Fauja Singh Hit-And-Run Case: In a major breakthrough in the veteran marathoner Fauja Singh hit-and-run case, the police arrested one Amritpal Singh Dhillon late on Tuesday. Identified as a Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Amritpal Singh was arrested in Kartarpur, his home town.

Amritpal Singh Dhillon had recently returned from Canada and was the one driving the SUV at the time of the accident.

It was also known that Amritpal had purchased the Fortuner from Ravindra Singh of Rurhampur two years ago.

Sources told CNN-News18 that during interrogations, Amritpal Singh admitted that the world’s oldest marathoner, Fauja Singh, was hit by his car in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.

He told the police that the accident happened while he was returning home after selling his phone in Bhogpur on Monday afternoon.

Since the car was moving at a high speed, it hit Singh. Amritpal Singh fled the scene as he got scared, he told the police.

On Tuesday, the police had said that the accused in the case had been identified and that he would be arrested soon.

“We have identified the vehicle from CCTV footage. It is a Punjab-registered Toyota Fortuner. From the accident spot, we recovered some fragments of the vehicle’s headlight. After that, we tracked down the vehicle,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar Rural, Harvinder Singh, told news agency PTI.

“In the CCTV footage, the part of the vehicle, which was found at the accident spot, was missing. It was a left-side headlight fragment. The registration number was readable, which we tracked. It’s a vehicle whose owners have changed more than once (probably resale),” he added.

“Now, our teams will nab the driver soon and recover the vehicle,” the SSP said.

Marathon runner Fauja Singh was 114 and was hit by a vehicle in his native village while walking down the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. He succumbed to his injuries Monday evening.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against an unknown driver under BNS Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), soon after the accident.
