Are you someone who feels a tad bit of jealousy as you walk through those luxurious and comfortable-looking lie-flat beds in business-class on your way to economy? If yes, then you are not alone. However, before you crunch yourself into that tiny economy seat, you should know that there is a better way to travel and that is by scoring a flight upgrade.
It is important to understand that only frequent travelers and airline loyalty members top the upgrade list. Most airlines prioritize status holders within their frequent flier programs for complimentary upgrades to Economy Plus or business class. Despite this, there are a few things that can make you more noticed for an upgrade.
In case you have experienced a flight disruption, the airline may want to woo you with a better deal. This is a perfect time to request both compensation and an upgrade.
Julian Kheel, founder and CEO at Points Path, while speaking to media said, “Wearing a suit or fancy dress isn’t more likely to get you upgraded, though looking like you might be a difficult passenger definitely hurts your case.”
He further explained, “In the last several years, airlines have worked aggressively to sell upgrades rather than give them away, and even passengers with elite status get fewer complimentary upgrades nowadays.”
That does not mean it cannot happen but you should not count on it.
To not lose your chance of an upgrade, make sure you get to the airport early. If you want to be upgraded, get there around 1 hour before boarding. Much earlier, and the gate agents won’t be servicing your flight yet.
Also, if you have a special occasion, just advertise it! Travelling on your birthday or anniversary? Or is it your bachelorette? Bring it to the crew’s attention.
By chance if you have arrived at the gate 1-1.5 hour early, you can also walk up to the gate agents and ask them.
