Russia launched a combined drone and ballistic missile attack on Kyiv overnight, triggering multiple fires, damaging residential and commercial buildings.

Russian forces launched a large-scale combined drone and ballistic missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, late on Wednesday and into the early hours of Thursday, setting off multiple fires, damaging buildings, and prompting residents to seek shelter as officials warned the assault could unfold in several waves.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the overnight strike sparked a fire on the roof of a hotel in the central Shevchenkivskyi district. Images shared online showed flames burning across the top of the CityHotel Residence as firefighters and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
“In the Shevchenkivskyi district, in the center of the capital, there is also a fire – on the roof of a hotel. Rescuers and firefighters are on site. The attack on the capital continues. Stay in shelters!” Klitschko said.

Klitschko also reported that the roof of a three-story non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district caught fire during the attack. Later, he said rescuers were responding to the collapse of a nine-story apartment building where people were believed trapped, while firefighters battled blazes at multiple locations across the city.
The head of Kyiv’s Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said the hotel fire was caused by the drone strike. He added that debris from intercepted drones also fell near a private home in the Desnianskyi district, though no fire was reported there.
After the initial drone assault, Ukrainian authorities warned of a ballistic missile threat. At about 1:53 AM local time, Ukraine’s Air Force said Russian ballistic missiles were approaching Kyiv from the north, prompting officials to urge residents to remain in shelters.
According to local authorities, Russian drones entered Kyiv from several directions, raising concerns that the assault could unfold in several stages. Explosions echoed across the capital as air defense systems engaged incoming targets, with many residents taking refuge in underground metro stations carrying sleeping bags, children, and pets.
Klitschko later said five healthcare workers were wounded in the Shevchenkivskyi district, one of them critically. Officials also reported damage to a residential building and a medical facility as emergency crews worked across the city.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence indicated Russia had been preparing a major overnight strike and said he was cutting short his visit to Dublin.
