Former President Barack Obama has criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran, arguing that the United States may now be in a weaker position despite the immense costs of the conflict.
Speaking in an interview with NBC’s TODAY show ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, Obama said the war had consumed vast resources, strained the military and resulted in significant loss of life without producing a clear strategic gain.
“We’ve now fought a war, spent billions and billions of dollars, put enormous strain on our military, and a lot of people have died,” Obama said. “It feels like we’re back where we were before we started the war, except maybe a little bit worse off.”
Welcomes Ceasefire, But Raises Questions
Obama said he was encouraged by the recently announced ceasefire and expressed hope that it would hold, but questioned the reasoning behind the conflict in the first place.
His comments came days after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities and creating a framework for future negotiations.
The agreement, signed by President Trump, establishes a 60-day window for negotiators to pursue a more permanent settlement between the two countries.
