India completely outplayed New Zealand to clinch the T20 World Cup 2026 title at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. It was a sensational performance by the Suryakumar Yadav-led side, as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided the perfect start with half-centuries, while Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets to leave New Zealand completely stunned. Chasing 256, New Zealand were bundled out for just 159 as India registered a comprehensive 96-run victory. With this win, India became the first team in history to win the T20 World Cup title three times. They also became the first team to win the trophy at home and the first side to defend the title, having won the T20 World Cup back in 2024 as well.

Indian cricket team skipper Suryakumar Yadav opened up about the historic victory and also called star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah a ‘national treasure’.

“I think it’ll take a little bit of time (to sink in), but I’m definitely very happy with what has happened today. It has been a long journey. Started post-2024 World Cup when BCCI at that time, Jay (Shah) bhai, at that time Secretary Rohit (Sharma) Bhai, and everyone, they showed faith in me, gave me an opportunity to lead this wonderful side, and then it was a long, long, long cycle coming here again at the Narendra Modi Stadium and doing it. I think it’s a special feeling. I think we knew that we were playing some good cricket throughout the two years, and it was going really well,” Suryakumar Yadav said after the match.

Samson (89 off 46 balls), Abhishek Sharma (52 in 21 balls) and Ishan Kishan (54 in 25 balls) slammed half-centuries to take India to a mammoth total of 255/5. It was the highest team total ever in a T20 World Cup final.
