Mumbai’s monsoon fury turned deadlier on Monday as at least 10 people died in rain-related incidents, while a landslide near Lohagad Fort trapped a family and forced the complete shutdown of both the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old highway. IMD’s ‘red warning’, shut schools and a rail landslide compounded the crisis.

From a tree crushing a roadside shop in Kurla to a man drowning after falling into a floodwater-hidden manhole in Saki Naka, the fatalities paint a grim picture of a city battling relentless downpours.

An 11-year-old was killed when a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur, while two youths died after venturing into the off-limits Pandavkada Waterfall in Kharghar. In Mira Road-Bhayandar, a falling coconut tree claimed another life.

Adding to the chaos, a landslide at Patan village near Lohagad Fort has reportedly trapped a family, with rescue operations underway, while both the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway have been shut in both directions after a concrete pillar collapse and flooding on alternate routes through Maval and Tamini Ghat.

The IMD’s 4 AM nowcast has escalated the alert to Red for Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad and Thane, warning of intense rain spells with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph, even as the city already reels from shut schools, cancelled exams and a landslide-hit railway line.
