Brain Scans Reveal Soft Spot For On-Screen Enemies, TV Study Finds

After Watching a TV Drama, the Brain Tracked Rivalries More Clearly Than Friendships

Watching a TV show may largely feel like mental relaxation, but beneath the surface our minds are still at work. A brain imaging study suggests that when people learn who’s feuding with whom on screen, certain brain regions take special notice. Researchers compared how the brain responded to the faces of eight characters from the legal drama Suits before and after volunteers watched six episodes, and found that neural activity linked to hostile relationships showed up more clearly than activity linked to friendly ones.

Published in Communications Psychology, the study adds a wrinkle to research on how the brain builds a “social map,” an internal picture of how people in a group relate to each other. Much of that research has focused on the warmer side of social life: friendship, cooperation, trust. This study points to something else.

Researchers frame the idea with a line from a politician character played by Al Pacino in the 1996 film City Hall: “A man’s stature is determined by his enemies, not his friends.” It’s a dramatic way of putting it, and the study itself is narrower than that quote implies: 21 college students watched a fictional drama in a lab setting. Whether the same pattern applies to real coworkers, friends, or family members remains an open question.

College Students Watched Six Episodes of ‘Suits’ for Science

Researchers recruited 21 college students, 12 men and 9 women between 19 and 23, none of whom had seen Suits before. Each had their brain scanned by MRI while looking at photos of the show’s eight main characters, before watching a single episode. Then they went home and watched the first six episodes, about five hours of television spread across several days, and returned roughly two weeks later for a second brain scan while looking at the same faces.

To confirm people had actually paid attention, researchers asked comprehension questions after each episode; participants averaged 90 percent accuracy. After the second scan, participants rated all 28 possible pairings of the eight characters on two scales: how strong the relationship seemed, and whether it felt friendly or hostile. The strongest bonds tended to sit at the extremes, either clearly friendly or clearly hostile, while weaker connections between characters who barely interacted clustered closer to neutral.

Three Brain Regions Lit Up for On-Screen Rivalries

Researchers then compared how similar or different the brain’s response was to each pair of characters, and tested whether those differences lined up with how participants rated the pairs as hostile or friendly, while accounting for how similar the characters’ faces looked to each other.

Three brain regions showed activity patterns tied specifically to antagonistic relationships: the left anterior supramarginal gyrus, an area linked to reading other people’s intentions; the left superior parietal gyrus; and the right medial prefrontal cortex, a region tied to thinking about other people and making social judgments. Researchers found clear neural patterns associated with antagonistic relationships, while comparable effects for friendly relationships weren’t strong enough to count as real findings by the study’s own standards. That gap doesn’t prove friendships go unrepresented in the brain; it may simply reflect the limits of a small study’s statistical power.

Scans also picked up something in the precuneus, a region tied to autobiographical memory. Overall activity there increased after the drama, though it didn’t track the specific web of relationships the way the other two regions did. Researchers see this as a possible division of labor: one set of regions may store memories about individual people, while regions toward the front and sides handle a more abstract map of who opposes whom. Watching the drama also made the brain’s responses to different characters grow more distinct from each other overall, a broader sign that the show sharpened how individually the brain represented each character.
