Woman posing as PMO official arrested after Bengal minister grows suspicious

A woman allegedly posing as a PMO official met West Bengal minister Ajay Poddar at Nabanna. Police are now probing how she gained entry and whether she approached other officials.

The woman, identified as Dr Akangsha Vidyarthi, was arrested from her residence in central Delhi on Thursday.

West Bengal Police arrested a woman who allegedly posed as a senior Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) official to gain access to the state secretariat Nabanna.

The woman, identified as Dr Akangsha Vidyarthi, allegedly sought an appointment with West Bengal PWD Minister Ajay Poddar earlier this week. During the meeting, however, the minister became suspicious of her “irrelevant statements”, according to police.

The minister’s office subsequently sought to verify Vidyarthi’s credentials and found that her claim of being associated with the PMO was false. A police complaint was then filed, leading to a case at Shibpur police station in Howrah under Sections 319(2), 204 and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

By then, Vidyarthi had left Kolkata and travelled to Delhi by flight.

A team of Howrah Police later reached Delhi and arrested her from her residence in central Delhi on Thursday. She was subsequently brought to Howrah on transit remand.
