As the 2026 midterm elections approach, concerns arise over Trump’s impact on Republican candidates, with polling indicating that many believe his presidency complicates their chances of success.

US President Donald Trump on Monday posted an image on Truth Social showing the United States covering all of continental North America and Greenland, in his latest provocative message about the country’s territorial footprint. The post has drawn criticism from opponents as the US continues its trade dispute with Canada.
“He’s f*king insane,” the group Republicans Against Trump wrote on X.
Foreign policy scholar Kurt Taylor Gaubatz also criticised the president’s recent social media activity, writing on Bluesky: “I propose all news sources just put a small box in the corner labeled ‘crazy things Trump did yesterday’ and we put his Truth postings and hair changes and the like in that box so they don’t distract from the everyday stories about how he is undermining America, democracy, and the world.”
Conservative supporters of Trump, however, celebrated the latest post.
Commentator Eric Daugherty wrote on X: “LMFAO!”, adding that Trump was going “full North American empire mode” and that “Democrats will be filing Articles of Impeachment over this, worrying that he’s going to launch mass invasions.”
The White House has not publicly explained the meaning of the image. The Independent said it had contacted the White House for comment.
Trump’s Changing Map
Trump has previously shared similar images, apparently to provoke critics and political rivals. But his administration has also taken steps to alter US place names.
Last week, amid the trade dispute with Canada, the president renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America on US maps. Last year, his administration renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
Trump has also floated changing the name of New Mexico to New America.
The latest post comes as the administration pursues a more expansive foreign policy than during Trump’s first term, despite his previous criticism of foreign entanglements.
The US has waged war with Iran, deposed Venezuela’s leader and taken over its oil industry, attacked alleged drug boats in the Caribbean, threatened to invade Greenland and imposed strong economic pressure on Cuba.
The moves have prompted concern among some traditional US allies.
Canada has responded to US trade measures and said the current US-dominated international order is coming to an end and is “not coming back”, arguing that new alliances will be needed.
