Big Move to Boost Public Confidence: Supreme Court Publishes Judges’ Asset Details in Transparency Push

In response to the “cash at home” scandal involving Justice Yashwant Varma, 21 of the 33 Supreme Court judges have disclosed their asset details online, with the remaining judges’ information set to follow.

A decision in this regard was taken as per a resolution passed on April 1, 2025 following justice Yashwant Varma “Cash At Home” scandal.

Aimed at boosting transparency and public confidence in the judiciary in the wake of Justice Yashwant Varma’s “cash at home” episode, 21 out of the 33 sitting judges of the Supreme Court have posted their asset details on the court’s website.
An SC statement late last night said that the asset details of the remaining 12 judges will also be uploaded soon, “as and when the current statement of assets is received.”
Until now, the website only stated that judges had declared their assets; details were not available. This has been done following a resolution passed on April 1, 2025.

“The Full Court of the Supreme Court of India has, on 1st April, 2025, decided that the statement of assets of the Judges of this Court shall be placed in the public domain by uploading the same on the website of this Court. Statements of assets of Judges already received are being uploaded. Statements of assets of other Judges will be uploaded as and when the current statement of assets is received,” said the press release.

The publication of assets on the website was not mandatory earlier but was discretionary, depending on whether an individual judge wanted to do so.
It was in 2009 that a full court of the Supreme Court of India first took the significant decision—one which came about after great pressure from the public and from within the judiciary.
