‘Bright Shine After 3 Days’: Chennai Skies Clear as Cyclone Ditwah Weakens – But Will the Rain Stop?

  • December 4, 2025

Cyclone Ditwah weakened to a low-pressure area over North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Chennai faces a yellow alert with rain likely all week, featuring partly cloudy skies, showers, thunderstorms, and lightning.

Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and surrounding regions. However, Chennai residents are still facing its influence. The entire state of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, is currently on a yellow alert for two days. This means the city will experience more rain. However, the city saw a bit clearer sky after three days, allowing sunshine to appear.

According to the IMD, the depression, which is the remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, located over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts, has moved slowly in a southwestward direction. By 0530 hrs IST on 3 December 2025, it had weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and surrounding regions.

“The Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm #Ditwah) over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North #Tamil_Nadu-#Puducherry coasts moved slowly southwestwards and weakened into a #Well_Marked_Low Pressure area over North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts and neighbourhood at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 03rd December 2025. It is very likely to continue to move southwestwards slowly across north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and weaken further into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours,” said the IMD in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The city is under yellow alert for just two days. However, the IMD forecast has predicted rain for the entire week.

Chennai Weather Forecast

  • 4 December – The day will have a partly cloudy sky with chances of moderate rain or thunderstorms. These conditions suggest a mix of sunshine and showers, with occasional heavy bursts and lightning.
  • 5 December – Expect partly cloudy skies again, accompanied by the possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms. The weather is likely to alternate between dry spells and wet periods, with some thunder and lightning activity.
  • 6 December – Partly cloudy skies will persist, with a likelihood of moderate rain or thunderstorms during the day. The atmosphere may be unstable, leading to occasional rain showers accompanied by thunder and lightning.
  • 7 December – The forecast shows partly cloudy skies with potential for moderate rain or thunderstorms. Intervals of rain and sunshine are expected, with the chance of thunder and lightning strikes.
