New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the fatality, saying the attacker and one victim had died following the incident.
A woman carrying multiple knives stabbed two people in New York’s Times Square on Tuesday before responding police officers deployed a Taser and opened fire, killing the alleged attacker, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
Addressing the media, Mamdani said one of the two victims had died, while the second remained hospitalised in stable condition. The alleged attacker also died after being shot by police.
“I am deeply saddened to report that one of the victims has passed away, as has the alleged perpetrator. The second victim is currently in the hospital in stable condition,” Mamdani said.
“I want to thank the NYPD officers who stepped in and prevented a horrific attack from becoming even worse,” he added.
Police Open Fire After Stabbing
A witness told local outlet PIX11 that the woman was carrying two knives and was tasered by police before she rushed towards officers.
“They shot her twice,” the unnamed witness said.
The New York Police Department described the incident as a “confirmed officer-involved shooting” and said a press briefing would be held later.
“Right now, it’s still an active and ongoing investigation,” an NYPD spokeswoman told AFP.
Police have not yet released the identities of the attacker or victims.
