A high-level committee meeting was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday following the killing of Manipuri artist Chongtham Vikram Singh in Delhi. The meeting was chaired by the Joint Secretary, North East Division, MHA, and attended by representatives of MHA, Delhi Police, Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), NCERT and other concerned states and government agencies.
The meeting stressed the need for the strictest possible action in the murder case and discussed concrete measures to prevent similar incidents involving people from the Northeast.
A series of measures aimed at improving the safety and security of people from the Northeast living in metropolitan cities were discussed in the meeting. These included appointing nodal officers, strengthening police and legal mechanisms, increasing manpower for SPUNER, and reviewing hostels for students and other residents from the region. Officials also stressed better coordination among government agencies and monitoring of existing initiatives to ensure timely intervention in cases involving people from the Northeast.
The committee also focused on long-term measures to address discrimination and improve awareness about Northeast India. Discussions included possible amendments to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, implementation of the Bezbaruah Committee recommendations, and greater inclusion of the region’s history and culture in school curriculum.
