Threat email warns of bomb attack on Golden Temple langar hall, probe underway

The Golden Temple, also known as Darbar Sahib and Shri Harminder Sahib, is the holiest of shrines in Sikhism and is situated in Punjab’s bordering district of Amritsar.

Authorities at Amritsar’s Golden Temple, the holiest shrine for the followers of Sikhism, have received a bomb threat, officials said on Monday. A bomb disposal squad has been rushed to the site.

The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the highest religious governing body of Sikhs, said that it has lodged a complaint after receiving an e-mail threatening to blow up the langar hall (community kitchen hall) of the Golden Temple, which is also known as Darbar Sahib.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the police are investigating the matter, with senior police officers keeping a tab on it. “Cannot say much about this at this point,” Dhami said.

Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that a case has been registered into the matter based on the complaint filed by the SGPC, and an investigation has been launched.

Also, the cyber crime wing of the Punjab Police is actively trying to reach the origin of the threat mail.

Meanwhile, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla took stock of the situation and has urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take immediate action in the matter.

“An email has been received threatening to blow up Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) with RDX. This is not just a threat to a religious site – it’s an attack on peace, faith & humanity,” the Parliamentarian wrote on X.
