Congress’s Kerala CM Cliffhanger To End Today? Party May Name New Cliff House Occupant

A crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is scheduled for 1pm, where the name of the new Chief Minister will be formally proposed and ratified

The focus for this afternoon’s CLP meeting will be on a “unity formula” that satisfies all factions. Whether the party opts for a clear single leader or a structured power-sharing arrangement, the priority is to facilitate a swearing-in ceremony before the weekend. File pic/ANI

The emphatic victory of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 2026 Kerala assembly elections, where it secured a commanding 102 seats, has been momentarily eclipsed by a week-long leadership vacuum. As of Thursday, the stalemate that has gripped the state since the results were declared on May 4 is finally expected to break. With the state currently functioning under a caretaker setup, the Congress “high command” in New Delhi has transitioned from deliberation to decision-making, aiming to resolve the high-stakes tug-of-war between two political titans.

The May 13 Turning Point: Consultations Conclude

Wednesday served as the penultimate chapter in this political drama. Following days of factional manoeuvring, the Congress leadership held a series of exhaustive meetings in the national capital. The primary task was to reconcile the competing claims of AICC General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, outgoing Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan, and veteran leader Ramesh Chennithala.

By Wednesday evening, AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed that the consultation process was officially complete. This announcement came amid mounting pressure from the UDF’s second-largest constituent, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The IUML leadership has been vocal about its frustration, demanding an immediate end to the “prolonged uncertainty” that they fear could dampen the public enthusiasm generated by the 102-seat mandate. Meanwhile, the physical transition of power was underscored by outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who officially vacated the Cliff House residence, having served in a caretaker capacity for over a week.

The May 14 Agenda: Formalising the Verdict

Thursday, May 14, is the designated “D-Day”. The theatre of action shifts from the corridors of New Delhi back to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. A crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is scheduled for 1pm, where the name of the new Chief Minister will be formally proposed and ratified.

AICC observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, who have been overseeing the “secret ballot” and one-on-one feedback sessions with the 63 Congress MLAs, are expected to present the high command’s choice. While the race remains exceptionally tight, the decision involves a complex set of variables. VD Satheesan is widely perceived as the popular choice amongst the public and the youth wing for his aggressive parliamentary performance over the last five years. Conversely, reports suggest that KC Venugopal maintains the backing of a significant majority of the newly elected MLAs, bolstered by his proximity to the party’s central leadership.
