An explosion and fire at a Canadian military base in Alberta have raised fears of significant casualties, with emergency crews responding to the incident amid strong winds that are spreading a large fire in the surrounding area.

Dane Lloyd, a member of parliament representing a constituency west of Edmonton, said he was hearing reports of “significant casualties” following the incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright on Saturday evening.

In a social media post, Lloyd urged people to pray for the soldiers and their families. The number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the explosion have not been confirmed.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was in close contact with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith as emergency crews dealt with the situation. “A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta,” Carney wrote on social media shortly after 18:00 local time. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.”

Smith described the fire as “significant and tragic”, adding that it was affecting many military personnel.

The Municipal District of Wainwright said high winds were causing the fire to spread rapidly through the area. Emergency responders were working to “protect people, property and critical infrastructure”, it said in a social media update.

As of 19:30 local time, no evacuation order had been issued for residents.

Officials said the fire had crossed the military base’s perimeter fence earlier on Saturday and was being managed south of Wainwright. A separate active fire remained burning south of Township Road 44-0.
