Delhi plans 300 police posts under flyovers, inside pedestrian subways

  • July 28, 2026

Delhi is planning nearly 300 police posts under flyovers and inside pedestrian subways. The move aims to improve safety while putting underused public spaces to better use.

The Delhi government is moving ahead with a plan to set up police posts under flyovers and inside pedestrian subways to improve safety and make better use of public infrastructure, officials said on Monday.

The proposal is part of a wider plan under which nearly 300 police posts may come up across flyovers, foot overbridges and pedestrian subways in the city.

Officials said the government has already conveyed its approval in principle and is now waiting for Delhi Police to complete the next steps.

“We have plans to set up the police posts and a confirmation has also been given to Delhi police regarding the project; now we are waiting for them to complete other formalities,” a senior government official said.

The Public Works Department, which maintains around 106 flyovers, 115 foot overbridges and nearly 70 subways, will build the proposed police posts for Delhi Police.

Officials said Delhi Police had first sent a proposal for about 50 posts, and after an assessment, the government found the project feasible.

After approving that proposal, the government decided to expand the scope of the plan. “While we have approved that proposal, going further, we plan to cover all road assets like flyovers, pedestrian subways, and FOBs; approximately 300 police posts will be set up,” the official added.

PWD CONSIDERING COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS LATER
In a later phase, the PWD is also considering allowing commercial establishments inside pedestrian subways, though that proposal has not yet been approved. Officials said the aim of the project is to give subway users a sense of security.

Separately, in July last year, a decision was taken on the ‘adopt a flyover’ project under the public-private partnership model to improve cleanliness and maintenance of road infrastructure. The government has signed agreements with private companies for work under the initiative.
