Congress’ Ibobi Singh criticises Centra, Manipur govt for administrative failures

  • July 20, 2026

Okram Ibobi Singh accused the BJP-led Centre and Manipur government of failing on education, governance and law and order. He demanded accountability for repeated paper leaks and justice in the killing of six Naga civilians.

The Congress leader also criticised the functioning of the state government.

Former Manipur Chief Minister and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Okram Ibobi Singh on Sunday criticised the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state, alleging failures in education, governance and law and order, while calling for accountability over recurring examination paper leaks and the killings of six Naga civilians.

Addressing a press conference in Imphal, Ibobi referred to the recent protest led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi against recurring examination paper leaks. He alleged that the BJP-led NDA government had failed to protect the interests of students and ensure the integrity of the country’s examination system.

Claiming that more than 150 examination papers, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), had been leaked since the BJP came to power at the Centre in 2014, Ibobi said repeated irregularities had adversely affected students and undermined public confidence in competitive examinations.

‘GOVT CANNOT ESCAPE RESPONSIBILITY’

He also alleged that several students had died by suicide due to frustration stemming from examination-related controversies.

“The government cannot escape its responsibility. Those accountable, including the Union Education Minister, should accept moral responsibility and resign,” he said.

Describing education as the backbone of society, Ibobi expressed concern that Manipur does not have a full-fledged Education Minister. He said the absence of a dedicated minister reflected poorly on the state’s governance and raised questions about the government’s priorities.

The Congress leader also criticised the functioning of the state administration, alleging that the Council of Ministers had not been expanded despite the formation of the new government. He claimed that Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh was handling more than 20 departments, arguing that such an arrangement could affect administrative efficiency and governance.
