‘Crowd Became Uncontrollable’: Haridwar Mansa Devi Stampede Survivors Share Ordeal

Haridwar’s Mansa Devi temple stampede killed six and got several injured. Uttarakhand CM Dhami expressed sadness and assured rescue efforts.

A stampede broke out at Haridwar’s Mansa Devi temple on Sunday, killing six people and leaving many injured, police said.

Rumour of an electric current where the stairs to the temple begin sent the devotees into a panic, leading to the stampede, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobal told PTI Videos. About 35 people were rushed to hospital and six of them died, he said.

The incident took place around 9.30 am.

One of the injured told ANI, “Just 20-25 steps before the temple premises, the crowd became uncontrollable… I fell down along with 10 to 12 others… I found 3 of my family members, but 2 are still missing…”

Another shared his ordeal and told his hand got fractured. “Suddenly, a huge crowd gathered there and a stampede took place. During this, I fell and my hand got fractured…”

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he was saddened by the incident and asserted that the situation was being monitored.
