Mumbai police’s main control room in November 2023, wherein he threatened that he would blow up the state-run J J Hospital.

The accused further said “There is a threat to Modi’s life, Dawood Ibrahim is giving Rs 5 crore, he has asked (him) to eliminate Modi,” the complainant in the case told the court.

The person also stated that men of Ibrahim, designated as a global terrorist, were offering Rs 1 crore to him to blow up UP Chief Minister Adityanath with a bomb, the court was told.

As per police, the accused made the call to the control room when he was at J J Hospital in central Mumbai and his medical check-up by doctors was getting delayed due to a long queue of patients.

The court said it was clear the police machinery was caught in a bind due to the crime committed by the accused.

IAF’s Jaguar Fighter Jet Crashes Near Gujarat’s Jamnagar, 1 Dead; Watch Videos |

An Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot lost his life, while another remains in critical condition following the crash of their two-seater Jaguar fighter jet near Gujarat’s Jamnagar Airfield. The IAF confirmed the tragic incident on Thursday, stating that the aircraft crashed during a routine night training mission late Wednesday in Suvarda village, approximately 12 km from Jamnagar city.

Videos Of Crash Site Go Viral

Footage circulating on social media showed the crash site engulfed in flames, with debris scattered over a vast area. The cockpit and tail section of the aircraft were spotted separately, consumed by fire.

IAF Issues Statement On Crash

The aircraft reportedly suffered a technical malfunction, compelling the pilots to eject. Despite their efforts, one pilot succumbed to his injuries, while the other is undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Jamnagar. The IAF expressed deep sorrow over the loss and conveyed its condolences to the deceased pilot’s family. “IAF deeply regrets this loss of life and stands resolutely with the grieving family,” read the official statement.

A Court of Inquiry has been initiated to investigate the cause of the crash. The IAF stated that the pilots’ actions ensured no harm was caused to the airfield or nearby civilian areas.

Crash Took Place During Training Sortie

Reports quoting officials confirmed that the ill-fated Jaguar was on a scheduled training sortie when it met with the accident. The aircraft, known for its twin-engine configuration, has been an integral part of the Indian Air Force since its induction in the late 1970s. Designed for deep penetration strikes and ground attack missions, the Jaguar has played a vital role in India’s defence operations over the decades.

Another Jaguar Jet Crash Reported Earlier This Month

In a similar incident reported earlier this month, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Jaguar fighter aircraft crashed near Baldwala village in the Morni Hills area of Haryana’s Ambala district on March 7. The aircraft had taken off from the Ambala airbase for a routine training sortie when it encountered a system malfunction, prompting the pilot to eject.

Deepak Mohnani, who owns the godown, was arrested by a team of Banaskantha police from neighbouring Sabarkantha district on Tuesday night, Inspector General of Border Range Chirag Koradia said.

“We have arrested the main accused, Deepak Mohnani from a place in Sabarkantha,” the Range IG told PTI. The warehouse – Deepak Traders – was owned by Deepak and his father Khubchand Mohnani, officials earlier said.

The explosion, which occurred approximately at 9.45 am, flattened the godown in an industrial area near Deesa town, around 30 km from the Banaskantha district headquarters.

“All the deceased persons were originally from Harda and Dewas districts of Madhya Pradesh,” district collector Mihir Patel said. At least 21 persons, including children and women, were killed, while six others injured in the incident.

Hyderabad university students launch ‘indefinite class boycott’

TGIIC, which started clearing the land in the Kancha Gachibowli village in the IT corridor of Hyderabad using earthmovers on Sunday, has continued the activity on Monday and Tuesday

Police personnel detain students of the University of Hyderabad staging a protest demanding the removal of police personnel and earth-moving machinery from the campus, in Hyderabad, on Tuesday (PTI)

Students at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Tuesday launched an indefinite class boycott in protest against the Telangana government’s decision to auction 400 acres of Kancha Gachibowli through the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) to build an IT park.

“Police officials are not letting us go outside the gate of the campus to protest against the ongoing deforestation by TGIIC. Kancha Gachibowli is home to hundreds of flora and fauna species. We are demanding an immediate halt to TGIIC works and removal of police from campus. We have launched indefinite class boycott strike today and we will continue till deforestation stops,” said Akash Kumar, vice president of UoH students’ union. He also demanded that the police and more than 50 earthmoving machines “razing down the forests” in the land should be taken away from the university immediately.

The students said that Kancha Gachibowli, located near the central university, was home to 734 plant species, 220 bird species, and vulnerable wildlife such as the Indian Star Tortoise. The students gathered at the main gate of the institution and raised slogans against the Congress government. The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) and other unions and parties aligned with it.

Amid the protests, TGIIC, which started clearing the land in the Kancha Gachibowli village in the IT corridor of Hyderabad using earthmovers on Sunday, has continued the activity on Monday and Tuesday. The Telangana police on Sunday took 55 students into preventive detention and later released 53 students, but two students — B Rohit Kumar and Erram Naveen Kumar — were arrested and remanded to judicial custody, the protesting students said.

Meanwhile, BJP MPs from Telangana led by Union minister G Kishan Reddy met Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday and sought the central government’s intervention in protecting the 400 acres of land at the village. They requested the Centre to “immediately explore options to halt the land auction process.” Pradhan assured the MPs of “appropriate cooperation in this regard”.

The state government in a statement issued on Monday reiterated that it was the sole owner of 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli village and a survey was conducted on July 19, 2024 in the presence of university officials for boundary demarcation.

“The University of Hyderabad does not own even an inch of land in this survey….The government headed by chief minister A Revanth Reddy gives the highest priority to the hyper-local sustainability and environmental needs in every single plan,” the government said.

The two sides send out the congratulatory messages marking the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China.
In his message, Xi said India and China are “important members of the Global South and both are in a crucial stage of modernisation”, and hence their partnership would contribute to each other’s success and the cooperative dance of ‘the dragon and the elephant’.
“President Xi Jinping and his Indian counterpart Droupadi Murmu besides Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Prime Minister Narendra Modi exchanged congratulatory messages respectively,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a media briefing, reported PTI.

“The historical course of our bilateral relations shows that being partners that contributed to each other’s success and the cooperative dance of ‘the dragon and the elephant’ is the right choice for both sides,” Guo further said.

Mahadev Betting App Case: Days After Raids, CBI Names Ex-Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel in FIR

Days after multiple raids at the residence and other premises linked to Bhupesh Baghel and his associates, the CBI has named the former CM in its FIR in the Mahadev betting app case.

New Delhi: Former Chhattisgarh CM and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel has been named as one of the accused in the FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Mahadev betting app case. His name was also there in an FIR filed by the Chhattisgarh Economic Offence Wing (EOW). This comes after the CBI raided 60 places in connection with this matter.
Earlier, both the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids at multiple locations in connection with the alleged Rs 6,000 crore Mahadev app betting scam. The agency also raided the properties of Baghel’s associates, including Congress MLA Devendra Yadav, former political advisor Vinod Verma, and several senior police officials.
The former Chhattisgarh CM had earlier accused the CBI of conducting politically motivated raids at his residences in Raipur and Bhilai, saying the action was aimed at generating material for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming speech during his visit to the state on March 30.

“The raids were politically motivated. The action was carried out just to generate contents of the PM’s speech during his upcoming visit to the state on March 30. There was no other reason,” Baghelsaid while talking to reporters after the CBI concluded the action at his residence in Bhilai.

“I didn’t receive any notice about raids in Raipur’s official residence. I learnt about the raids after I came out of the house now. Whatever they had planted there, I will not be responsible for it because neither I, not my family members were there. This is their (CBI’s) conspiracy,” he added.
During the ED’s searches at his, his son’s house and others’ premises in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to a liquor scam, Baghel said no one could stop Congress in Punjab through the means of raids.

Soros-funded Bengaluru-based Company Received Rs 8 Crore From USAID: Report

ASAR management has not been able to explain the nature of services provided to CEEW and its relation with USAID. ASAR and CEEW have not come out with a statement on the ED probe.

The ED is also probing Soros’s funding of Indian civil rights organisations, think tanks and other entities in the garb of foreign direct investments.

New Delhi: US Agency for International Development (USAID), facing heat from the Trump administration for promoting a “left, liberal and woke” agenda abroad, allegedly funded three Bengaluru-based companies with links to hedge fund operator George Soros. The development came during a probe by the Enforcement Directorate on three Bengaluru-based companies for alleged breach of Foreign Exchange Management Act. These companies reportedly received Rs 25 crore from Soros Economic Development Fund, which is the impact investment arm of Open Society Foundations, one of the several entities founded by Soros.
During the probe, ED officials found that one of the companies – ASAR Social Impact Advisor – also received Rs 8 crore from USAID as foreign inward remittance in 2022-23, according to Times of India report.
ASAR management has reportedly told ED that the USAID funding was reimbursement for the services it provided to a Delhi-based public policy think tank, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), which, according to its website, is focused on “understanding global challenges and implications for India’s development”.

