India–Bhutan Hydropower Partnership Strengthened

In a major milestone for bilateral cooperation, PM Modi and Bhutan’s King jointly inaugurated the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, marking the start of electricity exports from Bhutan to India. The two leaders also agreed to resume work on the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project, which will become Bhutan’s largest hydroelectric venture once completed.

India has extended a ₹40 billion concessional line of credit to support Bhutan’s energy initiatives and welcomed greater participation of Indian companies in the hydropower sector. Both sides expressed satisfaction over progress under the Joint Vision on Energy Partnership, signed in 2024.
