Legendary playback singer Suman Kalyanpur, whose soulful voice defined an era of Indian music, passed away on May 31, 2026 at her residence in Mumbai. She was 89. According to author and close associate Mangala Khadilkar, the veteran singer breathed her last around 8 pm at her Lokhandwala home due to age-related ailments.

Khadilkar, who authored the acclaimed Marathi biography Suman Sugandh, revealed that Kalyanpur spent her final days surrounded by the music that made her a household name. “She spent her last days listening to her own songs,” Khadilkar told PTI. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable journey that spanned more than six decades and left an indelible mark on Indian music.
A voice that defined generations
Known for her melodious vocals and classical finesse, Suman Kalyanpur earned immense admiration across languages and genres. Her unforgettable Hindi songs, including Shammi Kapoor, Mumtaz’s Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche, Shashi Kapoor’s Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhin Se, and Sadhana’s Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye among many others, remain beloved by music lovers.
She was also celebrated for evergreen Marathi classics such as Ketakichya Bani Tithe, Sang Kadhi Kalnar Tula, and Nimbonyachya Jhadamaghe. During Bollywood’s golden era, Kalyanpur lent her voice to numerous chartbusters, creating melodies that continue to resonate with audiences decades later.
Kalyanpur won several national and film awards; she enjoyed a distinguished career that extended beyond Hindi cinema. She recorded songs in Marathi, Bengali, Odia, and several other regional languages.