CEEW has former deputy chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Suresh Prabhu, who served as a minister in the first Modi govt, as its trustees.

ASAR, however, was unable to explain the nature of services provided to CEEW and its relation with USAID. ASAR and CEEW have not come out with a statement on the ED probe, the TOI report said.
Besides ASAR, Rootbridge Services Pvt Ltd and Rootbridge Academy Ltd are the other two Bengaluru-based companies that had received funding from SEDF. All the three companies received the funding between 2021 and 2024.

‘Everyone Is Disturbed…’: SC Refers To Video Of Girl Running With Books During UP Demolition Hearing

During the hearing, the court took note of a viral video of an eight-year-old girl who was seen clutching her books and running as a bulldozer razed shanties in UP’s Ambedkar Nagar.

Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up the Uttar Pradesh government (File)

The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government and the Prayagraj Development Authority for 2021 demolition drive and termed it “illegal” and “insensitive”.

During the hearing, the court took note of a viral video of an eight-year-old girl who was seen clutching her books and running as a bulldozer razed shanties in UP’s Ambedkar Nagar.

“There is a viral video where a small girl can be seen outside a demolished house. Everyone is very disturbed by such visuals,” Justice Ujjal Bhuyan remarked during the hearing, as reported by Live Law.

The video, which surfaced last week on X, showed a girl child clutching books and running away from a shanty during a demolition. As per the news agency PTI, the video is from an anti-encroachment drive in Jalalpur, Ambedkar Nagar. The police has stated that the demolition was carried out to remove encroachments from village land based on an ejection order of the Jalalpur tehsildar court.

The bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice Bhuyan, who slammed the government and authorities for the demolition of the houses of a lawyer, a professor and three others in Prayagraj in 2021, expressed concern over the manner in which demolitions were being conducted in Uttar Pradesh.

The apex court also asked the authorities to pay a fixed compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each homeowner who approached the court in such cases within six weeks.

The bench further said that such cases shock the conscience, adding that the residential premises of the appellants have been high-handedly demolished.

“We will record this whole thing as illegal and we will say that as far as rights in the land are concerned, we are not offering any comment,” Justice Oka said, adding, “And fix compensation of 10 lakhs in each case. That is the only way to do this. So that this authority will always remember to follow due process.”

Police said efforts are on to identify the truck owners and persons associated with illegal mining.

15 Kg Heroin Seized As Punjab Police Arrest Drug Smuggler Linked To Pakistan, US Syndicates

Punjab police on Monday claimed to have arrested a drug smuggler linked to Pakistan and USA based drug syndicates and recovered 15 kg heroin from his possession.

Stating that the arrested accused has been identified as Harshpreet Singh, a resident of Amritsar, Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, said that apart from recovering heroin haul, police teams have also impounded the white coloured Activa scooter used by the accused for drug smuggling.

The development came a day after Tarn Taran police dismantled a drug trafficking cartel with the arrest of two drug smugglers and recovered 6 kg heroin from their possession.

DGP Yadav said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the drug consignment is linked to a smuggling network operated by USA-based smuggler Gurnam Kallowal, who is in link with Pakistan-based drug smuggler identified as Pahalwan. The latter was using drones to drop the drug consignment from across the border, he added.

He said that probe has also revealed that the accused retrieved narcotic consignments near the border area to further deliver it to local drug peddlers and was sending payments of drug proceeds through hawala channels on the instructions of his USA-based handler.

How India Looked From Space? Sunita Williams Mentions ‘Incredible’ Himalayas, Mumbai-Gujarat Coastline & Breathtaking Landscapes

Indian Origin NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams (Screengrab) | X@msktripathi

Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently returned to Earth after spending 286 days in space, recounted her experience when she was passing over India onboard the International Space Station (ISS). On Tuesday, Williams and her fellow NASA astronaut interacted with the media for the first time after coming back to Earth.

Williams, whose father is from India, beautifully described India. During the interview, she talked about mighty Himalayas and the Mumbai-Gujarat coast. Sharing her views on how India looked from space. Williams replied, “just amazing”.

“India is amazing. Every time we went over the Himalayas, Butch (Wilmore, fellow astronaut) got incredible pictures, it is just amazing,” the Indian-origin scientist told reporters.

Notably, Williams often talks about his Indian roots. As per the Williams astronaut, she was awestruck by the views of India’s landscapes. In her media interaction, she mentioned about fishing fleets in the west to the mighty Himalayas in the northern part of India.

And you can see, like I’ve described it before, just like this ripple that happened, obviously when the plates collided, and then as it flows down into India. It’s many, many colours,” she said.

Talking about the fishing fleet in the west, the Indian-origin NASA astronaut said, “I think, when you come from the east, going into like Gujarat and Mumbai, the fishing fleet that’s off the coast there gives you a little bit of a beacon that here we come, and then all throughout India, I think the impression I had was it was just like this network of lights from the bigger cities going down through the smaller cities.”

Williams also shared her experience while passing over the Himalayas. ” Just incredible to look at at night as well as during the day, highlighted, of course, by the Himalayas, which is just incredible as a forefront going down into India,” she said.

The 59-year-old astronaut also expressed her wish to visit his father’s home country. “I hope, and I think for sure, I’m gonna be going back to my father’s home country and visiting with people and getting excited about the first, or not the first, but the Indian national who’s going up on the Axiom Mission coming up, pretty awesome,” Williams added.

The Indian-origin astronaut also expressed her excitement about NASA’s upcoming Axiom mission. This mission will take four astronauts, including Indian Air Force test pilot and ISRO astronaut, Subhanshu Shukla.

For the unversed, Williams’ father Deepak Pandya hailed from Gujarat and came to the US in 1958 where he did his internship and residency training in Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She was born in Ohio to Deepak and Ursuline Bonnie Pandya.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had welcomed Sunita and her fellow Crew-9 members as they returned to Earth after the prolonged mission to ISS.

Williams and Wilmore returned to Earth after nine months on March 19. Their SpaceX capsule parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico, hours after departing ISS. Two other astronauts who returned to Earth along with Williams and Wilmore are -Nick Hague, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Soldiers brave icy winds while we sip on hot cappuccinos: Delhi High Court slams denial of disability pension

Army (picture for representative purpose)

The Delhi High Court recently underscored the importance of disability pension for soldiers who suffer the stresses and strains of military life, while affirming the grant of disability pension to two soldiers [Union Of India & Ors. Vs Ex Sub Gawas Anil Madso].

The Bench of Justice C Hari Shankar and Justice Ajay Digpaul observed that the possibility of disease and disability comes as a package deal when one goes to serve the country as a soldier.

“The bravest of soldiers is prone, given the conditions in which he serves the nation, to fall prey to bodily ailments which, at times, may be disabling in nature, rendering him unable to continue in military service. In such circumstances, the least that the nation can do, by way of recompense for the selfless service that the soldier has lent it, is to provide comfort and solace during the years that remain,” it added.

The Court explained that it is for this reason that laudable provisions for the grant of financial benefits (such as disability pension) have been introduced, to help soldiers who encounter disease or disability due to military service.

The Court also questioned if the selfless service rendered by soldiers can ever be truly compensated.

“(John F Kennedy said) ‘Ask not what your country can do for you; ask for what you can do for your country.’ There are those of us who eulogize and revere these words, but stop there. Then there are those who make it part of their lives, and are willing to sacrifice their all for their country – who, while we sip our hot cappuccinos by the fireplace, are braving icy winds at the border, willing to lay down their lives at a moment’s notice. Can anything, that the nation, and we as its citizens, give to these true sons of the motherland, ever be too much?” the Court remarked

There are those who are willing to sacrifice their all for their country. Can anything we give to these true sons of the motherland ever be too much?

The Court was hearing two appeals moved by the Union of India against the grant of disability pension to two soldiers by the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT).

One of these two soldiers was Gawas Anil Madso, who joined the army in 1985 and was discharged from military service in 2015 after being diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) Type II.

A release medical board (RMB) concluded that he would suffer 20 per cent disability for life but was not entitled to disability pension.

The Court disagreed with the decision not to grant him disability pension.

“The RMB Report is completely bereft of reasons, as to why, when the respondent (Madso) admittedly became a sufferer of DM 34 years after induction in service, the DM could be regarded as not attributable to military service,” the Court said.

The Court acknowledged that there was a service rule which said that a health condition arising during military service cannot automatically be presumed as having been caused by such army service.

However, the Court also held that this does not mean that the soldier has the primary burden of proving that the health condition is attributable to military service.

The Court concluded that the army authorities have to show that the decease is not a result of military service. In Masdo’s case, this was not done, the Court found.

