India pacer Mohammed Shami retires from Tests, says he will keep playing white-ball cricket.

India pacer Mohammed Shami has called time on his Test cricket career. He made the announcement through a video on social media late on Friday night. The 36-year-old pacer hung up his boots in the format after claiming 229 wickets in 64 matches. Shami has been out of the Indian team since the 2025 Champions Trophy final. He missed a major part of the action due to injury. Despite returning to competitive cricket with impressive performances for Bengal, the pacer remained out of favour with the Indian team.
While announcing his Test retirement through a video, Shami revealed that he will continue playing white-ball cricket.
“I am bidding farewell to the white jersey, but never to the memories associated with it. When I wore India’s Test jersey for the first time, I had only one dream: to do something for my country. Since then, every wicket, every struggle, every injury, and every comeback has taught me something,” Shami wrote on Instagram alongside the video.
“Test cricket has not just been a format for me, it has been a deeply special part of my life. Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am announcing my retirement from Test cricket. A heartfelt thank you to every teammate, coach, family member, and the millions of Indians who supported me on this journey and kept their faith in me through both good times and bad.”
Shami’s last appearance in the format came in June 2023. It was during the World Test Championship final against Australia.
The pacer thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India as well as the Cricket Association of Bengal in an emotional message.
“A sincere thank you as well to the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for believing in my talent, giving me opportunities to grow, and playing a vital role in my cricketing journey. Your support and trust will always remain special to me,” Shami wrote further.
