Justin Gaethje Stuns Ilia Topuria To Capture UFC Lightweight Title At Historic White House Event
Justin Gaethje delivered one of the biggest upsets in UFC history by defeating previously unbeaten Ilia Topuria to become the undisputed UFC lightweight champion at the historic UFC Freedom 250 event held on the South Lawn of the White House. The event marked the first professional sporting spectacle hosted at the iconic venue and was part of celebrations surrounding America’s 250th anniversary.
Heading into the fight, Topuria entered as the favorite and looked in control during the opening rounds. The reigning champion showcased his trademark precision and aggression, edging ahead through the first two rounds. However, Gaethje gradually turned the tide with his trademark toughness, relentless pressure, and powerful striking.
The turning point came in the third round when Gaethje landed a crushing right hand and followed it up with a series of sharp jabs that left Topuria visibly damaged. As the fight progressed, the American continued to pile on pressure, causing swelling and cuts on the champion’s face. Despite undergoing a medical assessment and being cleared to continue, Topuria struggled to recover from the sustained punishment.
Topuria showed tremendous heart and refused to back down, battling through adversity and continuing to exchange with Gaethje. However, by the end of the fourth round, the damage had become too severe. Concerned for their fighter’s safety, Topuria’s corner made the decision to stop the contest before the fifth round could begin, handing Gaethje a dramatic victory.
The victory finally earned Gaethje the undisputed lightweight crown after years of competing among the UFC elite. Speaking after the fight, the American credited his durability, perseverance, and ability to endure difficult moments for helping him secure the biggest win of his career.
