The Indian cricket team’s victory at the Oval will not just go down as one of the greatest victories by the Asian giants in Test cricket history, but also saw them shatter the record books as they sealed a win over England by a narrow margin of just six runs.
After an exciting series which saw both teams play some fine cricket, the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy got the ending it deserved as the fifth Test, like the first four games, went into the final day. Chasing 374, England needed 35 runs at the start of play while India were four wickets away.
Mohammed Siraj completed a five-wicket haul while taking three wickets on Day
5 while Prasidh Krishna took four wickets in the fourth innings.
India Creates History
The win at Oval made India only the third team in history to win a Test match against England in England by less than 10 runs and the first team to achieve the feat in 123 years. The only two previous instances of a team beating the Englishmen away from home by a margin of less than 10 runs happened in 1882 and 1902.
England’s Narrowest Defeats At Home In Test Cricket
Overall, England has had two more defeats by a margin of less than 10 runs in Test cricket, with one of them being a one-run defeat to New Zealand in 2023 at Wellington and a loss by six runs to Australia at Sydney in 1885.
India’s All-Time High
The victory at the Oval marked the first instance of India winning a Test match by less than 10 runs. The Shubman Gill-led side broke a record that stood for 21 years following a win under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership against Australia in 2004 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Away from home, the Asian Giants had never before won a game by fewer than 31 runs.
