Grok AI’s Translation Blunder Twists PM Modi’s Reply to Maldives President Muizzu’s R-Day Wish, Sparks Debate

  • January 28, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s Republic Day wishes drew attention due to a mistranslation by Grok AI on the platform X.

Grok AI wrongly translates PM Modi’s post on X, users point out.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply to Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s wish on India’s 77th Republic Day came under users’ attention after many found that Grok, the integrated Artificial Intelligence assistance on microblogging site X, had wrongly translated PM’s post.

President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday expressed his wishes on India’s 77th Republic Day, saying the day strongly signifies the commitment of the people of India to uphold the principles of freedom, democracy, and good governance.

“Warmest greetings and best wishes to President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn, Prime Minister Narendra Modi @narendramodi, the government, and the friendly people of India as they celebrate their 77th Republic Day,” Muizzu said.

“This day strongly signifies the commitment of the people of India to uphold the principles of freedom, democracy, and good governance. The Maldives wishes to continue our work together to strengthen our excellent ties that have immensely benefited the welfare of the people of both countries,” the Maldivian President added.

Acknowledging Muizzu’s message, Prime Minister Modi thanked the Maldivian President, saying the two nations will continue to advance the work for the benefit of citizens.

“Thank you, President Muizzu. On the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, I gratefully accept the warm congratulations and best wishes that you have extended, with respect and esteem. We will continue to advance the work we are doing together for the benefit of the citizens of both nations. I wish all Maldivian citizens a future filled with happy and prosperous days ahead,” said the Grok AI translated PM Modi’s post on X.

However, the same post of PM Modi sent out a completely different message when it was earlier translated by Grok AI.

What Grok AI Had Earlier Translated

PM Modi had originally posted his message in the local language Divehi — that is an Indic language spoken in the Maldives, related to Sinhala.

The earlier translation by Grok AI read, ”Sukuriyya, Raayithun Majlis. India’s 77th Independence Day celebrations were held in the Maldives, and the Maldivian government participated in the event. This Sukuriya government has also been involved in the anti-India campaigns of the people. Even in the two anti-India campaigns, they have been at the forefront of the protests.”

The post was not just wrongly translated but it sent out a completely different message that sounded not too friendly and could have hurt bilateral relations between the two countries.

However, after users pointed out that the English translation of PM Modi’s post in Divehi was giving a totally different message, the platform rectified it.

Many users on X also posted different translated versions of PM Modi’s original post using ChatGPT comparing the stark difference between Grok and other AI assistance platforms.

On Monday, India celebrated the Republic Day with a grand display of its cultural diversity, economic growth and military prowess in a parade that lasted about 90 minutes.
