The England Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday (August 15) appointed Jacob Bethell as the T20I captain for the three-match series against Ireland. An all-format player since his debut, Bethell will lead the team in place of Harry Brook. The England white-ball captain will take a break after the South Africa series. Bethell will create history and break England’s 136-year-old record when he makes his captaincy debut against Ireland. He will lead the two-time T20 World Champions in three T20Is to be played on September 17, 19 and 21 in Dublin.

“Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads. The series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage,” England’s chief selector, Luke Wright, said.

Jacob Bethell to become youngest England captain
Bethell will break a 136-year-old record and become the youngest to lead England in international cricket. Monty Bowden presently holds the record for being the youngest England captain. Bowden, who played two Tests, led England in his second game against South Africa in 1889. Bowden played 86 first-class matches. Bowden was 23 years and 144 days old when he made his captaincy debut.
Jacob Bethell’s age
Bethell is 21 days and 297 days old at present. He will be 21 years and 329 days old on the day of his captaincy debut. Bethell made his T20I debut against Australia in September 2024 and is set to lead the team just a year later. He is capped in all three formats. Former England white-ball captain Jos Buttler will play under Bethell’s captaincy. He captained England to a title win in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
