Serena Williams turns to GLP-1 drugs: Is it a new era in weight loss?

  • August 23, 2025

For decades, fitness influencers and athletes swore by “clean eating” and intense workouts as the ultimate path to weight loss and peak performance. But Serena Williams’s revelation signals a potential cultural shift – are we moving into an era where science, and not sweat alone, drives results?

Former tennis champion Serena Williams revealed that after becoming a mother, even her years of intense training couldn’t help her return to the body she once had and eventually resorted to taking GLP-1 drugs.

“I had been the ultimate super-athlete, always in competition and being super-healthy my entire life, but I just could never get back to where I needed to be,” Williams told Vogue magazine. After giving birth to her second daughter in 2023, she turned to a new option – GLP-1 medication.

“My whole life is being in the gym, working out, running, training, HIIT training, dancing, every single thing you can think of. I would always get to a certain point on the scale, but I could never get below that. That’s when I decided that it was time to try something different and got on the GLP-1 with Ro,” she added.

WHAT ARE GLP-1 DRUGS?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) medicines are a new class of drugs originally developed for people with type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking a natural hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar and appetite. In simple terms, they make you feel full faster, reduce cravings, and slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach.

The result? You end up eating less, which helps with weight loss.

Williams started taking a GLP-1 drug called Zepbound, through the telehealth company Ro, with which she is now collaborating. Interestingly, her husband Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, is an investor and board member at the same company.

A SHIFT IN THE FITNESS WORLD?

For decades, fitness influencers and athletes swore by “clean eating” and intense workouts as the ultimate path to weight loss and peak performance.

But Serena’s revelation signals a potential cultural shift – are we moving into an era where science, and not sweat alone, drives results?

The rise of GLP-1 drugs highlights a new reality: no matter how disciplined or athletic someone may be, biology often has the final say. For many, medication is becoming the missing piece in the weight loss puzzle.

WHY LIFESTYLE ALONE DOESN’T ALWAYS WORK

For years, we’ve been told that the secret to weight loss is simple: eat less, move more. But doctors now know that it’s not so straightforward.

“Sometimes our own body works against us. Hunger hormones, slow metabolism, family history – all play a role,” explains Dr. Manoj Agarwal, Endocrinologist at Shalby Hospital SG, Ahmedabad.

That’s where GLP-1 medicines come in. They don’t replace healthy habits, but they support them by controlling appetite and balancing hormones.

“Lifestyle is still the backbone. But for some people, especially those struggling despite their best efforts, GLP-1 drugs can change the game,” says Dr. Agarwal.

THE RISKS AND THE RED FLAGS

Like any medicine, GLP-1 therapy is not risk-free. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and digestive discomfort, especially in the early days.

Most people adjust with time, but there are important safety warnings. “Anyone with a family history of certain neuroendocrine cancers should avoid these drugs. That’s why medical supervision is non-negotiable,” warns Dr. Agarwal.

Celebrities across the world are reportedly turning to GLP-1 drugs. But experts stress that they are not magic pills. Without proper nutrition and lifestyle changes, the results won’t last.