“While we are not doctors, it is a matter of common knowledge that Diabetes is a disease which can be caused, and exacerbated, by stressful living conditions. The fact that the onset of the disease might have been while the officer was on a peace posting cannot, therefore, be determinative of the issue of whether the disease was, was not attributable to military service. In such a case, the RMB has a greater responsibility to identify the cause of the disease, so that a clear case, dissociating the disease and its onset, from the military service of the claimant officer, is established,” the Court held.

Consequently, the Court upheld the AFT’s decision to order the grant of disability pension to Madso.

Similarly, the Court also ruled in favour of Amin Chand, who joined the army in 2005 and was due to retire in 2020. However, before his retirement, he was diagnosed with Peripheral Arterial Occulsive Disease in his right lower limb. He was assessed to have a 20 per cent disability.

However, he too was denied disability pension, prompting him to approach the AFT, which granted him relief. By its March 27 ruling, the Court dismissed the Centre’s appeal against this verdict as well.

Referring to the RMB report based on which disability pension was denied to Chand, the Court held,

Seven, Including Four Children Die In Gas Cylinder Blast In West Bengal

7 people died in a gas cylinder blast in West Bengal

A gas cylinder explosion at a house in Pathar Pratima, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, claimed seven lives, including four children and two women, on Monday night. The blast occurred around 9 pm in Dholaghat village, also injuring a woman who has been hospitalised.

According to Sunderban Police District SP Koteswara Rao, all bodies have been recovered, and investigations are underway.

Preliminary findings suggest that two gas cylinders were present in the house, and the fire intensified after stored firecrackers ignited. “The blaze spread after the firecrackers ignited,” said Sunderban Police District SP Koteswara Rao, as quoted by PTI. Further details awaited.

In a separate incident, a gas cylinder blast triggered a fire at a night market near Varanasi Cantt railway station on Monday morning, damaging multiple shops. However, no casualties were reported, police said.

Sigra police station house officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra stated that the explosion occurred near pillar number 59 in front of the railway station. “Upon receiving information, firemen and police rushed to the spot and doused the flames after some effort,” Mishra told PTI.

Pannun Tried To Serve Summon To NSA Doval During PM’s US Visit But Secret Service Foiled It

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual citizen of the US and Canada, is wanted in India on terrorism charges.

The United States Secret Service Officials, who were guarding the Indian delegation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, thwarted Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun’s attempts to serve summons to Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval who was accompanying the PM. The development was confirmed by a US court hearing civil lawsuit filed by Pannun about an alleged murder plot against him, which American authorities said was planned by an Indian government agent.
The court in Southern District of New York found that service of summons was not completed. “The Complaint was not delivered to a member of the hotel management or staff or any officers or agents providing security for Defendant, as required by the Court’s Order,” it said.
As per the US court, Pannun hired two process servers and one investigator to place the summon outside the US president’s guest house in Washington DC, where Doval was staying during the latter’s 2-day trip to the US. The servers were stopped by US Secret Service agents guarding the Indian delegation and threatened with arrest.

The notice was in response to a civil lawsuit filed by Pannun in the murder-for-hire plot for which American authorities had blamed an Indian government agent named Vikash Yadav. The Indian government has conducted a probe into the issue and recommended legal action against Yadav.

Pannun’s lawyer told the court that the that the US Secret Service agents’ denial of entry to the server to place the notice at the Blair House server forced him to leave the notice with a nearby Starbucks store, which was the nearest public location where the server would not be arrested.
After reviewing the letter, a judge of the Southern District of New York said that “the complaint was not delivered to a member of the hotel management or staff or any officers or agents providing security for Defendant (Doval), as required by the court’s order,” reported the Times of India.
The development confirms the Indian position that the NSA wasn’t served the summons. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had described the claims as based on unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations.
The Pannun murder plot had snowballed into a major diplomatic row last year. The Biden administration not just sought accountability but also backed similar charges by Canada over the murder of another Khalistan leader named Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Later, India set up a high-powered enquiry committee to probe the activities of some organised criminal groups and terrorist organisations, “which undermined the security interests of both India and the United States”.
In November 2023, the UK newspaper Financial Times reported that the United States had foiled a plot to assassinate Pannun. This was later confirmed by officials from the Joe Biden administration.
Indian national Nikhil Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic last year and extradited to the US to face charges for his alleged involvement in the plot. His case will go to trial on November 3, 2025.

Noida Lamborghini Crash: Car Belonged To YouTuber; Driver At The Wheel Blames ‘Faulty Vehicle’

Lamborghini owner after accident (Image/News18)

One of the victims of the Lamborghini car crash that took place in Noida, claimed that the car was running at a speed of 300 km/hour. Two labourers from Chhattisgarh were injured after a Lamborghini hit them on a footpath adjacent to an under-construction building in Noida’s sector 94 on Sunday.

The victim told Republic TV that the Lamborghini that hit them was travelling apparently at a speed of 300 km/hour.

“A car was coming at a speed of 300 kmph. All three of us fell inside the drain after getting hit by the car. He was driving at 300 kmph,” the labourer was quoted as saying by Republic TV.

The victims were taken to hospital following the accident. They have suffered a fracture in their legs, according to police cited by PTI.

Meanwhile, the police arrested the car driver, identified as Deepak, a resident of Ajmer, and seized the car.

A probe found that Deepak, a car dealer, had visited Noida to test drive a Pondicherry-registered car. “The owner, Mridul Tiwari, a resident of Noida and a YouTuber with over 18 million subscribers, was selling the car and Deepak had come to check its condition,” Noida ADCP Sumit Shukla informed HT.

While the police are yet to release any official statement on the issue, the driver of the car told the officials during interrogation that the accident happened due to a fault in the vehicle.

Bhupendra Singh, In-charge at Sector 126 Police Station told PTI, “In the car accident two labourers were injured and they were from Chhattisgarh. They are out of danger and have fractures in their legs.”

The accident happened adjacent to an under-construction building, he said.

Notably, the accused in the car accident, Deepak, was arrested by the Noida police. However, his name has not been mentioned in the FIR, which was filed based on the complaint by an eyewitness, who is also the relative of one of the injured labourers.

Meanwhile, the owner of the car, Mridul, has been asked by police to appear for questioning.

Father Of YouTuber Claims ‘Technical Fault’

Meanwhile, Jai Kishan, the father of the Lamborghini driver has claimed that the vehicle had technical fault and his son Deepak had informed him about the same minutes before and after the accident.

Video Of Accident Going Viral Online

A video from the incident is also going viral online. In the clip, a man can be heard asking the accused if he knew how many people died there. To this, the accused asked the locals “koi mar gaya idhar? (did anyone die here?)” and came out of the car.

Raising A Stink: CAG Report Flags Major Lapses As Maharashtra’s Garbage Crisis Worsens

One of the most alarming revelations in the report is the 22 per cent decline in garbage collection efficiency between 2021 and 2022. (PTI)

Maharashtra is facing a waste-management crisis, with the latest Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report exposing lapses in garbage collection across the state leading to millions of tonnes of waste left uncollected. Despite rapid urbanisation, the state’s waste-collection efficiency has declined, exposing governance failures and poor planning by municipal authorities.

According to the report, Maharashtra generated a staggering 168.75 million metric tonnes of waste between 2018 and 2024. However, only 132.19 million metric tonnes were collected and processed, leaving behind 36.5 million metric tonnes of uncollected waste. This failure has led to increasing pollution, blocked drainage systems, and deteriorating sanitation conditions, especially in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik.

One of the most alarming revelations in the report is the 22 per cent decline in garbage collection efficiency between 2021 and 2022. Experts warn that this sharp drop indicates a systematic failure in managing urban waste. The report highlights poor implementation of waste-management policies, lack of modern technology, and insufficient manpower as key reasons for this crisis. Overflowing garbage bins and uncollected waste are not just an aesthetic problem—they pose serious health risks. Accumulated garbage attracts rodents, stray animals, and disease-carrying insects, increasing the spread of infections like dengue, malaria, and respiratory diseases. Furthermore, improper disposal of solid waste contaminates groundwater and deteriorates air quality, adding to environmental degradation in major cities.

The CAG report has placed the Maharashtra government under scrutiny, urging immediate corrective measures. While chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and power minister Nitin Raut have acknowledged the findings, no concrete action plan has been announced to tackle the issue. The report suggests that local municipal corporations should take greater responsibility and be held accountable for their failure to manage waste effectively.

Experts believe that the only way to resolve the crisis is through strict implementation of waste-management policies. The government must focus on improving garbage collection efficiency through better monitoring and accountability, investing in advanced waste processing and recycling technologies to handle increasing waste volumes, encouraging waste segregation at source to promote responsible disposal, introducing penalties for municipal corporations that fail to meet waste management standards, and creating awareness campaigns to educate citizens on responsible waste disposal and recycling practices.

