Opposition March To Supreme Court On Monday; CJI Turns Down Rahul, Kharge’s Meeting Request

Opposition parties will march to the Supreme Court on Monday over alleged electoral irregularities. Ahead of the march, CJI Surya Kant rejected Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge’s request for a meeting to submit a memorandum.

Opposition’s ‘Chalo Dilli’ march to the Supreme Court on Monday

Opposition parties are set to march to the Supreme Court on Monday against the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Congress called it “Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy” and said they would converge at 1.30 PM at Connaught Place-Barakhamba Road junction. Ahead of the planned march, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has not agreed to meet the Opposition leaders. Leaders of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge — had written to the CJI for a meeting with him between 4 and 5 PM on Monday to hand over a memorandum, demanding an end to ‘vote chori’, CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, halting of SIR and switching back to paper ballot.

CJI Says No Meeting With LoPs On Monday

According to sources, the CJI has denied the request for a meeting on Monday. “Response of Hon’ble CJI to the letter received from Leaders of Opposition has been sent in their official mail,” a source told Times Now.

The CJI’s office cited the matter’s pendency before the Supreme Court on the judicial side, with CJI Surya Kant himself heading the Bench hearing it, they said. The office also conveyed that no directions could be issued following an administrative meeting on the issue.

The sources said Gandhi and Kharge could approach the court by filing a petition if they wished to be heard on the matter.

Opposition Announces ‘Chalo Delhi’ March

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that the march to the Supreme Court would be by Indians united beyond parties, gender, caste, community and state. “Yesterday, the nation’s young came out in Delhi to peacefully protest. They came with love in their hearts, not hatred or anger. They were beaten, both by cops and BJP goons. This is not the India we want.”

“Tomorrow, we will march to the Supreme Court as Indians, united beyond party, gender, caste, community and state. Youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, all those who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India, will walk with us,” he said in his post.
