Every year, in the coastal city of Puri, three chariots, pulled by hundreds of devotees, take the idols of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra on a journey across the city. If you’re in the city for the yatra, take a few days out to explore all the incredible experiences Puri has to offer.
Jagannath Temple
No visit to Puri is complete without paying homage at the Jagannath Temple, the spiritual heart of the city. Built in the 12th century, this iconic temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple’s annual Rath Yatra is its most celebrated event, where the deities are taken out in a grand procession on three massive chariots. If it’s too crowded inside the temple, you can appreciate it from outside or from the nearby Raghunandan Library rooftop viewpoint.
Puri Beach
A haven for beach lovers, Puri Beach boasts golden sands and gentle waves lapping the shore. Relax under the warm sun, take a refreshing dip in the sea, or enjoy exhilarating water sports like parasailing and jet-skiing. In the evenings, the beach is the perfect place to catch a mesmerising sunset and catch a meal at one of the many shacks that line the area.
Loknath Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Loknath Temple is another spiritual site that sees increased footfall during festival periods. Located just 2 km from Jagannath Temple, it is believed that Lord Jagannath himself worships Lord Loknath here. What makes this temple unique is the lingam submerged under water, visible only once a year when the sanctum is drained. The temple’s legacy and powerful legends make it worth a visit.
Konark Sun Temple
If you’re headed to Puri, don’t miss embarking on a day trip to the Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This awe-inspiring 13th-century temple, dedicated to the God Surya, is shaped like a giant chariot and is renowned for its intricate carvings and architectural mastery.