42-year-old Indian man threatens to kill cabin crew on Singapore flight, arrested

An Indian man was arrested for threatening to kill cabin crew.( Representational image)

An Indian man was arrested after he threatened to kill a cabin crew member on a Singapore-bound flight and otherwise engaged in unruly behaviour while under the influence of alcohol. According to a report in news website Mothership, Singapore police will be charging the 42-year-old Indian national in court on April 1.

According to the police, the man started behaving in a threatening manner while onboard the flight on February 27. Details of the incident were shared in a police statement released on March 31.

Charges against the Indian man

Police said that the Indian man caused a disturbance on the flight to Singapore by grabbing a passenger seated next to him. He also annoyed other flyers by forcefully pushing the seat in front of him. He was believed to be acting under the influence of alcohol.

His aggressive behaviour continued when flight attendants attempted to calm him down. He later grabbed the wrist of a male cabin crew member and verbally threatened to kill him.

The 42-year-old man became compliant only after he was told that the plane would turn around if his aggressive behaviour continued. The crew then put him in restraints for the rest of the journey.

The Indian man was arrested after the flight landed at Singapore’s Changi Airport. He will now be charged with multiple offenses, including using criminal force to a person, being intoxicated onboard jeopardising good order and discipline, and criminal intimidation if the threat is to cause death. The last charge carries a jail term of up to 10 years or with a fine or both.

“Physical aggression, verbal threats and attempt to interfere with the crew’s duties can compromise flight safety,” the police reminded all flyers, adding that the department would not hesitate in taking action against anyone who endangers passengers or crew members on board.

Woman cannot be forced to undergo virginity test, violation of Article 21: Chhattisgarh HC

Representational photo showing a gavel. Credit: iStock photo

The Chhattisgarh High Court has said that a woman cannot be forced to undergo a virginity test which violates Article 21 of the Constitution that guarantees her fundamental right to protection of life and liberty, including the right to dignity.

The high court said granting permission for a virginity test would be against the fundamental rights, cardinal principles of natural justice and secret modesty of a female, emphasising that Article 21 is the “heart of fundamental rights”.

The observation by high court judge Justice Arvind Kumar Verma came in response to a criminal petition filed by a man who demanded his wife’s virginity test alleging she was in an illicit relationship with another man, challenging a family court’s order dated October 15, 2024, which rejected the interim application.

The wife had alleged that her husband was impotent and refused to cohabit.

The HC said if the petitioner wants to prove that the allegations of impotency are baseless, he can undergo the concerned medical test or produce any other evidence.

“He cannot possibly be permitted to subject the wife to undergo her virginity test and fill up the lacuna in his evidence”.

The order passed on January 9 was made available recently.

The high court noted that the contention of the petitioner demanding a virginity test of his wife is unconstitutional as it violates Article 21 of the Constitution which includes the right to dignity of women.

“Article 21 of the Constitution of India not only guarantees the right to life and personal liberty but also the right to live with dignity, which is crucial for women.

“No woman can be forced to conduct her virginity test. It is a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 21. It has to be borne in mind that Article 21 is the ‘heart of fundamental rights’,” the high court stated.

Justice Verma further said that the virginity test is a violation of the basic right of women to be treated with decency and proper dignity.

“The right to personal liberty enshrined under Article 21 is non-derogable and cannot be tinkered with in any manner. The petitioner cannot possibly be permitted to subject the wife to undergo her virginity test and fill up the lacuna in his evidence in this regard.

“Be that as it may, but in any case, granting the permission for virginity test of the respondent would be against her fundamental rights, the cardinal principles of natural justice and secret modesty of a female,” the high court noted.

Non-derogable human rights refer to rights that are absolute and may not be subject to any derogation, even in times of war or emergency.

The bench further observed that the allegations made by both parties against each other are the subject matter of evidence and a conclusion can be drawn only after evidence.

“The High Court is of the considered opinion that the order impugned is neither illegal nor perverse and there is no judicial error committed by the trial court,” it said.

The couple got married on April 30, 2023, as per Hindu rites. They lived together at the husband’s family residence in Korba district.

The wife allegedly told her family members that her husband is impotent, and she refused to establish a marital relationship or cohabit with her husband, the petitioner’s counsel said.

She filed an interim application on July 2, 2024, under section 144 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) before the family court in Raigarh district seeking maintenance of Rs 20,000 from her husband.

In response to the maintenance claim interim application, the petitioner sought a virginity test of his wife alleging that she was in an illicit relationship with her brother-in-law. He claimed the marriage was never consummated.

Giripremi climbers scale eight pinnacles in three days in Thane

The climbers were students of Diploma in Mountaineering and Basic Rock-Climbing courses, organised by the Guardian Mountaineering Institute.

In a major feat, a group of students from Pune-based adventure and mountaineering club has successfully scaled eight pinnacles in the vicinity of the remote Mahuli Fort in the Thane district.

The climbers were students of Diploma in Mountaineering and Basic Rock-Climbing courses, organised by the Guardian Giripremi Mountaineering Institute.

The mission was undertaken under the leadership of Krishna Dhokle, an Everester.

The pinnacles climbed included Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Shankar, Parvati, Vajra, Undir, and Damru, and the climb was completed over the course of three days.

The expedition was successfully completed under the expert mentorship of mountaineer Umesh Zirpe, recipient of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Life Achievement Award and Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Award.

On March 21, the team, with the help of villagers, embarked on a challenging trek from the base village of Vandre, navigating through dense terrain. After a grueling five-hour hike, including a steep final ascent, the team reached the artificial cave located in the base of the Mahuli Navra peak.

Once the base camp was set, the team rested for a while before Dr Pramod Patil secured the route by installing ropes from the cave to the base of the main peaks.

The climb began with Vishnu Peak, where Prashant Patil started the ascent. After a mixed 350-foot climb, including chimneys, cracks, and slanted slopes, he reached the shoulder of the peak.

Krishna Dhokle followed, climbing the next 100 feet of mixed rock and soil to reach the summit. Mahesh Peak was then scaled easily to conclude the first day’s ascent.

On the second day, the team used jumaring to reach the first peak (Vishnu).

Subsequently, Sachin Shah, Prashant Patil, and Krishna Dhokle climbed Brahma, Shankar, Parvati, and Vajra peaks in succession, completing the second day’s climbing and returning to the cave for the night.

On the third and final day, 14-year-old mountaineer Maloji Dhokle and Dr Pramod Patil scaled the Undir and Damru pinnacles, standing 100 and 80 feet tall respectively.

50 Naxalites Surrender In Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur Hours Ahead Of PM Modi’s Visit

Fifty Naxalites, including 14 with a cumulative reward of Rs 68 lakh on their heads, surrendered in Chhattisgarh | ANI Image

Fifty Naxalites, including 14 with a cumulative reward of Rs 68 lakh on their heads, surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Sunday, a police official said.

The Naxalites, 10 of whom are women, turned themselves in before senior officials of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), he added.

“The cadres surrendered citing the hollow and inhuman Maoist ideology, exploitation of tribals by senior cadres of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) as well as differences brewing within the movement. They are also impressed by security forces setting up camps and the ’Niya Nellanar’ (your good village) scheme under which forces and the administration are providing basic amenities in remote areas,” Bijapur Senior Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav said.

Of the 50 who surrendered, Ravindra Karam (19), Roni Parsik (22), Rakesh Kadti (30), Kope Lekam (24), Shanti Tati (22) and Sonu Hemla (22) were in crucial positions in different Maoist formations including PLGA (People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army) number 1 and carried cash rewards of Rs 8 lakh each, he said.

“Three surrendered ultras have bounties of Rs 5 lakh each, while five have rewards of Rs 1 lakh each on their heads. The District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, Special Task Force (STF), CRPF and its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) played a key role in their surrender,” Yadav said.

All the surrendered Naxalites were provided assistance of Rs 25,000 each, said the SP, who urged Naxalites to take advantage of the government’s rehabilitation policy and join the mainstream of society.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the surrender of the 50 Naxalites and said those who lay down weapons and adopt the path of development will be rehabilitated.

“It is a matter of great joy that 50 Naxalites in Bijapur (Chhattisgarh) surrendered, abandoning the path of violence. I welcome those who leave violence and weapons and join the mainstream of development,” he wrote on ’X’ in Hindi.

Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy is clear that any Naxalite who leaves weapons and adopts the path of development will be rehabilitated and connected to the mainstream.

“After March 31, 2026, Naxalism will become history in the country. This is our resolution,” the Union home minister asserted.

Congratulating security forces, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said positive results of the new surrender and rehabilitation policy of the state are clearly visible on the ground.

“People trapped in the vicious circle of Naxalism are now laying down arms and returning to the mainstream of society. Our government is ready for the revival of every person who shuns the violence and chooses the path of peace,” Sai said in a statement.

This success is the result of the resolve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to eliminate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) by 2026, the CM added.

“The construction of roads in remote areas, establishment of schools and hospitals under Niyad Nellanar scheme have ignited the flame of trust and hope towards the government in Bastar region. This is not just surrender, it is the return of trust. Those who were a symbol of fear yesterday are becoming the hope of the future today,” Sai said.

