Tata Trusts Disbursed Rs 1,556 Crore in FY26, Noel Tata Says Emphasis On Institution-Building

  • October 19, 2026

Tata Trusts disbursed Rs 1,556.31 crore in FY26, focusing on establishing a network of 40 to 50 not-for-profit hospitals funded by patients who can afford care.

Noel Tata

Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata said the Trusts will put more weight on building institutions directly rather than only funding them. In the Trusts’ FY26 annual report, Noel said the need was “not simply to support an existing effort, but to build institutions and models that can become enduring public assets in their own right”. He did not directly refer to the governance and strategic differences between the Trusts and Tata Sons.

Noel cast the shift as a return to the founders’ purpose. “Our founders did not set out to build the largest group of companies. They believed that enterprise carried with it a responsibility to society, and that the true measure of progress was an improvement in the quality of people’s lives,” he said.

Tata Trusts disbursed Rs 1,556.31 crore:

According to Tata Trusts Annual Report, in the year to March 2026, Tata Trusts disbursed Rs 1,556.31 crore and is now working toward a network of 40 to 50 not-for-profit general hospitals, Chairman Noel Tata said in the Trusts’ Annual Report for 2025-26.

Tata said patients who can afford to pay would help fund care for those who cannot. The report gives no investment figure, locations, or timeline for the hospitals.

Noel Tata said the Trusts want to build institutions and models that become “enduring public assets” and be judged on what changes as a result of their work. He wrote that measuring philanthropy by people reached or money spent is no longer enough.

According to the Annual Report, institutional grants and direct project spending came in at Rs 1,353.32 crore, and individual grants at Rs 202.99 crore.

Further, rural upliftment took the largest share at Rs 457.62 crore, followed by education (Rs 270.26 crore), cancer care (Rs 178.46 crore), institutions (Rs 169.31 crore) and healthcare (Rs 105.97 crore).

Water and sanitation received Rs 59.04 crore and nutrition Rs 57.64 crore. Individual grants were mainly medical (Rs 143.30 crore) and education (Rs 59.38 crore).
