New Delhi: India on Saturday agreed with China that the two neighbouring nations should try to resolve the protracted boundary dispute in keeping with the political perspective of the overall bilateral relations and the interests of the peoples.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a bilateral meeting with the Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi. This was the third meeting between the two leaders – after the ones at Kazan in Russia in October 2024 and in Tianjin, China in August 2025 – since New Delhi and Beijing started trying to restore normalcy in relations, which had nosedived to a new low in the wake of the violent face-off at Galwan Valley in June 2020 and the more-than-four-year-long military stand-off in eastern Ladakh.
Modi told Xi on Saturday that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remained “an essential basis for the continued development of bilateral relations”.
“The two leaders expressed commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question proceeding from the political perspective of their overall bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the two peoples,” the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India stated in a press release issued in New Delhi after the meeting between Modi and Xi.
“We should commit to the parallel development and mutual promotion of bilateral relations and border issues, maintaining peace and tranquillity in border areas,” Xi was quoted as telling Modi in a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of China in Beijing. “China and India are partners, not rivals, and opportunities, not threats, for each other’s development.”
