Tech billionaire Elon Musk has contributed $276 million to organisations supporting right-wing candidates ahead of the US midterm elections, making him the biggest single donor for the November 3 polls, according to a report by The New York Times.

The contributions, all made since July, bring Musk’s total political spending during the current election cycle to $366 million, the report said.

The world’s richest man has directed much of the money towards groups supporting Republican candidates as the party seeks to retain control of Congress.

Republicans Get Bulk Of Musk’s Donations

The largest recipient was the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican-aligned political action committee (PAC), which received $158 million to support the party’s efforts to retain control of the Senate.

Musk also donated $76 million to his own America PAC, according to the report.

Other recipients included the Congressional Leadership Fund, which received $20 million, the Republican Governors Association and the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which received $10 million each, and the Republican Attorneys General Association, which received $2 million.

Although individual campaign donations in the US are capped at $3,300 per person, wealthy donors can contribute much larger sums to political action committees, which support candidates and election campaigns.

Musk’s History Of Political Spending

Musk has previously spent heavily on US elections. In 2024, he contributed around $290 million to help Trump win re-election.

His latest donations come after a public falling-out with Trump in 2025, following Musk’s departure from the White House, where he had led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
