Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran does not want to continue fighting and that the decision on whether to end the war now rests with the United States.
Speaking to Fox News in an interview aired on Thursday, Pezeshkian said Iran was willing to resolve its differences with Washington through dialogue rather than further military action.
“When we can resolve issues through dialog, we shouldn’t resort to killing one another. But with the instigations conducted by Israel, they have imposed this war on us,” he said, according to the broadcaster’s translation.
“But we do not wish to continue. It’s America that must choose whether it wants to end this or not.”
Iran Open To An Agreement
Pezeshkian’s comments came a day after he told the UN General Assembly that Iran would not “bend at the knee” to Washington.
Despite his defiant message, the Iranian president said Tehran remained willing to reach an agreement with US President Donald Trump.
He questioned why an earlier ceasefire arrangement had collapsed shortly after being signed. “Why is it that within two weeks after the signing of an agreement, they chose to blow it up?” he said.
Pezeshkian also said Tehran would accept negotiations if the US government was prepared to work “within international legal frameworks”.
“If not, before the (US midterm) elections or after the elections, what difference does it make for us?” he said, referring to the US midterm elections.
