The meeting may signal a shift in Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration, emphasizing America’s leadership in artificial intelligence

US President Donald Trump is due to host Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday, according to a report by Axios. The meeting will be the first one-on-one encounter between Trump and Amodei, and comes after months of tensions between the artificial intelligence company and the administration.
The dinner is also expected to come ahead of a meeting between Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and leading AI executives at the White House on Tuesday.
Several prominent technology leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Google’s Sundar Pichai, attended a state dinner with Trump last week. Amodei was notably absent because of a scheduling conflict.
According to one source, Trump subsequently invited the Anthropic chief personally to Sunday’s dinner.
Relations Were Strained
Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration has been unsettled throughout the year, with periods of apparent improvement followed by renewed tensions.
Amodei has also attracted wider attention because of his views on AI safety and his involvement in the effective altruism movement. He was mocked on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live over his personality and views on artificial intelligence.
Last week, Trump allies circulated talking points with the White House highlighting Amodei’s role in the effective altruism movement and what they described as unusual aspects of it, Axios reported.
Earlier this year, some officials had advised against a one-on-one meeting between Amodei and Trump. “Dario’s a little too weird” for Trump, one senior administration official told Axios at the time.
The meeting comes as the Trump administration places increasing emphasis on maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence.
