In August, 13 people died in a similar mining accident in the municipality of Policarpa, also in Nariño

At least 14 people have been killed and seven injured after an illegal gold mine collapsed in south-western Colombia, local authorities say. The accident occurred in the rural Chambero sector of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, in the department of Nariño.
Search and rescue operations have concluded, Nariño Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar said on Monday.
Jorge Tovar Castillo, a regional disaster response official, said a further 12 to 15 miners had been reported missing following the collapse.
Municipal authorities were coordinating the response, but communication had been difficult, he added.
Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé is surrounded by dense rainforest and can be reached only by boat or small aircraft, complicating access to the remote area.
