Russell Brand Found Guilty Of Rape And Sexual Assault, Denied Bail
British comedian and actor Russell Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by London’s Southwark Crown Court on Thursday (November 5). The charges relate to allegations dating back more than 20 years. The 51-year-old was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. Following the verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan refused Brand bail and indicated that he would be handed a prison sentence. His sentencing is scheduled for Monday.
During the trial, prosecutors described Brand as a ruthless, calculating and manipulative “sexual predator”. They alleged that he had used his celebrity status to exploit women and expected them to meet his sexual demands, regardless of whether they were willing. Brand denied all the charges. While acknowledging that he had been obsessed with sex as a young man and had led a promiscuous lifestyle, he maintained that he had never forced anyone into sexual activity. He had also described the alleged incidents as consensual.
About Russell Brand’s Career
Born in Grays, Essex, Brand moved to London at the age of 16 to study at the Italia Conti stage school. However, he was expelled a year later and eventually began performing stand-up comedy at smaller venues. His big break came in 2000 when he landed a presenting role at MTV. He subsequently gained popularity through television appearances, including a spin-off show connected to Channel 4’s Big Brother. He also became a familiar voice on British radio, including programmes for the BBC.
However, his career faced a major controversy in 2008 when he and broadcaster Jonathan Ross left a lewd voicemail for actor Andrew Sachs during a radio programme. The message included a claim that Brand had slept with Sachs’ granddaughter. The incident led to Brand’s departure from the BBC.
Brand later made his way into Hollywood, with Hop and Arthur both topping the US box office in 2011. His last on-screen credit, according to IMDb, was in the 2022 film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.
Russell Brand’s Marriage To Katy Perry
In 2010, Brand married American pop star Katy Perry in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, India. During the trial, he described the marriage as having brought him “staggering fame”. However, the couple separated after 14 months.
Perry later spoke about the relationship in a 2013 interview with Vogue, suggesting that Brand had been “very controlling”. She also said she felt responsible for their separation before discovering what she described as the real truth.
Following his Hollywood career, Brand increasingly moved towards political commentary, activism and online content creation. His 2014 bestselling book, Revolution, criticised political and economic systems as well as consumer capitalism. He also interviewed then Labour Party leader Ed Miliband ahead of Britain’s 2015 general election.
In recent years, Brand has focused on building his digital presence, accumulating more than 10 million followers on X and 2.2 million subscribers on his Rumble channel, Stay Free.