“Chhattisgarh is now moving forward on the path of peace, development and new consciousness. More than 2200 Naxalites have been arrested or have surrendered in the state so far under the double engine government (since December 2023). More than 350 Naxalites have been killed,” Sai said.

The surrender came hours ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.

Addressing a public meeting in Mohbhattha village in Bilaspur district in the afternoon, Modi said the situation is rapidly changing and a new era of peace is setting in Naxal-affected areas.

“Over the decades, Naxalism got encouragement in many states including Chhattisgarh due to policies of Congress. Whichever region lagged in development, Naxalism flourished there, but what did the party that ran the government for 60 years do? It declared such districts as backward and turned away from its responsibility,” the PM said.

Incidentally, security forces gunned down 18 Naxalites, including 11 women, in twin encounters in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma and Bijapur districts in the Bastar region on Saturday, recording a major success in the mission to eradicate Naxalism before March 31, 2026.

‘Take Care’: IIIT Allahabad Student’s Final Words To His Family Before Killing Self In Hostel Campus

The police said that a detailed investigation into the matter is underway | Image/X

A student from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Allahabad, killed himself by jumping from the fifth floor of his hostel campus, reportedly due to frustration over failing an examination, on Saturday night, said the police.

The incident took place in Prayagraj’s Jhalwa area, just a day before Rahul Madala Chaitanya, a specially-abled student from Telangana, was set to celebrate his 21st birthday on Sunday.

The preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that Rahul was upset after he failed an examination, the police said. An institute-level panel has been set up to probe the case.

The police added that Rahul took the extreme step at 11.55 pm on Saturday.

“Upon receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries,” Dhoomanganj Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ajendra Yadav was quoted as saying by NDTV.

He added that the student was likely upset for the past few days over not qualifying for an examination. A detailed investigation is underway.

Rahul’s Last Words To His Mother

On receiving the information, Rahul’s family arrived in Prayagraj on Sunday afternoon. His mother, Swarnalatha, said she last spoke with her son on Saturday night.

“He had sent a message, asking me to take care of his younger brother and father,” she said.

She added that she got scared reading his message and immediately called him but his phone was not reachable. “Then I called his friend who went to check on him,” she said.

“His friend asked another student who was passing by about Rahul’s whereabouts. He then abruptly disconnected the call. He called me 10 minutes later, saying my son is being taken to the hospital,” she added.

Swarnalatha said she found out about the suicide when she arrived at the campus on Sunday afternoon. She mentioned that the institute told her he had been absent from classes for six months, but claimed that the administration never notified the family about it beforehand.

One of the labourers injured in a Lamborghini car crash in Noida Sector 94 reportedly claimed that the luxury vehicle was overspeeding. Two labourers from Chhattisgarh were injured in the crash and have been admitted to a nearby hospital and are said to be out of danger. They have suffered a fracture in their legs, police said.

Citing the police, Republic TV reported that the labourers have been identified as Dijen Ravidas and Rambhu Kumar.

One of the labourers told Republic TV that they were struck by the Lamborghini, which was travelling toward them, apparently at a speed of 300 km/hour.

“A car was coming at a speed of 300 kmph. All three of us fell inside the drain after getting hit by the car. He was driving at 300 kmph,” the labourer said.

A purported video surfaced online showing that after the accident, a man was heard asking the accused if he knew how many people died here. To this, the accused asked the locals “koi mar gaya idhar? (did anyone die here?)” and came out of the car.

Following this, someone in the video could be heard saying, “police ko bulao (call the police)”.

“I saw the car in a video of one of my influencer friends. The driver could not control the car, hit people, and then crashed into the divider. It is a Pondicherry-registered car,” Gaurav, an eyewitness, told news agency ANI.

What the initial investigation found:

  • A probe revealed that Deepak, a car dealer, had come to Noida to test drive the Pondicherry-registered car. “The owner, Mridul Tiwari, a resident of Noida and a YouTuber with over 18 million subscribers, was selling the car and Deepak had come to check its condition,” Noida ADCP Sumit Shukla told HT.
  • According to Republic TV, the accused, Deepak, was taken for a medical examination, after which the police confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
  • The accident happened when Deepak, who was on a test drive, lost control of the luxury vehicle and crashed into workers sitting on the pavement, the report added.

German Vlogger Praises India’s Metro System, Says It’s Better Than Western Europe’s

Alex Welder expressed surprise at India’s efficient metro system.

A German vlogger has gone viral on social media after he praised India’s metro system, stating it was better than some of the transit routes in Western Europe. Alex Welder took to Instagram to share the video with his over 70,000 followers where he expressed surprise at the efficiency, cleanliness and modern infrastructure of the metro systems in cities such as Delhi and Agra, highlighting how they had exceeded his expectations.

Mr Welder admitted that prior to coming to India, he had his fair share of preconceived notions which included stumbling upon a dilapidated transport system with shabby buses and noisy tuk-tuks.

“Before coming to India, the stereotypes about public transport in the country were demolished or old buses and trains and noisy tuk-tuks and rickshaws,” Mr Welder captioned the post.

“I didn’t know that some cities in India like Agra and Delhi actually have a very decent metro system. Delhi even has platform screen doors on some of its lines, plugs to charge your phone and designated seats for women and elderly,” he added.

Mr Welder revealed that he stayed in South Delhi and managed to get a seat in the metro for the majority of the time.

“As long as I didn’t ride the metros at rush hour and stayed away from the city center and tourist hotspots.”

Mr Welder pointed out that Delhi’s metro has features similar to those in countries like South Korea, Japan, and China.

“Delhi even has platform screen doors on some of its lines, plugs to charge your phone, and designated seats for women and the elderly. These are all things I’ve seen in South Korea, Japan, and China but honestly did not expect to find in India,” he noted.

Social media reacts

As of the last update, the video had garnered over 3.8 million views and thousands of likes and comments with the majority stating that the Western world still had a myopic view of India’s progress.

“When you travel you realise the western propaganda about many things,” said one user while another added: “No drug addicts, no drunken people, nobody pissing or puking, no rats, clean a little crowded, best connectivity! better than any other subway system.”

PM Modi to flag off first Vande Bharat train to Kashmir on this day in April | Union minister shares update

Officials said the train service between Katra and Kashmir was also approved by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.(Waseem Andrabi /Hindustan Times)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first Vande Bharat train to Kashmir from Jammu’s Katra on April 19, marking the completion of the 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail stretch project, Union minister Jitendra Singh informed on Sunday.

The Jammu-Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will initially run from Katra, owing to the renovation works taking place at the Jammu station.

The rail link project was completed last month, officials said, adding that trial runs of the train on the Katra-Baramulla link have also been conducted successfully. The train service between Katra and Kashmir was also approved by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, officials were cited as saying by a news agency PTI report.

PM in Udhampur on April 19

Meanwhile, Union minister Jitendra Singh told reporters, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Udhampur on April 19. He will visit the world’s highest railway bridge and inaugurate it. After that, he will flag off the Vande Bharat train from Katra.”

The inauguration will fulfil the long-awaited demand for a direct rail connectivity to Kashmir. At present, train services are only operational between the valley’s Sangaldan and Baramulla and from Katra, to all across the nation.

The ambitious rail project to link Kashmir began back in 1997. However, it faced several postponements owing to the geological, topographical and meteorological challenges of the region, officials said.

The project, which includes 38 tunnels, spans a total distance of 119 km. Of these, the longest tunnel stretches up to a distance of 12.75 km (Tunnel T-49). This is also India’s largest longest transportation tunnel, the report mentioned.

The rail link project also comprises 927 bridges, covering a total length of 13 kilometres. Among them is the infamous Chenab Bridge, with an overall length of 1,315 metres, arch span of 467 metres and standing 359 metres above the river. Having beaten the Eiffel Tower in height by being 35 metres taller than it, the Chenab Bridge is set to be the world’s highest arch railway bridge.

Six people, including four tourists, were killed and several injured after a huge tree got uprooted following a storm in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district and fell on several vehicles near Gurdwara Manikaran Sahib on Sunday (March 30, 2025), officials said.

Medical teams, police and revenue officials are present at the spot and coordinating the rescue and relief operations, Kullu Sub Divisional Magistrate Vikas Shukla told reporters at the spot.

Among those killed were Jammu and Kashmir resident Reena, who was working in Manikaran, Sameer, a native of Nepal working in the BRO office in Manali, and four tourists — Varsini from Bangalore and Dhinta, Manish and Gulshan — the students of Haryana School of Regional Marketing, said Tehsildar Hari Singh Yadav.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur have expressed deep grief over the incident.

Congress MLA from Kullu Sunder Singh Thakur said six people were killed when a tree opposite the Gurdwara Manikaran Sahib fell on vehicles parked on the road.

