Gunfire rang out early Saturday morning near the federal prison facility in Texas where Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell is being held.

Officers from the Federal Bureau of Prisons heard the gunshots outside of Federal Prison Camp Bryan before responding to the gunfire, reportedly engaging with the suspected shooter, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Randilee Giamusso.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Saturday near the prison camp in Byron. No staff or guards were injured during the shooting, according to the BOP. It is believed that the shooting stemmed from a block party near the prison where two rival gangs exchanged gunfire, Giamusso said.

Giamusso said the investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information was available. It is unclear if any arrests were made stemming from the shooting.

“We are deeply grateful to our staff and law enforcement partners for the rapid and professional response,” the BOP said.

Authorities said Saturday’s shooting was not related to Maxwell’s incarceration at the facility. Maxwell is serving a 20 year prison sentence after she was convicted in 2021 of luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein.

She was transferred to Federal Prison Camp Bryan earlier this month in a move that was met with swift backlash from critics who said she should not be held at a minimum security prison, given her sex offense charges.

A senior law enforcement official told NBC News that shortly after she was transferred to the facility from her previous federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida, the prison said it was ramping up security measures in response to her arrival.

Daisy Perez, who lives across the street from the prison, told NBC News she heard the shots while home with her children.
