Serena Williams turns to GLP-1 drugs: Is it a new era in weight loss?

For decades, fitness influencers and athletes swore by “clean eating” and intense workouts as the ultimate path to weight loss and peak performance. But Serena Williams’s revelation signals a potential cultural shift – are we moving into an era where science, and not sweat alone, drives results?

Former tennis champion Serena Williams revealed that after becoming a mother, even her years of intense training couldn’t help her return to the body she once had and eventually resorted to taking GLP-1 drugs.

“I had been the ultimate super-athlete, always in competition and being super-healthy my entire life, but I just could never get back to where I needed to be,” Williams told Vogue magazine. After giving birth to her second daughter in 2023, she turned to a new option – GLP-1 medication.

“My whole life is being in the gym, working out, running, training, HIIT training, dancing, every single thing you can think of. I would always get to a certain point on the scale, but I could never get below that. That’s when I decided that it was time to try something different and got on the GLP-1 with Ro,” she added.

WHAT ARE GLP-1 DRUGS?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) medicines are a new class of drugs originally developed for people with type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking a natural hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar and appetite. In simple terms, they make you feel full faster, reduce cravings, and slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach.

The result? You end up eating less, which helps with weight loss.

Williams started taking a GLP-1 drug called Zepbound, through the telehealth company Ro, with which she is now collaborating. Interestingly, her husband Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, is an investor and board member at the same company.