The injured have been identified as Bangalore resident Ramesh, his wife Pallavi and son Bhargav; Haryana’s Prachi and Vikram Aacharya and his wife Tumpa Aacharya, they said.

Aacharya, who is from Assam, said the incident occurred around 4:30 when he was waiting for a vehicle along with his family members.

“We had come on Kullu-Manali trip. It was not a landslide and everything happened so quickly that we could not understand what happened,” he added.

The injured have been shifted to a Kullu hospital and are out of danger, the officials said.

A red Lamborghini struck two pedestrians on a footpath adjacent to an under-construction complex in Noida’s Sector 94 this evening.

A video showed the red sports car on the footpath, and workers wearing safety helmets and orange jackets running towards it. They open the door, and a man asks the driver, “stunt zyaada seekh liyo ho?” (Have you learnt a lot of stunts?) “Do you know how many people have died here?” the man said, to which the driver, nonchalantly responds with a question “, Koi mar gaya hai idhar?” (Did anyone die here?)

The police said the workers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and are out of danger.

The driver got out of the Lamborghini, and the man, who was recording the video, was heard saying, “Call the cops, call the cops,” to which the driver said, “I gently pressed the accelerator,” to which the man said, “Did you press it gently?”

Cartagena, Colombia: India has pledged to reduce the health impacts of air pollution by 2040, aligning its actions with the National Clean Air Programme at the concluding session of the second World Health Organisation (WHO) conference on air pollution and health.

Speaking at the conference organised in Colombian city of Cartagena, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Aakash Shrivastava said that the Indian government is “committed to supporting the health sector” and will “promote cleaner cooking energy, particularly for vulnerable populations.” “The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India, is committed to supporting the health sector with actions in alignment with the National Clean Air Programme to reduce the health impacts of air pollution by 2040. We will strengthen air pollution and noncommunicable disease surveillance, promote cleaner cooking energy, particularly for vulnerable populations, and support clinicians in protecting at-risk patients,” Shrivastava said.

However, a report presented to the Rajya Sabha by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment, Forests, and Climate Change revealed that a substantial Rs 858 crore allocated for pollution control in 2024-25 remains unutilised.

This budget represents 27.44 per cent of the Indian ministry’s revised annual allocation.

More than 50 countries, cities and organisations announced major commitments to tackle air pollution and safeguard health at the concluding session of the WHO’s global conference.

Over 700 participants including government representatives, UN agencies, civil society, scientists, and health societies, came together at the conference organised jointly with the government of Colombia by the WHO.

A shared goal to reduce the health impacts by 50 per cent by 2040 was agreed upon to save millions of lives every year, the WHO said.

Urging the participants to respond to a global call to action, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said urgent actions are needed on all fronts to achieve clean air.

He emphasised the need for financial investment in sustainable solutions such as clean energy and sustainable transport, technical enforcement of WHO global air quality guidelines, and social commitment to protect the most vulnerable in the most polluted regions.

Air pollution claims more victims than violence itself and poisoning our air costs lives in silence, said President of Colombia Gustavo Petro, who was also present at the concluding session of the conference.

“This conference reinforces our determination to implement policies for both the environment and the health of our people,” he added.

At the conference, Spain assured that they are “committed to achieve” a carbon-neutral health-care system by 2050 through emission reduction, multi-sectoral collaboration and promoting innovation.

The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland reiterated their commitments to tackling air pollution by chairing the Forum for International Cooperation on Air Pollution (FICAP), setting health-based PM2.5 (fine particulate matter 2.5) targets, and publishing an Air Quality Strategy, which will review existing targets and consider how to increase public awareness on air pollution and address inequalities.

The UK also committed to supporting the Africa Clean Air Programme.

Brazil pledged to strengthen interministerial cooperation, advance key initiatives, establish the National Air Quality Policy, update air quality standards in line based on WHO guidelines as a Legal Framework, and monitor their impact on reducing pollution-related mortality.

China, on the other hand, stated that they are “committed to stronger air quality standards, smarter health protection systems, and enhanced international cooperation.” “The country will continue its efforts to achieve national environmental and climate goals for 2030, 2050, and 2060,” Chinese government official said at the conference.

On behalf of the co-chairs of C40 cities, representing almost 100 of the world’s biggest cities, the Deputy Mayor of London Mete Coban assured supporting WHO’s 2040 target and roadmap.

Coban further called on other governments to expand investments in clean air solutions, strengthen air quality monitoring systems, and recognise cities as key partners in developing and implementing clean air strategies.

100 trees chopped off on Parsik Hills near CIDCO, greens warn of landslides

Pointing out a recent Supreme Court observation that ‘cutting trees is worse than killing human beings’, NatConnect Foundation called for exemplary punishment for those responsible for chopping the Parsik Hill trees. Credit: NatConnect Foundation

Even as the climate change is adversely impacting the state, over a hundred full grown trees have been chopped on the Parsik Hills near City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO) headquarters, environmentalists said and warned of landslides along the Sion-Panvel highway.

Pointing out a recent Supreme Court observation that ‘cutting trees is worse than killing human beings’, NatConnect Foundation called for exemplary punishment for those responsible for chopping the Parsik Hill trees.

The Supreme Court has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for each illegally cut tree, NatConnect Director B N Kumar pointed out to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Upset with state owned CIDCO’s continued apathy towards the environmental care, NatConnect said it will consult legal teams to move the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

This wanton act is bound to cause landslides during the rains and affect people and properties, the environment-focused NGO said.

Kapil Kulkarni of Save Belapur Hills forum said reckless cutting trees on the hills seems to have become a routine affair with the authorities remaining unconcerned. He pointed out that the uprooting of trees on the Belapur Hill has rendered the soil loose which has already caused landslides twice in recent times. Yet, unfortunately, CIDCO is to act.

It is high time that CIDCO realised that climate change is not some science fiction, said.

“On the one hand the government keeps screaming from rooftops that we must plant and save trees, while on the other the city planners do not care for tree protection,” Kumar said.

“It takes at least 10 to 12 years for trees to grow, and they are wiped out in a matter of hours,” he regretted.

Coming as it does close on the heels of the destruction of mangroves and wetlands under CIDCO, the tree chopping reflects the so-called city planner’s negative attitude towards the environment, said activist Jyoti Nadkarni of Kharghar Hills and Wetlands.

NatConnect recalled that the Forest Department has already confirmed to the Human Rights Commission in a different case of tree destruction, that the Parsik Hills come under CIDCO.

Why India’s Relief Mission To Earthquake-Hit Myanmar Was Named ‘Operation Brahma’?

The death toll jumped to more than 1,000 on Saturday as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of the scores of buildings that collapsed

India on Saturday delivered 15 tonnes of relief materials to Myanmar under its ‘Operation Brahma’ that was launched after a powerful earthquake hit the neighbouring country as well as Thailand.
India sent the relief materials to the Myanmarese city of Yangon in a C130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force. The supplies included tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets and essential medicines.
“The first aircraft carrying 15 tons of relief material took off at around 3 am from Hindon Air Force Base. It reached Yangon at around 8 am IST. Our ambassador was there to receive the relief material and thereafter, he handed it over to the Chief Minister of Yangon… Thereafter, two aircraft with search and rescue personnel and equipment, along with canines, were left. One of them has left and the other one is in the process of leaving…” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing on Saturday.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday. The quake’s epicenter was located at 96.07°E, 21.93°N, near the Sagaing region in central Myanmar. A second quake, with a magnitude of 6.4, shook the area 12 minutes later. The tremors were so intense that they reached Bangkok, where residents felt strong shaking.

Why India’s Relief Mission to Myanmar Was Named ‘Operation Brahma’?

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India’s relief mission to Myanmar was named after Lord Brahma. “Today we launched Operation Brahma. Brahma is a god of creation, at a time when we are extending a helping hand to the Government of Myanmar, to the people of Myanmar to rebuild their country in the wake of the devastation. This particular name of the operation has a special meaning,” he said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Indian naval ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid and headed for the port of Yangon.
In a social media post, Jaishankar also said that an 80-member strong search and rescue team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) departed for Myanmar’s capital Nay Pyi Taw. They will assist the rescue operations in Myanmar, he added. India has deployed NDRF abroad on two previous occasions — during the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the 2023 Turkiye quake.

Back-To-Back Earthquakes Claim 1000 Lives

The death toll jumped to more than 1,000 on Saturday as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of the scores of buildings that collapsed when it struck near the country’s second-largest city.

The US Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ centre for geosciences said that depth of earthquakes that jolted Myanmar on Friday was shallow 10 kilometres, according to preliminary reports. Shallower earthquakes tend to cause more damage.

Bringing the forgotten weavers back into the rich tapestry of Indian textiles

New exhibitions are finding inventive ways of documenting India’s textiles

For decades, the gamchha has been a ubiquitous presence on Indian streets.

