Fourteen days after a speeding SUV mowed down a 23-year-old biker in Dwarka, another tragic case of reckless driving has surfaced in West Delhi, where a minor schoolgirl lost her life after an e-rickshaw was hit by a speeding car in Janakpuri.
The accident occurred around 7.40 am on February 17 near the Janakpuri Fire Station. The six year-old victim Preshelle Prince was travelling to school with her maternal grandmother, Mercy Xavier (57), when a speeding Santro rammed into their e-rickshaw from behind, causing it to overturn. Both were thrown onto the road and sustained serious injuries.
They were initially rushed to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri and later shifted to a private hospital in Dwarka for advanced treatment. The child succumbed to her injuries during treatment, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sharad Bhaskar said, “A case has been registered at the Janakpuri police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rash and negligent driving causing death. The offending vehicle has been seized and the accused, identified as Sanjeev, a resident of Majra Dabas, has been taken into custody. Further investigation is underway.”
Recounting the harrowing moments after the crash, the grandmother alleged that bystanders failed to help.
“I begged a car driver, who was standing there watching us, to help and take the child to the hospital. Instead of helping, he ran away. I don’t remember if it was the same car which hit us,” she alleged recalling the horror that unfolded in front of her eyes.
The child’s mother, who works at a hospital, said she received a distress call from her mother informing her of the accident.
