Owning a Light Lamp Didn’t Help Older Adults. Using It Early Did

An aging parent who spends the day in a dim living room, curtains half-drawn, lamps left off until evening, might be quietly working against their own health. A new study of 202 older adults across three European cities found that a cheap, store-bought light therapy lamp was linked to steadier daily activity patterns, but mainly among people who turned it on earlier in the morning. Wait too long, and the pattern faded.

Published in the Journal of Pineal Research, the study followed men and women between ages 63 and 92 living independently in Amsterdam, Bologna, and Tartu, Estonia. Scientists already knew from lab studies that bright light can help older adults. What they wanted to find out was whether people would actually use a light lamp the right way on their own, at home, without anyone watching over them, closing the gap between what works in a lab and what works in real life.

Timing turned out to matter more than simply owning a lamp. People who turned on their lamp before around 10:34 a.m., the midpoint of when participants in this study started their sessions, had less fragmented, more consolidated activity throughout the day than those who started later, a pattern that held up even after researchers accounted for whether someone was naturally a morning or evening person. People who also switched their lamp off earlier in the evening, before about 5:45 p.m., showed that same steadiness in their rest patterns.

Aging Eyes Let in Far Less Blue Light Than Younger Ones

As people pass age 50, their eyes change in ways that quietly cut down how much light reaches the cells that help set the body’s internal clock. The lens clouds a bit, the pupil shrinks, and fewer of the light-detecting cells that support alertness and sleep timing stay active. The eye’s ability to let in blue light, the type most important for feeling awake and keeping the body’s rhythm on track, drops sharply between childhood and old age. Add in modern apartment living, where people often spend most daylight hours indoors, and older adults can end up starved for light even when the sun is shining outside.

Earlier research had already shown that carefully timed light exposure in controlled settings can help older adults sleep better and feel more alert. What hadn’t been tested was whether ordinary people, left on their own, would use a light lamp in a way that actually delivers those benefits at home.

Just Over Half of Lamp Users Stuck With Daily Use

Researchers recruited 202 people from neighborhoods in Amsterdam, Bologna, and Tartu, areas chosen partly because residents there had more nighttime electric light exposure and lower average incomes, places where light-related health problems might hit hardest. Participants wore wrist activity trackers and small light sensors for two weeks to establish a baseline, then were split randomly into two groups. Ninety-eight people received a light therapy lamp to place in whatever room they spent the most time in, with instructions to turn it on within an hour of waking, keep it running for at least two hours during the day, and turn it off at least four hours before bedtime. The other 93 participants kept their normal routines with no lamp. After twelve weeks, everyone repeated the two-week tracking period so researchers could compare before-and-after results.

Only 52 of the 98 people given a lamp reported using it daily during follow-up, a reminder that even a simple change doesn’t guarantee people will stick with it. Looking at everyone in the lamp group versus everyone in the no-lamp group, regardless of when or how often they used it, researchers found no overall difference between the two. The value of the lamp wasn’t really about having it. It was about when people chose to use it.

More Natural Daylight Meant Better Sleep, Even Before Any Lamp Was Used

Even before anyone received a lamp, the baseline data told an interesting story. People who naturally spent more time in bright daylight were more active and reported better sleep quality than those who got less daylight exposure, independent of whether they later used a lamp at all. Participants with conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or heart disease also had measurably lower daily light exposure than those without those conditions.