The traditional scarf, made out of a red-and-white chequered piece of fabric, is used as a towel, pillow, turban, eye mask and even a shoulder drape, mostly by the working classes in West Bengal state and other regions of the country.

But an exhibition in India’s capital Delhi, that concluded two weeks ago, has highlighted the history of the ordinary fabric in a unique way.

Titled Gamchha: From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary, it displayed more than 250 pieces of the short drape from 14 Indian states to show the variations of the scarf-towel across regions.

From white gamchhas from Kerala with pencil-thin coloured borders, Ikat-woven ones from Odisha to Assam’s cotton “gamusa” with red swans and large floral patterns, the interpretations varied from mill-made to hand-woven.

“The show is about speaking up for a social equality symbol that the garment can evoke, even after decades of being left out from the discourse,” said textiles expert Jaya Jaitly, the founder of the Dastkari Haat Samiti, a crafts organisation which presented this show.

The exhibition is part of a series of shows and endeavours, held in the past few months, that seek to redefine our understanding of Indian textiles by taking it in new directions.

From rich woven silks, patterned brocades and intricate chintz to a range of less talked-about textiles, India’s contribution to the global textile industry is unique.

But despite the recognition, including at some of the world’s largest museums, its documentation has been exclusionary and has not kept up with the contemporary practices within the industry.

Until now.

Held by art and craft foundations and curated by researchers in collaboration with private collectors and museums, a number of new exhibitions are sparking something of a renaissance within the industry.

It’s a departure from the more popular, glamourised take on fashion – there are no crowd-pulling Bollywood stars opening the show, or sponsored after-parties. And the venues are often away from big cities.

Instead, the focus is on moving away from urban designers – most of whom are trained in elite colleges in India and abroad – and bring local artisans directly into the fold.

These exhibitions are leading towards “technology-prompted egalitarianism” in the textiles ecosystem, says Ritu Sethi, founder of India’s Crafts Revival Trust. “Because of Instagram and other digital platforms, the anonymity around craftspeople is also shedding off,” she says.

What was once a small community of curators and patrons, has now grown to include experts from various fields, including art and architecture.

Together, they want to take the history of textiles beyond its extolled richness – associated with the grandeur of palaces, and fineries of ceremonial rituals and weddings – to include diverse cloth-making traditions and the people behind it.

The sculpting of a more inclusive contemporary identity is, according to acclaimed designer David Abraham, a homecoming and “a reclamation of pride and value”.

“For Indians, the relationship with textiles is deep-rooted. We express ourselves culturally through colours, weaves and fabric and each of these has a meaning assigned to it. These shows are reaffirming a value in our system,” he says.

Consider these instances. Textiles of Bengal: A Shared Legacy, on display in Kolkata until the end of March, highlights the historic uniqueness of the textile traditions of undivided Bengal.

On display are some never-seen-before fabrics and garments from the 17th Century to now. There are cotton sarees and dhotis (drapes worn by men) that showcase the region’s famed hand weaving traditions such as Jamdani, which continues to be a sought-after fabric even today. Then, there are rare Indo-Portuguese embroideries and some Haji Rumals – embroidered religious cloth once exported to Indonesia and parts of the Arab world as a headdress for men.

The programme includes talks and demonstrations of craft techniques as well as cultural performances – noted dancer Purnima Ghosh performed at one of the sessions dressed in a hand-painted Batik sari. Batik involves drawing designs on fabric with hot liquid wax and a metal object. Artists then use fine brushes to paint dyes within the wax outlines.

“The goal is to bring back attention to Bengal’s shared legacy with Bangladesh, be it textiles, techniques, skills and trades, as well as narrative histories, culture and food, the shifting geographies notwithstanding, “says Darshan Mekani Shah, founder of Weavers Studio Resource Centre, which is holding the exhibition.

Elsewhere, curators are trying to introduce a more nuanced understanding of the history of textiles in India, including the ways in which it has been influenced by larger social realities of caste and class struggles.

Take Pampa: Textiles of Karnataka presented by the Abheraj Baldota Foundation that concluded earlier this month in Hampi, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Among the hundreds of textiles on display there was the embroidery work of the Lambanis, a local nomadic tribe; the Kaudi quilts created by the Siddhi community of the state, which traces its origins to Africa; as well as sacred textiles made for Buddhist monasteries.

Through these depictions, the show tries to tell the histories of the nomadic, tribal and agrarian communities for whom resilient survival was the leitmotif and cloth a way of narrating their marginalised experiences.

And it’s not just all about history – some exhibitions highlight the future of the industry too, as designers find new and innovative ways of imagining traditional textiles in a contemporary idiom.

For instance, the recently concluded Surface: An Exhibition of Indian Embroideries and Surface Embellishment as Art, goes beyond apparel and home decor and spotlights the ways textiles are also being used in paintings, drawings, art installations and sculptures.

The show, organised by Sutrakala Foundation and held around a stepwell in the old city of Jodhpur, featured a set of textile art pieces made by renowned contemporary painter Manisha Parekh.

These shows also play an important role in updating the history of textiles by rigorously documenting it.

“Even some of the country’s biggest fashion institutes do not have an archive of our textiles,” says Lekha Poddar, co-founder of Devi Art Foundation, which has supported nine exhibitions on textiles in the past decade.

The Devi Art Foundation’s recent project, titled, Pehchaan: Enduring Themes in Indian Textiles, has tried to bridge that gap.

Presented in collaboration with Delhi’s National Museum, the show featured a survey of visual and material ideas that have recurred in Indian textiles for more than 500 years, with the oldest exhibit ranging from the 14th and 15th Centuries.

Central government tells Karnataka High Court that censorship claim by Elon Musk’s X is condemnable

Karnataka High Court and X corp

The Central government has taken strong exception to the censorship claims made by Elon Musk owned social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

In an affidavit filed before the Karnataka High Court, the government has said that X’s decision to call the government’s Sahyog portal a ‘censorship portal’ is unfortunate and condemnable.

As per the affidavit, use of such terminology is erroneous and inappropriate and X is raising groundless concerns about censorship.

“It is submitted that by raising a groundless concern of censorship, the petitioner is attempting conflate its position with that of a user who posts content on its platform, which it is not. It is submitted that the use of the said terminology by a worldwide portal like “X” is unfortunate and condemnable,” the government said.

The affidavit was filed in response to X’s plea challenging the creation and use of Sahyog portal, an online platform that allows agencies to issue information-blocking orders without adhering to the safeguards mandated by Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act).

X moved the High Court arguing that the Sahyog portal and related government actions circumvent the statutory framework established by the IT Act and the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in Shreya Singhal v. Union of India.

However, the government has challenged X’s assertion that Section 79 of the IT Act merely exempts the intermediaries from the liability for third-party content and does not empower the government to issue information blocking order in violation of section 69A.

“It is submitted that the ostensible purpose of the present petition appears to the blanket right to claim safe harbour protections without any responsibility on the intermediary themselves. It is submitted that the same is fundamentally flawed and against the basic concept of safe harbour itself,” the government stressed.

According to the government, X, being a foreign entity, does not have fundamental rights guaranteed under Part III of the constitution.

“The only statutory right it has is conferred to it under Section 79 of the IT Act 2000, which does not empower it to solicit hosting or defend removal of the information & data of third party hosted on its platform. It is submitted that the intermediary as per the scheme of the IT Act has no right or locus, at all, to take up the case of its users against any orders passed by the competent authority under section 79 of the Act or else it loses its safe harbour protection.”

The High Court has been told that the safe harbour protection granted by Section 79 of the IT Act is not absolute.

Chennai student dies by suicide in fear of NEET exam; opposition questions DMK’s promise

A 21-year-old student preparing to attend the upcoming National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions reportedly died by suicide on Friday in fear of failing the examination.

Police said the deceased was stressed while preparing for the May 4 exam as she could not clear the examination and secure a medical college admission in her last three attempts, ANI reported.

The student was also attending coaching classes since 2023 at a private coaching centre in Anna Nagar area of Chennai. She had also informed her parents about her struggles ahead of the exam and was reassured that she need not worry, the report said citing an official from Chennai police.

Officials said her father has been running a bakery in Kilambakkam, 40 km from Chennai, after their previous shop in the capital city did not do well.

Police said the student was in a poor state of mind after returning from her coaching class on March 27. On Friday, the student spent most of her time at her father’s bakery and told him that she would return to the shop after some time.

Her father got suspicious as she did not return after a long time and did not respond to calls. Later, she was found dead at her home by her mother, the report added.

The Kalampakkam police have registered a case and are currently investigating the matter. The student’s body was handed over to her family after autopsy and was taken to her native place in Tiruvannamalai district for the final rites.

ADMK questions DMK’s ‘conscience’

Opposition ADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami said the death of another NEET aspirant was “shocking” and questioned the ruling party’s promise ahead of 2021 assembly election to ‘eradicate’ the entrance exam from Tamil Nadu.

