The Centre has formally identified 28 strategic places and geographical features in Ladakh, including key friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) such as Gogra and Hot Spring, on the official Survey of India map.

The move, undertaken by the Government of India in consultation with the Ladakh Union Territory administration, is aimed at standardising official cartography, enabling precise identification of locations and improving public awareness of the sensitive border region.

“Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh, has identified a total of twenty-eight (28) places/features, located in the UT of Ladakh, by standard place and feature names on the official map of Survey of India (SoI),” the government said in a statement.

According to the statement, formally identifying the locations on the Survey of India map of Ladakh will help facilitate their accurate recognition and promote greater public awareness.

Among the locations identified are Gogra and Hot Spring, two strategically significant areas that emerged as friction points during the 2020 India-China military standoff in eastern Ladakh. The areas are also important from the perspective of Indian patrolling along the LAC.

The eastern Ladakh border standoff began on May 5, 2020, following a violent confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops in the Pangong Lake area. The two sides subsequently began a phased disengagement process in 2022.
