National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary had a narrow escape after a gunman opened fire on them at a marriage function in Jammu on Wednesday night. Abdullah, 88, survived the alleged assassination attempt as the shooter fired at him from behind when he was leaving a marriage function at the posh Greater Kailash area on the outskirts of Jammu.

According to party MLA Ajaz Ahmed Jan, when Abdullah and others were departing from the function, the accused came from behind and placed a revolver on his back. He then fired his shot, which he missed.

“The people who were with Doctor Sahib’s (Farooq Abdullah) security people caught him in a moment, made him fall, pressed him, and, with great difficulty, we took the pistol from him. Then we left from there and came back home,” Jan said.

“It is a very unfortunate part that the gun reached inside the wedding, but let’s be thankful that everyone is fine. Farooq Abdullah is absolutely fine. He has gone to his room to rest,” Jan said.

Who is Kamal Singh Jamwal?

The accused, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, was arrested and told police that he had been waiting for an opportunity to target Abdullah for the past 20 years. Jamwal was found in an inebriated condition and managed to fire one shot before he was disarmed and grounded by the alert personnel, the officials said, adding no one was injured in the firing. He was overpowered by two officers of security wing of J&K Police — an inspector and a sub-inspector — when he approached Abdullah from behind with a pistol and opened fire at him.

Another eyewitness, Rakesh Singh, who was also present at the function, said there was no security or police present during the firing incident.
