US President Donald Trump claimed Saturday that Iran is willing to open the Strait of Hormuz because it has “no money coming in” due to Washington’s naval blockade of Iranian ports.
“And what they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait. You know why? Because they’re dying. You know why they’re dying? Because they have no money coming in, because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait. So they outsmarted themselves”, Trump told reporters.

He said the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz created a problem for the world, adding the US military targeted Iran’s economy by putting “the greatest blockade ever” on the country’s ports.
“They said, ‘Let’s close it and cause a problem for the world.’ And then I came along, and we put up the greatest blockade ever in military history. It’s a wall of steel, and we put it up, and guess what? They don’t have any money now, because they wanted to close the strait and I said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to close it on you, but everybody else is able to use it.'”
The president’s remarks came a day after he revealed that he had rejected the proposal put forth by Iran through Qatari mediators. Tehran had announced its peace proposal during the UN General Assembly in New York earlier this week.
Following this, Iran asserted Sunday that only diplomacy could resolve its conflict with the US and Israel, adding that it was still waiting for an official response on the peace proposal to open the vital Strait of Hormuz and halt the fighting in the region.
The war in West Asia began on February 28 after the US and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran, killing its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
