FORMER American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn has been found guilty of murdering his wife.
Prosecutors said Flynn, 40, killed his wife Ashley while she was asleep on February 16, stressing that he shot her twice in the back of the head before attempting to make the death look like the result of a home invasion.
Flynn consistently denied murdering Ashley, who was a school teacher and volleyball coach.
But on Tuesday, Flynn was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs after jurors returned guilty verdicts on all nine counts – including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence – after just over two hours of deliberation.
The verdict appeared to overwhelm him emotionally, as he cried and repeatedly wiped his pained face.
A sentencing hearing was set for October 5, where he could be condemned to life behind bars without parole.
During closing arguments, Matthew C. Joseph, an assistant prosecutor with the Miami County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Troy, Ohio, argued that the evidence showed Flynn’s version of events was entirely fabricated.
Damning texts messages between Flynn and his ex-mistress, Alleigha Botner, shocked the courtroom.
In a slew of texts, Flynn told Botner that he had stayed awake until 4am thinking about “ways to kill her and not go to jail.”
Botner responded that she did not want Ashley killed.
“I’m not asking that you take her life,” she wrote, according to the evidence, while adding that making the divorce happen would “change everything.”
Flynn answered: “I’ll work on getting rid of her. Until then, I love you.”
According to Flynn’s account to police, he was sleeping in a separate room with the couple’s daughters when he heard a gunshot.
He said he later found Ashley dead.
The texts were presented as evidence of Flynn’s state of mind and his relationship with his wife.
Flynn’s defense team has disputed the prosecution’s case, arguing that investigators zeroed in on him early in the investigation.
They also maintained that his affair with Botner drew disproportionate attention and influenced how authorities viewed the evidence against him.
Flynn appeared on Season 12 of American Idol in 2013. He performed during the televised auditions in Chicago but did not advance to the main competition.
Flynn’s story began to unravel after his wife, Ashley, was found fatally shot inside their Ohio home.
He had called police early that morning, claiming an intruder had entered the house and shot her. Flynn told investigators he was in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard a gunshot.
He also said he later discovered a door leading toward the garage standing open.
But investigators found no evidence that anyone had fled the property. They also determined that damage around the garage-side door did not appear consistent with a typical forced entry, according to CNN.
Inside Flynn’s truck, officers noticed that the center console was open—the same location where Flynn said he kept his handgun.
As investigators continued questioning him, Flynn insisted that there had been no serious problems in his marriage “whatsoever.”
That account became more complicated when authorities uncovered his relationship with Alleigha Botner.
According to testimony, Flynn and Botner had been involved in an affair for approximately 18 months. Their relationship generated an enormous digital trail: jurors were told the pair exchanged more than 100,000 messages.
Those communications would later become a major part of the prosecution’s case.
In one message from September 2025, Flynn described everything he was willing to risk to stay with Botner, including his daughters, his quarter-million-dollar salary, his home, his position at a church, and the possibility of public humiliation.
Botner said she met Flynn at 21 while interning at Christian Life Center in Dayton, where he served as a music pastor.
She later became a worship leader at the church.
Botner, meanwhile, repeatedly pushed Flynn to leave Ashley.
“Until she’s gone, I’m gone,” she wrote in one exchange, according to evidence presented at trial.
