Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on Saturday (December 20) to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate national highway projects at Ranaghat in Nadia district. He will also address a public gathering on the occasion.

PM Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of two National Highway projects worth around Rs 3,200 crores, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. He will also inaugurate the 66.7 km-long 4-Laning of the Barajaguli – Krishnanagar Section of NH-34 in Nadia.

The projects will serve as a vital connecting link between Kolkata and Siliguri, as per the statement. They will help to reduce travel time by approximately 2 hours, ensuring faster and smoother movement of vehicles for unhindered traffic flow, reduced vehicle operating costs, and improve connectivity between Kolkata and other neighbouring districts of West Bengal, as well as with neighbouring countries.

Modi’s visit comes as West Bengal is gearing up for Assembly elections in 2026, with tensions running high between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). These tensions have particularly escalated after the Election Commission conducted the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, removing around 58 lakh names from the draft voter list.

After concluding his visit in West Bengal, PM Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Assam on Saturday, where he will undertake a walkthrough and inaugurate the New Terminal Building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport.
