THOUSANDS of Cristiano Ronaldo fans mobbed an unsuspecting bride after wrongly believing she was the footballer’s fiancée Georgina Rodriguez.
The Portuguese icon and his long-term partner have been tipped to finally tie the knot in a lavish Portuguese ceremony but excited supporters mistakenly crashed the wrong wedding on Saturday.
More than 2,000 fans had gathered outside a cathedral in Madeira hoping Ronaldo and Rodriguez would have a surprise wedding after dozens of media reports.
But they were left stunned when they realised they had been waiting for the wrong couple.
Instead, Portuguese pair Fabio Ramos and Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira were the ones walking down the aisle.
Family and friends of the real bride and groom reportedly had to fight their way through the huge crowd as they waited excitedly for the football icon to arrive.
One member of the wedding party said: “Fabio is not Cristiano Ronaldo. This is all crazy. We did not expect anything like this.”
“I don’t think he is going to forget his wedding.”
The atmosphere reached fever pitch when a grey Rolls-Royce pulled into the square to drop Fatima off for the ceremony.
Hundreds of fans immediately swarmed the luxury car, with phones held aloft as they scrambled to capture a glimpse of the woman they believed was Georgina.
One member of the wedding party desperately tried to set the record straight, shouting: “This is not Georgina!” as the crowd surged forward.
Eventually, Fatima’s bridesmaids managed to clear a path through the mob, allowing her to make her way towards the cathedral entrance.
Father Marcos Gonçalves, the parish priest of the Cathedral who married the couple, said: “I can tell you that they are nothing to do with Cristiano Ronaldo.
“This is the only wedding taking place here today.”
The priest added that he did not believe the footballer had booked the venue for a wedding any time soon.
Dozens of fans wearing No. 7 Ronaldo shirts packed the square outside Madeira Cathedral, convinced the superstar was about to marry Georgina at the venue.
Rumours of Ronaldo’s impending nuptials proved to be wide of the mark.
The 41-year-old Portuguese football legend and his 32-year-old model fiancée Georgina had been widely tipped to tie the knot at the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Funchal.