“Doesn’t the DMK, which lied and deceived by saying that there would be no NEET exam in Tamil Nadu if it comes to power, bothered by continuing student suicides over NEET?” he asked in a post on X.

The former chief minister also listed a series of NEET suicides since September 2019 and asked what answer does chief minister MK Stalin has to these cases. He also slammed deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for his alleged claim that only his party knows the ‘secret’ to abolish the exam in Tamil Nadu.

“How are you going to wipe away the bloodstains that keep accumulating on your hands from the big lie you told for electoral gains,” Palaniswami asked.

NEET exemption bill

The DMK had passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses Act, 2021, in the legislative assembly in September 2021 seeking to exempt the state from the NEET exam.

MK Stalin had blamed the Centre for delay in granting presidential assent to the bill, which was referred by Tamil Nadu governor RN Ravi as education falls under the concurrent list of the Constitution.

65-Year-Old Man Beheaded, Torso Burnt During ‘Black Magic’ In Bihar: Cops

Four people have been arrested so far. (File)

A 65-year-old man was allegedly killed and his torso was burnt in a ‘Holika Dahan’ fire as part of ‘black magic’ rituals in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, a police officer said.

The deceased has been identified as Yugual Yadav (65), he said.

Police have arrested four persons, including a relative of a ‘tantric’, in connection with the incident, the officer said on Friday, adding that the tantric is absconding.

Aurangabad Superintendent of Police (SP) Ambrish Rahul told reporters on Friday, “Madanpur police station on March 13 received a missing complaint about Yugal Yadav, a resident of Gulab Bigha village. A case was registered and a special investigation team was formed by the police to trace him. During the investigation, officials came to know about the discovery of human bones from the ashes of a Holika Dahan fire in the neighbouring village of Banger.”

Officials inspected the site and found charred human bones and Yugal’s slippers from there.

A dog squad was immediately deployed which took the investigators to the house of Ramashish Rikyasan a ‘tantric. While Ramashish was not present at the house, his relative, Dharmendra, was taken into custody as he gave conflicting statements about the whereabouts of the former, said the SP.

“During interrogation, Dharmendra confessed that he and others had kidnapped and beheaded Yugal as a part of black magic rituals. His torso was then burnt in the Holika Dahan fire. Based on Dharmendra’s statement, police recovered the victim’s severed head from a nearby field,” said the SP.

The official said “Ramashish Rikyasan had conducted the ritual on behalf of Sudhir Paswan, who was seeking a child. Dharmendra also admitted that the group had earlier sacrificed a teenager, whose body was dumped in a well in the same locality.”

A total of four people, including Sudhir Paswan, Dharmendra and two others, have been arrested, police said. A minor boy has also been taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said.

India, US To Hold Sector-Specific Talks For Proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement

The US is pushing India to negotiate a large and grand bilateral trade agreement (Representational)

India and the US have decided to hold sector-specific talks in the coming weeks to finalise the structure of the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA), the government said on Saturday.

The engagement between the two countries came in the backdrop of the USA’s threat to impose reciprocal tariffs on its key trading partners, including India, on April 2.

The decision to hold discussions in the coming weeks follows four days of talks — between senior officers of India and the US — which concluded here on Saturday.

“Sectoral expert-level engagements under the BTA will start virtually in the coming weeks and pave the path for an early negotiating round in person,” the ministry said.

In a statement, the commerce ministry said to realise the shared objective of promoting growth that ensures fairness, national security and job creation, both sides broadly come to an understanding on the next steps towards a mutually beneficial, multi-sector BTA, with the goal to finalise its first tranche by fall (August-September) 2025.

Through the agreement, the two countries are looking to increase market access for their goods, cut tariff and non-tariff barriers and deepen supply chain integration in a mutually beneficial manner, it added.

“Both sides look forward to building on this milestone in the coming months to finalise the BTA, ensuring it aligns with the shared goals of prosperity, resilience, and mutual benefit,” it added.

A team of US officials, headed by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch, was here to finalise the contours and terms of references of the proposed pact, aimed at more than doubling the bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030.

The meeting follows the visit of Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal to Washington from March 4-6 during which he met his US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and subsequent video conferences between the two sides.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very smart man” while emphasising that tariff talks would “work out very well between India and our country”.

The remarks assume significance since Trump has repeatedly criticised the alleged high tariffs charged by India and other countries on American goods. He has announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on its key trading partners, including India, on April 2.

“India is one of the highest tariffing nations in the world. It’s brutal, it’s brutal. They’re very smart. He (Modi) is a very smart man and a great friend of mine. We had very good talks. I think it’s going to work out very well between India and our country,” Trump said.

In a trade pact, two countries either significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them. They also ease norms to promote trade in services and boost investments.

While the US has demanded duty concessions in sectors like certain industrial goods, automobiles, wines, petrochemical products, dairy, agriculture items such as apples, tree nuts, and alfalfa hay; India may look at duty cuts for labour-intensive sectors like textiles.

Indian industry and exporters have asked the government to protect them against the USA’s reciprocal tariffs. They have sought exemption from those tariffs as it would hurt them severely as the US is India’s largest trading partner.

The US is pushing India to negotiate a large and grand bilateral trade agreement while seeking to open the agriculture sector for American businesses.

According to experts, India is unlikely to include dairy and agriculture in trade negotiations as it is a politically sensitive sector.

The US agri exports to India was USD 1.6 billion in 2024. Key exports include almonds (in shell — USD 868 million); pistachios (USD 121 million), apples (USD 21 million), ethanol (ethyl alcohol USD 266 million).

In June 2023, India announced removal of retaliatory import duties on eight US products, including chickpeas, lentils, and apples, which were imposed in 2019 in response to America’s measure to increase tariffs on certain steel and aluminium products.

In 2024, India’s main exports to the US included drug formulations, biological (USD 8.1 billion), telecom instruments (USD 6.5 billion), precious and semi-precious stones (USD 5.3 billion), petroleum products (USD 4.1 billion), gold and other precious metal jewellery (USD 3.2 billion), ready-made garments of cotton including accessories (USD 2.8 billion), and products of iron and steel (USD 2.7 billion).

Imports included crude oil (USD 4.5 billion), petroleum products (USD 3.6 billion), coal, coke (USD 3.4 billion), cut and polished diamonds (USD 2.6 billion), electric machinery (USD 1.4 billion), aircraft, space crafts and parts (USD 1.3 billion), and gold (USD 1.3 billion).

Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar creator, Nandan Nilekani, believes that the energy sector in India will witness the next revolution, akin to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) which has transformed the financial landscape of the country. Mr Nilekani was addressing a crowd of entrepreneurs when he highlighted the widespread implementation of solar panels for homes to enable the public to become both producers and consumers of energy.

“We’re used to buying and storing energy in small amounts, when you are buying LPG cylinder, you’re buying packetised energy. But electricty we always thought of something coming from the grid. Or we buy a generator because we don’t get electricity or burn some oil,” said Mr Nilekani.

“Every home will be an energy producer because they have rooftop solar. Every home will be an energy store because they have an EV battery. So, every home is a producer of energy, seller of energy, and buyer of energy. So, like UPI, you will now be able to buy and sell energy,” he added.

Mr Nilekani said the decentralisation of energy production and consumption might give rise to millions of micro-energy entrepreneurs that will drive economic innovation and growth.

UPI’s success story

UPI, launched less than a decade ago, remains the cornerstone of India’s digital payment ecosystem contributing to 80 per cent of the retail payments across the country. The ease of use, combined with a growing network of participating banks and fintech platforms, has made UPI the preferred mode of real-time payments for millions of users.

Thiruvananthapuram: Even as the much-hyped Mohanlal-starrer, L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, received an overwhelming response in theatres, the film has become a topic of hot debate over its critique of right-wing politics.

The best wishes extended by BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar also seems to have not gone down well with the BJP and Sangh Parivar activists as the film’s content is against their interest.

It is learnt that some leaders raised the issue at the party core committee meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday and Chandrasekhar clarified that he wished success to the film owing to his good relation with Mohanlal.

“Best wishes, Mohanlal Prithviraj Sukumaran n team! I look forward to watching and enjoying #L2E #Empuraan one of these days!,” Chandrasekhar posted on his social media account on Thursday after the film was released with much hype.

However, the film, which has a covert mention of the Gujarat riots is against the interests of the Sangh Parivar. Many BJP-Sangh Parivar activists came out with vehement criticism against the film.

Congress in Kerala said in a post in X that the movie “exposed the Sangh agenda and the division they plan in Kerala to capture control of our vast coastline and two major ports.”

A section of BJP leaders were learnt to have expressed displeasure over the Censor Board at the core committee meeting.

However, BJP state general secretary P Sudheer told reporters that the BJP don’t have any problem with any film. If party members are expressing any opinion about the film on social media, it would be their personal opinion.
